  • Fertilizer: These slow-growing plants don’t require much in the way of fertilizer. Snake plants should be fed any houseplant food twice a year, once in the spring and once in the summer. These plants are low-maintenance.
  • Snake plants do well in hot, dry environments. For the summer, consider placing potted ones in bright shade outside. They will flourish in the landscape where there is no frost or snow. Just make sure these plants aren’t invasive in your area by checking with local nurseries.
  • Snake plants are slow-growing and rarely require repotting (they actually grow better when pot-bound). Low-light plants may need to be repotted every 5 to 10 years. Expect to transfer snake plants in stronger light every 3 to 5 years.

This is the most difficult aspect! Sansevieria takes a long time to root. Sansevieria rooting in water, on the other hand, is faster than rooted in soil. Significantly faster!

If you opt to cut each leaf into many parts, there is one thing to keep in mind.

The leaf segments must remain in the same orientation as when they were growing on the plant.

As you can see in the photo above, I chopped one leaf in half on the right side.

The leaf segments must not be turned upside-down or they will not root.

Fill a container or jar halfway with water and place the whole leaves, or leaf segments, in it.

A glass that is thinner at the bottom can hold the leaf in place so that the bottom of each leaf does not touch the glass’s bottom.

You can also use little orchid clips or hair clips to bind the leaves to the propagation vessel while preventing them from lying on the glass at the bottom.

This will give the roots room to expand.

The roots will grow anyhow, but this is a step in the right direction.

THE SECRET TO SUCCESS

Make sure to change the water on a regular basis. I’d start by doing it once or twice a week. If the water becomes hazy or unclean, you should change it more frequently.

Even if you follow these steps, you may still encounter problems, therefore here is the real secret to Sansevieria water propagation success that no one is talking about!

This is extremely vital!

Your leaf cuttings may get slimy, especially in the earliest stages of the water propagation process.

Take them out and feel the submerged sections of the leaves.

If the leaves are slimy, rinse them in the sink with warm or lukewarm water and touch them lightly with your finger to remove the slime.

After you’ve cleaned all of your cuttings, clean the container in which they’re stored with soapy water.

Rinse thoroughly, re-insert the cuttings, and top off with fresh water.

Placing the rooted cuttings near a window is a good idea.

Bright indirect light or even a ray of sunlight would suffice.

However, I would not recommend putting the cuttings in direct sunlight or in the dark.

Last but not least, if you have a water softening system in your home, do not use this water for your plants!

Sodium, which is poisonous to plants, is usually added to the water in these systems.

How Long Will The Roots Take to Grow?

It will be MUCH faster if you employ the water propagation approach, as I previously stated!

The quickest I’ve heard is 15 days from everyone I’ve communicated with on Instagram.

This is extremely rare and happens very quickly.

These are not normal outcomes.

It can take a long time in some cases.

(Root formation in sansevieria soil propagation can take several months, and pup formation can take even longer.)

You’ll have to wait a little longer for the puppies to form after the roots have formed.

The roots will form first, followed by the development of completely formed small pups.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if your plant is variegated, the puppies that emerge from leaf cuttings will NOT be variegated!

Aren’t they lovely yellow edges?

The developing pups will not be variegated if I take leaf cuttings from this snake plant and root them.

If you want variegated progeny, you’ll need to split the plant at the roots if it has numerous crowns, and then pot up the different portions.

Alright. You have two options: do it the easy way or do it the hard way. The simple solution is to simply repot the clipping as you would any other plant. Cover your pot halfway with dirt, then place your cutting below the rim of the pot and gently fill the rest of the way with soil. Instead of being caught in a single damp clump, allow the roots to fan out. Because the roots of your cutting are accustomed to being in water, you’ll need to water it thoroughly. Although simple, this method carries a higher danger of the plant failing to adapt if it is immediately thrown into a new medium.

If you want to take it slow and steady, your plant may be more successful. This process is gradually replacing water with dirt. Pour out half of the water and refill it with dampened soil (dampened so it doesn’t float) when your plant’s roots are ready. Replace a little more each day until your cutting is mostly submerged in soil, at which point you can pot it into whichever container you want.
