Take a step back and examine the contour of your tree to get a sense of how you want it to appear. Make your cuts immediately above a node, which is where the leaf joins to the stem or where another stem branches off, on the rubber tree plant. Pruning just above a leaf scar is also an option.
Remove roughly a third to half of the plant’s branches, but don’t remove any more leaves than is required. New growth will emerge from these wounds gradually, so don’t be surprised if the plant appears a little scrawny after pruning.
Should I trim my rubber plant?

Can rubber plants be in direct sunlight?

How do you do air layering?
Air layering is a straightforward process. To wrap around an injured piece of the stem, you’ll need moist sphagnum moss. Peel the bark away from an area in the middle of a branch, then wrap the moss around the cut and fasten it with floral ties or plant twine. To keep the moisture in, wrap the entire thing in plastic wrap.
You can also make a basic cut with an upward slant about two-thirds of the way through (be careful not to cut all the way). Then, to prevent the wound from closing, insert a small piece of hard plastic or a toothpick. The moss and plastic can then be wrapped around it as before. This strategy works nicely for plants that aren’t too woody.
The time it takes for a plant to generate roots varies, but it usually takes a couple of weeks to a month. Once you’ve established roots, remove the plant material and pot it up like any other plant.
