You can prune it as it grows to keep it in the form you desire and prevent it from growing any taller than you want. This can be done at any time of year for indoor plants. Make cuts slightly above the leaves with a sharp pair of pruners or a knife. To make the plant appear more even, make cuts to break up denser bunches.

Cut a stem at the plant’s base and wrap it in a damp paper towel to keep it from drying out. To limit the quantity of moisture lost during the roots process, cut each leaf in half horizontally.

Let’s look at why your umbrella plant is loosing leaves and what you can do to get it back on track.
Using an Umbrella Plants that shed leaves are usually stressed as a result of poor care. Dropping leaves can be caused by overwatering or underwatering, low light, temperature extremes, repotting, pests, diseases, under/overfeeding, low humidity, or a new location. Old leaves will fall naturally as well.
Can a schefflera be cut back?
Cut each of your plant’s tall stems back to a few inches lower than you want the plant to be with hand pruners. Look at the stem closely before cutting, then cut approximately a half-inch above where a leaf is attached. Anvil pruners produce a cleaner cut than bypass pruners.

Fill the container halfway with rooting material, then bury the cuttings’ bottoms to just below the lowest surviving leaf. (Remove another leaf if they aren’t deep enough to stand erect.)
Can umbrella plant take full sun?
When cultivated in moist soil, an umbrella plant can take full sun, but one grown in partial shade can better withstand dry soil and strong winds. Sunburn is more likely on the leaves of an umbrella plant planted in a container outdoors, especially if the soil is not kept reasonably moist.
