Root rot, which is caused by overwatering, is the most common problem with Snake Plants, especially during the winter months. The roots then die back due to a lack of oxygen or a soil fungus overgrowth. Soggy soils promote the growth and reproduction of Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium fungi, which attack plants by spreading into the roots. As healthy roots die, they turn dark and mushy, unable to absorb the nutrients required for growth.
Root rot is difficult to detect since it develops beneath the soil surface and out of sight. Root rot can kill an entire plant in 10 days if the conditions are ideal, such as in pots without drainage holes.
While snake plants will struggle to live in pots without drainage holes, there are a few creative solutions to this problem that you might not consider. To learn how to grow plants in pots without holes, read my post.
Although it is necessary to pot your snake plant in a well-draining pot, you also want your plant to look good and add to the attractiveness of your home. You may have some ornamental pots with adequate drainage in which to plant your snake plant, but I prefer to place it on a drip tray or within a more elegant planter. Here are some of my favorite indoor planter designs.
Symptoms
The rot is first visible on the roots, causing them to turn dark and mushy, which are classic indicators of rot. Root rot causes leaves to turn yellow, wilt, or droop, and eventually become mushy. Once symptoms appear in the leaves, the condition may be beyond repair, putting the entire plant in jeopardy.
Treatment
If you catch the problem early enough, you can repot the plant. Remove as much diseased soil as possible before replacing it with new, clean potting soil. To assist avoid reinfection, apply a root treatment with helpful mycorrhizal species or sprinkle the healthy roots with sulfur powder. Sulfur acidifies the soil, making some nutrients less available and limiting the food source for pathogens that cause root rot. If the root rot has progressed far enough, dissect the plant and keep just the healthy parts. Take cuttings from healthy foliage and root them to propagate a new plant if the entire base is compromised.
Prevention
When the top 2-4″ of the soil has completely dried up, water the plants. During the cooler, winter months, when the plant is dormant, this could mean just watering it every 1-2 months.
Snake plants are perfect for the less-than-careful gardener. For weeks at a time, you can go without watering them. Your snake plant will easily endure 3 weeks or more without water, even in hot, arid conditions, so you won’t have to bother about all the methods to water houseplants while on vacation.
Can a snake plant recover from root rot?
If you treat and save a snake plant early enough, it can recover from overwatering. Plants that are kept in damp soil for an extended period of time can develop severe root rot, a fungal disease that can quickly destroy the plant. You can begin rescuing the plant by ceasing to water it and relocating it to a sunny location.
How do you fix root rot in snake plants?
Remove your plant from the pot if it displays signs of root rot and start over with a new soilless mixture. Remove any discolored, mushy roots or leaves before repotting healthy rhizomes in the new mix. If the rhizomes cannot be salvaged, they should be discarded. Save a few healthy leaves for propagation of new snake plants.
What color are healthy snake plant roots?
Southern blight is a snake plant disease that causes mushy leaves. Sclerotium rolfsii is a fungus that causes this disease.
The fungus can enter the snake plant’s stems, where it consumes the stuff inside.
Before the plant dies, the leaves of your snake plant will become brown and possibly white, and they will feel mushy and soft. This happens when the fungus infects the tissue of your snake plant.
If you don’t take precautionary actions before determining that southern blight is the cause of your snake plant’s squishy leaves, your plant will die within a week.
Measure the Plant’s Height
When you have a baby, you keep an eye on their size to make sure they’re developing normally. Similarly, keeping note of your snake plant’s height over time will help you determine how healthy it is.
A fully mature snake plant leaf can be up to three inches broad and six to eight feet tall when cultivated in a container. You may observe two to four new leaves and three to six inches of fresh height development per season.
If your snake plant isn’t growing at all or isn’t growing as fast as you’d want, you should investigate why.
Many reasons, many of which I’ve already mentioned, can prevent your snake plant from developing as it should.
A snake plant that has been submerged in water or that has been overwatered is unable to flourish. Plant diseases will obstruct growth as well.
A lack of sunlight is also a concern. The snake plant is shade-tolerant, and it can even survive in complete darkness if that’s all you have.
It’s vital to remember that plants growing in low light will not develop as quickly or as robustly as those growing in more perfect lighting circumstances.
Review the Leaf Uprightness
The snake plant is known for its long, sword-like leaves, which have earned it the moniker “mother-in-tongue.” law’s What if the leaves don’t stand straight up as they’re intended to?
Don’t get me wrong: your snake plant’s leaves don’t have to be exactly straight. A few people can lean or even tilt their heads.
When the bulk of the leaves are drooping, stretching, or bending, there is a concern.
What could be causing the snake plant’s leaves to sag? Returning to sunshine, a lack of it can cause your snake plant to become drooping and melancholy.
Your snake plant’s leaves will droop if you overwater it. Because the plant’s roots are so wet, everything immediately becomes floppy and droopy.
Even if you have proper watering habits, if your snake plant doesn’t have enough drainage, its leaves will be anything but upright.
Your snake plant houseplant’s container should ideally have numerous drainage holes, each of which should be large enough to prevent water from becoming trapped in the pot’s bottom.
Water will be trapped in compacted soil. Replace the plant’s soil every few years to avoid this.
The last reason your snake plant’s leaves may be drooping is because of a lack of humidity.
The snake plant does not require high levels of humidity. It prefers a relative humidity of roughly 40%, which is right in the middle of the range for a home or workplace.
Your snake plant’s leaves can bend to the point where they touch the floor if the humidity is very low.
Do the Fingertip Test
When it comes to determining whether or not your snake plant is healthy, the fingertip test will be one of your finest indicators. All you have to do is stick your finger into the soil around your plant and feel around.
What do you have a strong desire for? The majority of the time, it’s moisture. A healthy snake plant has semi-moist soil that is slightly drier than normal but not fully dry.
You should water your snake plant once the earth has totally dried out, but not before that.
Feeling about in the dirt will also allow you to determine how compacted the snake plant’s soil has become, at least to some extent. How is water meant to get to the roots if you can hardly get your fingers into the soil?
It can’t, which implies it’s becoming stuck in the pockets of the dirt. Wet water is bad for the snake plant, so make sure to replace any standing or moist soil as soon as possible.
Root rot can be considerably reduced by replacing any mushy soil in your snake plant’s pot.

