The most difficult task for serious sansevieria collectors, like Lewis, is deciphering the scientific nomenclature. Sidling along the narrow aisles of her greenhouse, she explains that plants previously classified as S. singularis are now S. fischeri, while those previously known as S. deserti are now S. pearsonii, according to a recent authorized analysis of the genus. Even professionals, she claims, are perplexed by the “messed up” terminology, a tangle of duplication and questionable data that makes shopping for a specific species more difficult for the typical gardener.

The chameleon-like behavior of sansevierias adds to the confusion. Some species’ leaves change dramatically in size, shape, and color as they age. Some sansevieria species produce leaves with unusual patterns. Even veteran lovers of the plant are perplexed by the quantity of “new” sansevierias on the market.

“It seems like every time a leaf deviates, it gets a new name,” Lewis adds, noting that a single plant can have up to 12 leaves, each with its own distinct appearance.

Another twist: before their identities can be proven, some species and cultivars must blossom.

Most people are shocked to hear that sansevierias bloom, despite the fact that they need good indirect light, regular watering, and diluted feedings throughout the summer.
