Sedum species Hardy and drought-tolerant perennial plants known as stonecrop (Sedum spp.) are well-liked in xeriscaping, rock gardens, and containers. From the ubiquitous, two-foot-tall, long-blooming Autum Joy to the adorable groundcover stonecrops like ‘Dazzleberry,’ stonecrop comes in a range of shapes and sizes.
Sedum Care
Sedum plants, often known as stonecrop, do best in full sun, with little to no water, and, most critically, on soil that drains properly. For the flower bed and border, there are larger kinds that reach heights and widths of exceeding two feet. Old favorites for cottage gardens include “Fall Joy. Bright green, gray, and red ground cover kinds that spread swiftly and blossom in the early summer include “Angelina. everything in between as well! They are excellent container plants and do well in most gardens. Sedum plants feature succulent leaves that can be any color—gray, green, purple, blue, or even variegated—and can have anything from tiny needles to larger, fleshier leaves. Bees and butterflies adore them. The nicest part is that they are perennials and return year after year.
Here are a few expert recommendations for growing sedum plants that will look their best:
- Use a well-drained soil at all times. If you’re planting them in containers, make the soil mixture very permeable by adding some shredded bark or sand. Grow them in raised beds and containers if your garden soil is heavy, or amend it.

In my yard, creeping sedums, often called stonecrops, provide endless fascination. Over the course of my many years as a gardener, they rank among the most adaptable, drought-tolerant, and simple-to-grow perennials I’ve ever grown. In the winter, the leaves of evergreen species take on colours of crimson and russet. PROPAGATION: From spring to midsummer, propagate plants by division or seed in the spring or fall. Plant in rock gardens, walls, recesses in walkways, and pots. You may also use it as a border edging or in sweeps on slopes. The majority of creeping sedums like full sun, although they can also tolerate little shade. They prefer medium to poor garden soil that drains well; once they are established, no additional watering is required. They cannot endure any amount of time in standing water.

Creeping sedums change from season to season
Creeping sedums are attractive for their dependability and lack of fussiness, but I’m also drawn to them for their succulent leaves, lengthy flowering cycles, and, in some cases, year-round attractiveness in the garden. Sedum blooms often come in little, star-shaped clusters that range in color from white to yellow to purple to pink, and are no larger than an inch in diameter and 4 to 5 inches tall. The carpets of blossoms they generate when planted in large numbers are stunning. Many evergreen sedums, such as Sedum album “Murale” and Sedum stenopetalum, blush to a rich red or bronze color in the fall and even throughout the winter. These stunning contrasts to an otherwise inert landscape last until early spring. They look particularly lovely on a snowy background.
One of the simplest plants to grow from seed, cuttings, or divisions is the sedum. Stem cuttings or divisions will guarantee the maintenance of a plant’s traits once you’ve found one you like because sedums don’t always grow true from seed. Sedums spread quickly, yet they are not invasive. They are easily lifted and transported because of their thin roots. As long as there is adequate drainage, they may survive the winter in most planters and come out of dormancy in the early to midspring.

A few ways to use creeping sedums
Sedums that are resilient make lovely staples. In a section of my rock garden, I utilize a lot of sedums to simulate a cascade. You can blend several sedums, such as the white-flowered Sedum album, the S. grisebachii, and the yellow-flowered Sedum sexangulare (foreground, first photo below) (background). They perform well in a region that can be seen from above.
These year-round, low-maintenance plants are ideal for containers. You won’t need to bring the pots indoors for the winter because creeping sedums do well in containers. Additionally, because of their drought tolerance, you won’t need to locate someone to water them while you are away. Sedums, like the yellow-flowered S. sexangulare (Sempervivum spp. and cvs., Zones 410, second photo below), can be used as underplantings or in combination with other succulents like hens and chicks.
Make stepping stones or rock walls’ sharp edges softer. Within cracks in a stone wall or between stepping stones, sedums, like S. spurium ‘Fuldaglut,’ grow with almost no soil (third photo, below). Use small, mature seedlings, usually referred to as plugs, and combine with some fine gravel and soil.
Utilize a patchwork of sedums to tame a difficult terrain. Maybe you have a spot where gardening and lawn mowing have never worked well together, like a hillside with compacted soil. It might be the perfect place to use creeping sedums, like the pink-flowered S. spurium ‘John Creech’ and others, to intertwine regions of color and texture. The “quilt will vary three times a year as the sedums exhibit the colors of their early-season foliage, then their blossoms, and finally their winter leaves in various tones.
Should I prune my sedum to prepare for the winter?
As soon as the blooms start to fade in the winter, you can trim the sedum back, or you can wait until the ground turns green in the spring. Use pruning shears to cut the entire plant back to the ground, or break the stalks by hand at the ground level. The sedum will reappear from the roots in the spring.
For frost, do I need to cover my sedum?
My new succulents, which I planted in containers over the course of last summer, have practically turned to mush as a result of the most recent cold spell, Howard writes.

She also revealed some of the hard lessons she had to learn about cultivating succulents after she too lost some of her favorite specimens in a prior cycle of extremely cold temps.
Here are some of her tips for choosing succulents that can withstand freezing weather as well as what she does to safeguard her collection of succulents and cacti:
She has discovered that the agave, “After Glow,” is more tolerant of freezing temperatures and that the yucca, “Wall Bright Star,” is resilient to 0 degrees. These examples were discovered by Baron at Petaluma’s Cottage Gardens.
Specimens with variegation appear to be less robust. Frost is not tolerated by euphorbias. Despite the fact that they are supposedly hardy to, say, 30 degrees, container plants are more sensitive to lower temperatures.
Crassula sarcocaulis can withstand temperatures as low as 10. Hens and chicks, often known as sempervivums, can endure freezing temperatures. Stonecrops, commonly known as sedums, survive the freezing temperatures with little obvious damage.
Baron advises covering ALL of your succulent plants in breathable, frost-protective cloth that enables moisture and sunlight to pass through.
Although they must be removed during the day, thin sheets thrown over the plant in cold weather also works nicely.
Place the containers in sheltered spots like eaves. Wait until the weather warms up before going out on the water.
Run some low-voltage lights in your mini-greenhouse or bigger structure for added warmth, and keep the pots lightly covered in floating row covers—a frost-protective material—until no longer necessary.
Finally, her own succulent plants have survived because she covered them, including those in her greenhouse, in the ground, and in pots.
When the temperature dropped to 28 degrees, the sedums, sempervivums, Orostachys, Senecio mandraliscae, Crassula cocinea ‘Campfire,’ Rhodiela, and Aloe nobilis in my garden were unharmed.
Read the plant label before buying succulents because it will usually indicate whether or not the plant is cold-hardy. Some species within a given genus may be more resilient than others.
A protracted rainy period like the one we had will also reduce hardiness, as will the number of days with low temperatures.
The slightly more fragile succulent variety can be successfully grown by readers who live in a warmer area.
Surprisingly, visiting nearby neighbors who have had little to no plant frost damage will also assist you choose which succulents will do well in your own garden.
