Are living stones toxic?

Lithops are little, intriguing plants native to southern Africa that may be grown indoors with considerable ease. During a botanical voyage to southern Africa in 1811, William John Burchell discovered the first Lithops. Near the town of Prieska, he discovered a peculiar looking brown stone with a fracture across the surface during his travels in the Northern Cape Province. This strange-looking stone proved out to be a succulent plant upon closer study. Lithos (=stone) and opsis (=like) were given to these plants in the Mesembryanthemaceae (Aizoaceae) plant family because of their stone-like appearance. Because of their resemblance to miniature hoofprints, these plants are called beeskloutjie (cattle hoof), skaappootjie (sheep hoof), or perdeklou (horse’s hoof) in locations where lithops are found. Lithops have evolved to blend in so perfectly with their environment in their native habitats of Namibia and South Africa, resembling the sand and stones they dwell amid in shape, size, and color, that they can be difficult to identify, even for those with a trained eye and years of experience.

Lithops (single and plural, scientific and colloquial names) are found in dry locations in colonies that are widely scattered and poorly populated. The average rainfall in Lithops-affected areas is less than 20 inches, with the majority of the rain falling in the spring and fall. Some species live in places where yearly rainfall is less than 4 inches, and others rely on mist or fog for moisture. They grow on quartz grit or gravely flats, stony ridges and hills of sand, decomposed granite, quartzite, shale, schist, and limestone, among other environments. The Nama Karoo and succulent Karoo are home to the vast majority of Lithops species, which are notably common along the Orange River basin in the Northern Cape, which spans between Namibia and western South Africa.

Lithops can live in these dry environments thanks to their ability to store water, which takes up nearly the entire plant. Each plant is made up of two succulent leaves fused together in an inverted cone shape (although some species will produce multi-headed plants). The division between the two leaves is the fissure at the top of the plant. The taproot unites abruptly at the base of the leaves; there is no stem. The plants can survive for months without rain because to their thick leaves, which can retain adequate water. They wilt and shrink below the soil surface during periods of drought (which is almost always).

These subterranean succulents are tiny and practically stemless. The plants only reach a height of 1/2-1 and a width of 1-3 in their natural habitat, and they grow flush with the ground. However, this creates a challenge with getting light to the subsurface photosynthetic system of the leaf cells (cholorophyll). The wide leaf tips feature windowed cells that allow light into the inner portion of the leaf, where it is diffused before reaching the chlorophyll, which is dispersed throughout the interior leaf edges, to overcome this difficulty.

Lithops comes in at least 37 species (with more being discovered all the time) and 145 variants, all of which look quite similar to one another, differing primarily in body form, patterns, color, and texture. Gray, brown, rust, green, and pink are some of the subtle colors available. The patterns of dots, lines, and patches on the upper surface vary a lot, which helps them to mirror their environment. Where the markings occur, there may also be dimples or indentations. The marks could cover a large portion of the leaf surface, or the windows could cover the majority of the leaf surface.

Most Lithops produce daisy-like yellow, pale orange, or white flowers with numerous petals throughout the autumn and early winter. On sunny days, the blooms blossom in the afternoon and close in the late afternoon. The blossoms appear between the leaves in a fissure. Some flowers have a pleasant aroma. Depending on the species and environment, they range in size from 1/2 to 11/2″.

Because Lithops are self-sterile, pollination is required to create seed. The seed is contained within a hydrochastic 4-8 chambered fruiting capsule that opens only when moistened, revealing the small seeds. Raindrops splash out the seeds from the parent plant to a distance of an inch to a few feet in nature. The capsule shuts after it dries, safeguarding any remaining seeds until the next rain.

The plant enters a period of hibernation after flowering, during which at least one new body grows. As new leaves emerge in the spring, the plants begin to reabsorb the old ones. The new body eventually pushes through the crack between the old leaves. The new leaf fissure forms at a 90-degree angle to the previous fissure. The old leaves eventually wither away, leaving a dry, papery sheath on the side of the new body. Many plants will also divide at this time to generate more than one leaf pair, resulting in a tiny cluster from a single body.

Lithops are popular novelty houseplants because they thrive in low humidity, require little watering and maintenance, and are reasonably easy to grow. These plants don’t take up much space due to their modest size and sluggish, compact growth. Lithops have a lengthy lifespan, ranging from 40 to 50 years. It is feasible to keep a plant in the same pot for a decade or more. Lithops are not harmful to humans or animals. (Some accounts even mention African toddlers drinking these plants to ease their thirst.) In cultivation, their health is dependent on adequate bright light, good soil drainage, and correct watering.

