Most umbrella plants have two or more trunks, while one trunk umbrella plants are not uncommon. Multiple branches with palmate compound or whorled leaves are common. They have a striking appearance that resembles fingers emerging from the plant. They usually have four to twelve leaflets. This gives them the appearance of umbrella spokes, hence the name.
The plant also has leaflets that are nearly oval in shape and are shiny. These leaflets are about a foot long and a foot wide. The size of the tree is primarily determined by its age and size.
