This Sedum Tile Color Splash is the simplest of all the Sedum Tile Color Splashes. Each “tile” is around 10″ × 20″ and includes a variety of plants picked for their complementary colors and shapes. We recommend using 12 tiles planted 12″ apart for a 50 sq ft bed, and plants will fill in neatly within a couple of years. Gardening, rooftops, and pots have never looked so good.
This huge genus of fleshy-leaved plants can be found in the Northern Hemisphere’s mountains (a few of the 400 species live in the drier parts of South America). Sedum thrives in well-drained soil with a pH close to neutral (7.0) with only a small amount of nutrients. We don’t sell any of them since they spread quickly and can become pests. For the rock garden, there are a plethora of unique and colorful forms. In the perennial border, a few can be used.
Do sedum pavers spread?
Many gardeners recognize upright sedum species, such as Sedum ‘Autumn Joy,’ as good plants for color in late summer and early autumn’s hot, dry days. Several low-growing sedum types, on the other hand, operate well as ground cover plants in hot, arid climates where other plants struggle to survive.
The Sedum genus contains 400500 species known as sedums, or stonecrops, many of which have been widely embraced as garden plants. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family, which is noted for plants with mushy, succulent leaves. Stonecrop gets its name from the fact that these plants not only withstand but thrive in dry, rocky soil. Sedums can grow to be 2 inches tall or 3 feet tall. Some species can withstand temperatures as low as USDA hardiness zone 3, while others are best suited to warmer regions. Sedums come in both annual and perennial varieties, but they’re always fleshy succulents. Sedums store moisture in their leaves, which is why they thrive in arid environments. Despite the fact that all sedums flower, they’re most commonly planted for their foliage, which comes in unique colors of green not found in other plants.
All sedums are incredibly easy to grow and propagate, and the only way to kill them is to overwater them or plant them in excessively moist soil. A single branch or even a leaf stuck in the ground will swiftly root and grow into a new plant in upright kinds. Low-growing sedums spread quickly but aren’t invasive, and their shallow root systems make them easy to remove, making them great ground cover plants.

Are succulents and sedums the same?
Understanding the differences between sedum, succulents, and cactus will be easier if you know these classifications. The term succulent refers to a plant’s trait rather than a specific classification. Succulents have swollen and fleshy sections of their leaves, roots, and stems, which help them retain water in arid regions or soil conditions. Plants having succulent characteristics and a typical plant stem may exist within the same genus. Succulent features are found in many plants, allowing them to adapt to arid circumstances. Succulents are plants that originated in dry climates and have drought-resistant characteristics.
About Sedum
Sedum, often known as “stonecrop,” comes in a wide variety of types and species, making it suited for use in practically any garden design. They’re hardy, easy to care for, and pollinators adore them!
Based on the growth characteristics of the plants, we split sedum into two categories: low-growing sedum and upright sedum.
- Sedum is a low-growing plant that spreads along the ground and grows to only a few inches (or less) in height. They’re ideal as a ground cover along walks, in rock gardens, or cascading down a stone wall because of this.
- Sedum that grows upright forms tall, upright clumps with a dense mass of tiny reddish-pink flowers. They’re ideal for border gardens or pollinator gardens because of their height and gorgeous blossoms. Although upright sedum was reclassified to a different genus, Hylotelephium, a few years ago, it is still referred to as a “sedum.”
What does sedum look like?
Border sedums are appealing in their own right from spring onwards, thanks to their lush green-grey foliage (purple on some species). True sedum, also known as stonecrops, are little succulents with fleshy leaves that spread out like a mat. They are drought resilient due to their origins in dry, rocky areas.
Will sedum take over grass?
Sedums are drought-tolerant succulent plants that spread like weeds and require little care. The only disadvantage to cultivating sedum lawns is that they cannot withstand significant foot activity. The leaves and stems are delicate and quickly break off, but it makes a lovely textured green groundcover in rarely used places.
