In collaboration with a landscaping trade association, NASA conducted a research on how plants can help with indoor air pollution. However, the study did not conclude if plants could produce enough oxygen to keep people alive in an enclosed environment. Air-cleaning plants have been deemed as unfeasible in other studies.
The study was released in 1989 and covered two years of data. It was backed by the Associated Landscape Contractors of America and a section of NASA’s Office of Commercial Programs. The outcomes of the study were subsequently utilised by the landscaping firm to promote the usage of plants indoors.
The researchers studied a dozen plants to see how they affected the presence of pollutants like benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde. Sansevieria laurentii, often known as a snake plant or mother-in-tongue, law’s was one of such plants.
Toxic chemicals were used to contaminate the plants, which were then placed in sealed Plexiglas containers. Two of the rooms were 30-by-30-by-30-inch cubes, while the other two were twice as big. After the poisons were introduced, air samples were taken at regular intervals.

They recommended that any effort to reduce indoor air pollution using plants include fans that flow air through activated carbon filters.
The Facebook assertion, on the other hand, is about what would happen if a human was trapped in a room with no ventilation. Researchers noted that the NASA study did not evaluate how the addition of humans to the chamber would affect the results. “NASA studies at Stennis Space Center, private studies by Biosphere 2 in Arizona, and USSR studies in Siberia are beginning to present a clearer picture of what man might expect to experience while sealed inside facilities with plants and soil as his major means of life support,” they said.