Lithops can be effectively grown on a sunny windowsill (although a greenhouse is ideal) where they receive 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight in the morning and some shade in the afternoon. A southern window is usually the greatest choice, although an unobstructed eastern exposure is also an excellent option. If a plant does not get enough sunshine, it will become skinny and elongated, tilt to one side to get more light, lose color and turn greenish, and eventually die unless better conditions are provided. However, shifting a plant to a stronger light too quickly can cause it to become sunburned and die.

Lithops, like cactus, need well-drained soil to thrive. Use a special cactus potting mix or add sharp sand, perlite, decomposed granite, or other gritty material to standard houseplant potting mix to help with drainage. Because these plants have a huge root system, they require a larger container than the plant size suggests. To give the roots enough room to grow, use pots that are about 3 to 5 inches deep and include drain holes. Place the plant’s top just slightly above the soil’s surface, rather than at the soil’s surface as it would be in nature. To give the plant a more natural appearance, several growers topdress it with gravel or surround it with stones.

Lithops have a yearly growth cycle, and it’s important to only water them at some times and keep the soil dry during others. The most common cause of early death is overwatering. They decay or grow new bodies at the incorrect time of year if they get too much water. They grow stunted if there isn’t enough water. The frequency with which you water is determined by how rapidly the potting media dries out. Drench the plant thoroughly and allow it to dry completely (probably 1-2 weeks). After that, wait a few days before watering again. If you’re unsure, don’t! Watering in the mornings allows the extra water to evaporate and the top layers of soil to dry off fast. Some general watering instructions (which may vary according on the species):

  • Stop watering the plant when it turns dormant in the summer. If the plant begins to shrink, give it just enough water to restore its robust appearance, but just until the top half inch of the soil is soaked.
  • When the plants begin to develop and bloom again in late summer and early fall, resume watering. When the fissure between the leaves begins to separate in preparation for flowering, this is the first sign of growth.
  • During the winter and spring, Lithops should be completely dry. Stop watering so the old leaf pair can dry out and the new leaf pair can grow. The new body should be apparent by early spring. Once the remains of the old body are fully shriveled and dried, watering can be resumed. If you feed the plant too much water too soon, the old “leaves” will want to keep growing and the plant will not develop properly. Remember that when the new leaves grow, the old leaves should completely dry off.

Lithops can withstand extreme heat as long as there is lots of fresh air available. Allowing the plants to freeze is never a good idea.

Succulent seed and seedlings of all kinds and cultivars are now accessible from specialty succulent nurseries. They grow swiftly from seed and can flower in 3 to 4 years if grown in ideal conditions. Sow the seeds in a sandy medium during the summer and cover with a very thin layer of fine sand. To avoid displacing the tiny seeds, water them carefully. Keep the container moist but not waterlogged in a warm sunny location. In a few weeks, the first seeds should germinate (but germination may be spread out over a long period of time, with stragglers taking as long as a year). Reduce watering once the seedlings are well-developed, so that the top 1/4″ of the medium dries out but the lower media remains moist. Excessive watering at this phase may cause damping off of the seedlings, so be careful. Start allowing the plants dry out fully for a few days between waterings when they’re around 2-3 months old, then progressively increase the drying duration. When the plants are around a year old, they can be transplanted.

A multi-headed plant can also be divided to propagate Lithops. Lift the plant, cut through the roots with care, and transplant it right away.

Is white stonecrop poisonous?

Sedum is a genus of succulent, evergreen, herbaceous perennials with mushy, flat or rounded leaves. The plant is generally erect and spreads out across the ground. There are about 300 species in the genus, though many have been relocated to the Hylotelephium genus. The genus name stems from the Latin word sedeo, which means “to sit,” referring to how many sedum species like to sit and sprawl over rocks. In reference to the blooms, the species name, album, comes from Latin and meaning “white.”

White Stonecrop grows well in dry to moist, well-drained soil in full sun, although it may also take mild shade. When fully established, the plant prefers low-fertility sandy or gravelly soils, and its succulent leaves make it drought and heat tolerant. Unless controlled, the plant can be invasive, spreading along the ground via prostrate stems that root at nodes. Because the plant is low to the ground, mat-forming, and rapidly spreads, it can be utilized as ground cover in a sunny location, albeit it may overpower other plants of comparable height. For Triangle Area Green Roofs, White Stonecrop is a preferred plant species. Only light foot traffic is tolerated by White Stonecrop. The leaves are prone to falling off readily, however they can be used to propagate new plants.

Some sources say White Stonecrop is somewhat hazardous if eaten, but others say it isn’t. In any case, young and sensitive stems and leaves can be eaten uncooked. The edible sections of the stems and leaves can still be eaten if they are briefly cooked as the plants age but before they blossom. When consumed in large quantities, the leaves might induce stomach distress.

Except for the occasional slugs and snails, there are no severe diseases or bug concerns. Avoid areas that are damp or inadequately drained.
