How To Build A Sedum Roof?

Of course, a well-engineered roof protects your home from the elements, but the one placed over Sarah Jack and Scott Harris’s eat-in kitchen goes above and beyond. The tiny flat-roofed extension off their 1925 Colonial Revival helps slow down and filter rainwater flow by being planted with hundreds of low-growing succulents. Green roofs on homes, such as theirs, protect natural rivers from greasy street debris by reducing the likelihood of municipal storm-drain systems overflowing. It also keeps the space beneath it warmer in the winter and up to 8 degrees cooler in the summer, lowering utility expenses. The 140 square feet of flora also assist to absorb pollutants, and for $13 to $45 per square foot installed, they should last about twice as long as a standard roof. For all of these reasons, the Teaneck, New Jersey, couple felt comfortable about spending the money on the environmentally friendly house improvement. They do, however, value its aesthetic attractiveness. “The roof is very vibrant and colorful,” Sarah remarks. “It has unquestionably improved our perspective.”

Because they flourish in a soilless growing media and are drought tolerant, hardy sedums are the most popular choice for green roofs. To keep them looking their best, all they require is a yearly trim and some fertilizer. Homeowners can choose from a variety of plants that are ideal for their environment. Prep the Roof

Even a flat roof should have a slight incline to direct water toward gutters; for a green-roof installation, the incline should be at least 1/4 inch per foot of run. A structural engineer should evaluate the roof before the plants go up to make sure it can hold the weight of the tailored growing medium and plants. Each tray in this system adds up to 30 pounds of load per square foot when saturated, putting a typical roof meant to hold roughly 25 pounds under stress. The roof was designed to accommodate the additional load and then coated with a waterproofing membrane for this project. Rob Gaffney, a green-roof installer, applies a second layer of rubber roofing membrane as a root barrier to protect the roof from harm.

Add Planted Trays

The black plastic trays, which were planted four months ago and tended at a nursery, arrive 95 percent covered with greenery by truck. They arrive stacked on plastic-wrapped racks, ready for shipping. To avoid the plants from scorching, the plastic is removed when the trays are unloaded, and the trays are hoisted to the rooftop by forklift (in this example) or crane. Decorative L-shaped aluminum edging is temporarily weighted down around the edge of the roof where it will cover the edges of the trays before the trays can be fitted. The 40-pound planted trays are set in rows on the roof and inside the edging, starting in a corner and working right to left. Installers begin by placing the trays at the roof’s lowest point and work their way up and across the slope.

Connect the Trays

Any tray can be removed from the roof for repair without disturbing the others with a modular system like the one employed here. For stability, the front and right plastic lips of adjoining trays overlap the left and back sides of neighboring trays, forming a blanket that eliminates seams and lowers temperature swings. The trays are elevated 1/2 inch above the roof’s surface by feet constructed into the underside, allowing runoff to readily flow underneath and into the gutters.

Cut Trays to Fit

Typically, trays must be chopped to fit between the edge and the last full tray in a row. An installer takes measurements for each end piece and then uses a wax pencil to imprint his mark on a whole tray. Because the trays are packed with a difficult aggregate growing medium, they are cut with a gas-powered concrete saw fitted with a masonry blade. The cut end of the row butts up against the last complete tray. One installer set the rows of trays, another gathered measurements for the end pieces, and a third cut the end pieces on the ground before sending a few rows up to the roof.

Remove Soil Elevators

Each tray comes with a soil elevator, a 4-inch-wide band of white plastic that permits the growing media to elevate 1 inch over the tray. The additional height, in addition to the curves incorporated into the edges of each tray, permits soil-to-soil contact between the trays, allowing water, nutrients, and beneficial organisms to travel laterally between the trays. Sharing available water lowers the likelihood of dry or extremely moist patches forming. The installer pulls out the soil elevator at an angle after a couple of rows of trays are in place to prevent removing the growing media. This improves the system’s insulating R-value by blending the roof together nearly instantaneously and reducing air gap between the trays.

Fit the Last Modules

While the planted sedums can endure some foot activity, the optimum installation pattern is one that allows installers to walk off the roof without damaging the plants. They then use exterior-grade screws to secure the edging to the sides of the modules from a ladder.

Water Well

After the trays have been fitted, the soil is watered to settle it. Green roof plants like these sedums don’t need to be watered unless there’s a four-week period of extreme heat with less than an inch of rain. The growing medium might shrink during dry seasons, leaving it vulnerable to weeds. With a self-coiling garden hose threaded into the second-floor bathroom sink faucet, Sarah and Scott can water this roof. Then all that’s required is a yearly haircut—along with some fertilizer as advised by a soil test—to keep the green roof in good shape.

Does a sedum roof need drainage?

On a level roof, or one with a slope of less than 3 degrees, the following layer should be a drainage mat to ensure that excess rainwater is quickly channeled away from the plants’ roots. Sedum plants are especially well adapted to live in dry soils, and they cannot survive in wet soil. The drainage layer keeps them comfortable, and it also has a secondary purpose: few plant species, aside from Sedums, Saxifrages, and Sempervivums, can thrive in shallow soils for long periods of time unless they have an abundant supply of water. The drainage layer of a large sedum roof actually helps to avoid weed infestations by ‘droughting out’ most of the impostors that survive the harsh rooftop circumstances.

There is no need for a drainage mat on a pitched roof because rainfall will run off naturally.

Water retention fleece

You must lay down a layer of water retention fleece before attaching your sedum matting. This blanket is lightweight and can absorb up to 9 litres of water per square metre. It ensures that the plants will have adequate water to last the duration of a typical UK summer.

The water retention fleece is placed on top of the sedum matting. An edging of your choice will keep everything in place, and you’ve got yourself a living sedum green roof.

How do you build a green roof?

We’ll move on to construction now that we’ve covered the design aspects of a green roof. The steps below apply to large-scale green roof construction. Intensive roof construction is similar to standard roof construction, but it may include additional aspects.

Step One – Primary waterproofing layer