Sedum is a fast-growing, low-maintenance plant with low pest and disease problems and excellent drought tolerance. Sedum lawns appear to be a great substitute for traditional nitrogen-sucking, high-maintenance turf grass in theory. Low-growing sedum cultivars work well as groundcover, but they have an unappealing appearance in high-traffic locations. Because the stems are easily broken, your sedum lawn alternative may resemble a battleground, with shattered plants and stems and leaves strewn around.
Birds and rodents may wreak havoc on a sedum lawn as well. Plants in desert environments are unable to endure the intense sun and require on a shady spot to thrive. Sedum, on the other hand, is a tough plant that grows in poor soil, strong light, and little water.
Sedum Care
Sedum plants, also known as Stonecrop, grow best in full sun with little to no water and, most importantly, well-drained soil. For the flower bed and border, there are larger types that grow to be over two feet tall and wide. There are certain old standbys in the cottage garden, such as “It’s Autumn Joy.” Ground cover types in vibrant greens, grays, and reds that may spread swiftly and flower in early summer, such as “Angelina Jolie”. And everything in the middle! They thrive in practically any garden and make excellent container plants. Sedum plants feature succulent leaves that range in size from small needles to larger and fleshier leaves, and are available in a variety of colors and patterns, including gray, green, purple, blue, and even variegated! Butterflies and bees are attracted to them. And, best of all, they are perennials, meaning they will return year after year.
- Always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always, always If you’re going to plant them in containers, add some shredded bark or sand to the soil mix to make it more porous. If your garden soil is heavy, fix it or plant them in raised beds and containers.
- Choose containers that complement the look and feel of the plants. To fit the contemporary vibe these plants give off, think concrete, stone, or simple round bowls if you want to go for a succulent garden aesthetic. But don’t let that stop you from utilizing them in any style of garden; it’s a terrific way to freshen things up!
- Although they can survive without water for long periods of time, I find that if they are in well-drained soil, they look best when watered on a regular basis and let to slightly dry out in between.
- They don’t require a lot of fertilizer or a lot of soil. In fact, if you fertilize your plants too much, they will become floppy, with a lot of stem but few leaves and blooms.
- They can tolerate a little midday shadow, but the taller kinds will flip over if they don’t get enough sun.
- Pinch off the tops of the main stems of taller kinds in the spring, when the plant is around six inches tall. This will drive the plant to grow more compactly, which will solve the flopping over issue I stated earlier.
Once you’ve mastered sedum maintenance, experiment with different hen and chick breeds to grow alongside them. They require the same amount of water and fertilizer as sedums and make excellent companion plants. Can sedum survive winter?
Sedums are tough succulent plants that can withstand harsh winters. It’s frequently preferable to forget about them over the winter than to over-care for them and cause damage.
What is sedum used for?
Usually found in stony soil or on rock outcrops in dry or semiarid (temperate) environments. Some species can be found in tropical highlands and at very high elevations or latitudes (Walters 2006).
Sedum is the largest genus in the Crassulaceae family, with over 400 species, and is the most common Crassulaceae genus in temperate North America. Sedum plants range in size from herbs to shrubs. Sedum is known for its succulent leaves and cymose flowers. Fruit is usually a cluster of follicles; capsules are uncommon (Walters 2006).
In China and Korea, Sedum sarmentosum has long been utilized in folk medicine to treat chronic inflammatory disorders, such as chronic viral hepatitis (Moon 2009).
A variety of Sedum species are prized for their taste in salads and soups, in addition to their medical applications.
The leaves and petals of Sedum sarmentosum are used in “namul,” a famous vegetable dish in East Asia.
Sedum reflexum was used by Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist and explorer in the early 1800s, in one of his favorite soups (Faccida 1998).
The Dutch utilized this species in tossed green salads because of its slightly astringent sour flavor.
North Americans in the far west chop young Sedum rhodanthum shoots to add to salads.