Inspect the Root Ball
When the time comes to remove your snake plant from its present pot, inspect the root ball thoroughly.
The root ball is your plant’s heart and soul, yet it’s something most indoor gardeners don’t get to see very often. What should your snake plant’s root system look like when you examine it?
The roots of a healthy snake plant should be white and solid. If your plant’s roots are brown or black and mushy, it’s suffering from root rot. The decaying roots will have an unpleasant odor as well.
As promised, I’ll speak briefly on root rot. Root rot is a plant-killing disease caused by the presence of more water than oxygen in the roots. Overwatering is the most common cause of root rot, although compacted soil can exacerbate the problem.
The roots will die first, followed by signs such as mushiness and leaf discoloration on your plant. The sickness had already advanced quite far by that stage.
Trim away the dead roots, repot your plant in drier settings, and restrict your watering habits going forward to prevent your plant from root rot.
Can a plant survive root rot?
Many cases of root rot are caused by members of the Phytophthora genus of water molds, with P. cinnamomi being the most aggressive. Other plants are contaminated by spores from root rot-causing pathogens, but the rot cannot take hold unless there is enough moisture. Spores are not only carried by insects and other arthropods in the air, but also by insects and other arthropods in the soil.
A plant with root rot is unlikely to survive, although it can often be propagated such that it is not completely lost. Root-rotted plants should be removed and destroyed.
Do snake plants have deep roots?
The long blade-shaped leaves of Sansevieria are well-known. Its green is generally variegated, and when it’s in good shape, it stands straight in the air. Because they resemble GIANT blades of grass, they remind me of Honey I Shrunk the Kids!

The roots are extremely shallow, especially considering the plant’s potential height. If you want, you can plant them in a shallower container, but the extra soil in a regular-sized container will help counterbalance the long leaves and keep it from toppling over.
Can you reverse root rot?
Keep in mind that due to root rot, the plant is likely already stressed and fragile. Furthermore, it’s really your only option: root rot is irreversible and spreads quickly, so allowing it to continue to decompose will eventually kill the entire plant.
What does a healthy snake plant root look like?
Check the roots carefully after removing the plant for examination. The snake plant’s healthy roots are light yellow or white in color and firm to the touch. They become limp and change color as the condition progresses. Root rot causes the roots to turn brown or black. They’ll feel a little squishy if you touch them.
The virus converts the roots into mush as the root rot develops to its worst stages. As the roots die, the healthy areas of the root become darker and mushy. When you pull on severely injured roots, they may literally fall off the plant.
Why are my snake plant cuttings rotting?
Snake plant cuttings that develop mushy from the bottom up and eventually become brown or black should be avoided. This indicates that the cutting has rotted. This is something you don’t want to happen.
If this happens to cuttings in water, it’s most likely because the cut wasn’t entirely dry before being immersed.
Do your snake plant cuttings seem to be getting a little soggy? It’s possible that you can still save it. Remove it from the water as soon as possible and cut off the decaying area. You can start afresh and try again if there is still a substantial amount of leaf left!
When cuttings that have been planted directly in soil begin to decay, it is mainly due to overwatering.
This can happen if you water the cuttings too frequently, or if they’re in a pot that’s too big or doesn’t have drainage holes on the bottom.

How do you revive a wilted snake plant?
Snake plant is a succulent, which means its thick, rubbery leaves hold a lot of moisture. Succulents, like other houseplants, require less watering, and the snake plant is no different, surviving in the hot, dry tropics of West Africa.
This means they’re easy to overwater, and if they get too much moisture, they’ll have root rot.
Allow your snake plant’s soil to completely dry up before attempting to restore it to its former splendor. Make sure the dirt isn’t only dry on the surface by poking your finger deep into it.
Allow the plant to dry completely between waterings from then on, with at least the top three inches of soil totally dry.
Water solely with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide for three months to eradicate any potential root fungus. You may need to repot the plant in severe cases of root rot (see below advice), removing any mushy or dead roots.
Snake plants usually only need to be watered once every two to four weeks, with plants that receive more light or heat needing to be watered more frequently. They can be watered even less in the winter, just needing water when the leaves appear wilted.

Why is my snake plant mushy?
Overwatering is the leading cause of mushy Snake Plant leaves in 99 percent of cases. Sansevierias don’t require a lot of water, so even if you’re careful, their soil can rapidly become saturated. The roots will decay, and the leaves will become soft and mushy as a result.
If you notice mushy leaves on your Snake Plant, the first thing you should do is examine the quantity of moisture in the soil and the root system’s health. If the soil is extremely damp, remove it from the plant’s roots and completely replenish the potting mix. Trim away the dead and mushy areas of your Snake Plant’s root system so that it can begin to heal. Using a moisture meter is really helpful in determining this.
