How To Repot Snake Plant With Root Rot?

How do I save a potted plant with root rot?

1. Allow time for the soil to dry out.

Allow the soil to air out if you’ve just seen any standing water or leaf change and aren’t sure if it’s yet root rot. Allow the soil of the plant to dry out for 3-5 days. This approach can sometimes help plants that haven’t yet been damaged. Allowing the soil to dry is beneficial because plant roots require air in order to operate properly. If your plant’s roots are seriously rotting, however, go to the instructions below right once because it’s probably too late to dry out the soil.

2. Take out all of the browning leaves.

The first step is to try to get rid of any dead leaves. Make sure to keep them as far away from the plant’s base as possible.

3. Get rid of the old soil.

After that, you’ll need to repot. To do so, you’ll need to dig the plant out of its existing soil. Remove as much soil as possible from the plant after removing it from the pot. When brushing off damp or clumpy soil, try not to upset the root structure too much.

4. Remove any dead or rotting roots.

While the plant is out of the pot, clip away any rotten roots with a sharp knife. Remove any dead roots and save the healthy ones to keep as much as possible intact.

5. Replace the soil in the pot.

How do I fix my sagging snake plant?

If your watering schedule appears to be in order, it’s possible that the soil is just storing too much water and needs to be drained.

Repot your plant in cactus or succulent potting mix to fix this. This is a fantastic Snake plant potting mix that I’ve used several times with wonderful results. Alternatively, mix half perlite and a little compost with standard potting soil for added fertility.

Remove as much of the old soil as possible while repotting, and use a large enough pot (see below). When you water, water should immediately come out of the bottom drainage holes, indicating that the soil isn’t effectively drained.

If you pour a cup of water into the soil and it absorbs a lot of water, it’s usually a sign that you need improved drainage.

Should I water snake plant after repotting?

The snake plant should be placed in the new pot at the same depth as before, with the top of the root ball 1 to 2 inches below the container rim. Remove or add dirt beneath the root ball until it is at the right depth after placing the plant in the prepared pot. Once the plant is properly positioned in the pot, put more soil around the roots. After repotting, water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots and keep the potting media equally moist.

Although it is necessary to pot your snake plant in a well-draining pot, you also want your plant to look good and add to the attractiveness of your home. You may have some ornamental pots with adequate drainage in which to plant your snake plant, but I prefer to place it on a drip tray or within a more elegant planter. To assist avoid reinfection, apply a root treatment with helpful mycorrhizal species or sprinkle the healthy roots with sulfur powder. If the root rot has progressed far enough, dissect the plant and keep just the healthy parts. Take cuttings from healthy foliage and root them to propagate a new plant if the entire base is compromised.

Prevention

When the top 2-4″ of the soil has completely dried up, water the plants. During the cooler, winter months, when the plant is dormant, this could mean just watering it every 1-2 months.

Snake plants are perfect for the less-than-careful gardener. For weeks at a time, you can go without watering them. Your snake plant will easily endure 3 weeks or more without water, even in hot, arid conditions, so you won’t have to bother about all the methods to water houseplants while on vacation.

When should I repot my baby snake plant?

It’s actually that simple to repot a snake plant! What’s more, it only needs to be done every two to three years. You’ll be happy, your snake plant will be happy, and you might even receive additional plants!

Why are my snake plant cuttings rotting?

Can a plant survive root rot?

Many cases of root rot are caused by members of the Phytophthora genus of water molds, with P. cinnamomi being the most aggressive. Other plants are contaminated by spores from root rot-causing pathogens, but the rot cannot take hold unless there is enough moisture.