Finally, Sedum species have long been popular as houseplants and yard ornamentals.
The most common and well-known application of Sedum is for the treatment of pain and inflammation.
The goal of current study is to figure out how it works as an anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive agent. Alkaloids, tannins, and cyanogenic chemicals are found in Sedum species, however it is assumed that its flavonoid collection gives its anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive qualities (De Melo 2005). There were no randomized controlled trials found. Sedum sarmentosum functions as an ACE inhibitor in vitro and inhibits collagen cartilage tissue loss in mouse models, according to studies (Oh 2004, Kim 2005). Suppression of nitric oxide and prostaglandin synthesis, inhibition of reactive oxygen species generation, and anti-angiogenic action are all proposed methods (Jung 2008 & De Melo 2005).
Sedum alfredii, a native of south China, has a hyperaccumulating ecotype capable of sequestering and storing high quantities of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in its shoots.
For phytoremediation initiatives, the ability to absorb and withstand harmful metal concentrations from the soil is promising.
The mechanism by which Sedum alfredii hyperaccumulates is being investigated in order to see if the hyperaccumulation features can be transferred to crop species for biofortification (Tian 2009).
Between 1998 and 2007, national medical publications published 41 case reports of hepatic veno-occlusive disease caused by Sedum aizoon, a sedum species that is not used medicinally (Wu 2008).

Does sedum spread quickly?
A creeping sedum might be the plant for you if you’re seeking for a lovely plant that thrives in almost complete neglect. Sedums strut their stuff in places where few other plants would dare. They thrive in crevices in a garden wall or pathway, on roofs or the tops of gently sloped birdhouses, and even under big trees where their massive roots capture the majority of the soil’s moisture. They work well in rock gardens, borders, and containers as well.
Many gardeners have begun to look more closely at species of the genus Sedum as seasonal and long-term droughts become more common across the United States. Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is well-known for its late russet blooms, but its ground-hugging relatives are gaining popularity as well.
Stonecrops, sometimes known as creeping sedums, provide a constant source of interest in my garden. They’re some of the most adaptable, drought-tolerant, and simple-to-grow perennials I’ve ever grown in my decades as a gardener. Sedums really reduce the amount of work a gardener has to do as they grow in size. Low growers are known for their ability to spread quickly, preventing weeds from gaining root. Although it is not required to deadhead spent blooms because they will fade away on their own, aged blossoms can be easily removed with a string trimmer. They are rarely afflicted by illnesses or pests as long as they are not over-watered.
While sedums may thrive in even the poorest soilin fact, low or little soil is their preferred mediumgood drainage is essential for their growth. Too much wetness, especially standing water, will destroy a sedum faster than any drought can.
Sedums, once established, require almost no further water to thrive, even in the driest conditions. Sedums are a great choice for gardens in hot, arid areas like the western United States, but they can grow almost anyplace with sufficient drainage. They can be found sticking up from boulders or sprouting from just a few inches of scree in frigid, alpine regions. Almost every USDA Hardiness Zone has at least one Sedum species. Although most creeping sedums prefer full sun, they can also thrive in moderate shade. Sedum ternatum, a North American native, is a sedum that prefers a little more moisture and shade than its relatives.
Where is the best place to plant sedum?
Sedum (also known as’stone crop flower’) thrives in full to part sun. While taller hybrids require full sun to flower well, creeping varieties can thrive in partial shade.
Sedums prefer a well-drained soil with a pH range of neutral to slightly alkaline. Root and stem rot can be caused by wet, heavy clay.
Tall growing sedums should be spaced 1 to 2 feet apart. Depending on the kind and how rapidly you want it to fill in an area, space low-growing, creeping sedums 6 to 12 inches apart.
Plant sedums when the risk of frost has passed in the spring. Planting transplants till late summer is possible in northern locations. Plant in the spring or fall in warmer climates.
