More variegated types require more light to help bring out their colors, so make sure they get plenty of it.
Water: During their summer growing season, these plants require extra water. It’s important to keep the soil moist but not soggy. To keep the leaves moist and to assist your plant receive more sunshine, wipe them down with a damp towel. If you don’t want to wipe clean every leaf, misting is another alternative. To avoid root rot, keep your rubber plant in well-draining soil at all times.
You want to keep the soil dry but not too dry during their dormant season in the winter. Allow the top few inches of soil to dry between waterings to avoid overwatering. If your rubber plant’s leaves begin to droop, it’s alerting you it needs more water.
Temperatures: Rubber plants prefer temperatures ranging from 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. They can withstand temperatures as low as 50°F in the winter. A healthy temperature balance is ideal for this plant’s growth, just as it is for water and sunlight. Because of its tropical origins, it favors wet and humid air, but it may thrive in less humid conditions. Rubber plants are sensitive to temperature variations and prefer to dwell in regions where the humidity and temperature remain constant.
Toxicity: The sap of a rubber plant might irritate some people’s skin. After touching your plant, make sure to fully wash your hands, especially if you come into contact with the sap. Depending on how much of this plant is taken, it might produce mild stomach problems or more serious symptoms including diarrhea or vomiting.
Mealy bugs, mites, scales, and aphids are just a few of the pests that might infest your rubber plant. These bugs can be removed with a warm soap and water solution or an insecticidal soap if detected early.

The simplest method of propagation is to take a short branch from a healthy rubber plant and root it in soil or water. Before planting, you should let the sap from the stem dry. Air layering is another method of propagation. To do so, cut a healthy plant open and insert a toothpick into the aperture. To keep it on the toothpick, cover it with damp moss and then wrap it in plastic wrap. Cut the branch off and replant it in different soil once you detect roots forming in the moss.
Pruning: Pruning your rubber plant will help it support itself, promote new development, and keep its size under control so it doesn’t get too big. Pruning a rubber plant is ideally done in the spring to prevent the winter, although it can be done at any time of year. Cutting the branches will cause some of the plant’s sap to leak out.
Rubber plant maintenance is simple if you keep an eye on your plant and respect its demand for balance. If you want to amaze your guests with a tall houseplant, rubber plants are definitely worth the effort.
How can I make my rubber plant grow faster?
Don’t you already know what I’m about to say? So, let’s get this party started! “PROPER. PLANT. CARE!” says the narrator.
You guessed correctly. The most efficient strategy to encourage your Rubber Tree to grow quickly is to provide for all of its requirements. Light, water, nutrition, and space must all be taken into consideration.
Locate a location for your plant that receives plenty of bright, indirect light. Pull it back from the window a bit or draw a sheer curtain to protect the leaves from direct sunlight. While you’re at it, make sure the area where you’re going to put your plant has regular warm temperatures (above 65° F) and isn’t subjected to excessive hot or cold gusts.
It’s critical to have good watering habits. Only water as needed (when the top inch of soil is dry) and thoroughly, ensuring that the soil and pot drain well.
Rubber trees aren’t heavy feeders, but a well-balanced fertilizer will help keep the soil nutrient-rich. During the growing season, all you need is one treatment, diluted to half-strength, about once a month.
Finally, make sure your plant has enough area in its container. If the roots are brushing up against the container’s sides, pot up to the next size, leaving one to two inches between the roots and the pot’s walls.
How can I get it to branch out from only one stalk?
To get a plant that branches out, you have two possibilities. To begin, you can simply buy it that way (instant gratification). Alternatively, if you have a single stalked rubber plant, cut the top off just above one of the leaves.
At the very least, you should see a couple of fresh stems sprouting soon.
If you have a woody rubber plant, you should consider air layering it.
You may propagate your plant at the same time this manner!
Finally, there’s a technique known as notching, in which you don’t actually cut anything off the plant.
Simply making selective partial cuts on a branch just above a node might cause side branches to emerge.
Why is my rubber plant not growing?
In the vast majority of cases, the answer is simple: light. If your rubber plant isn’t already in front of a window, I urge you to do so immediately and wait. Patience is required.
It spends the majority of its time in a dark area.
When it comes to plant growth, there are no shortcuts.
The most vital component is light, and your rubber plant will not live and grow effectively if it is placed in a dark area of your home.
Why do my leaves fall off, still green, until the entire branch is defoliated?
There could be a number of reasons for this. One possibility is a rapid drop in light. Have you recently purchased your plant from a nursery and taken it home?
Rubber plants frequently show their displeasure by shedding some leaves until they become accustomed to their new surroundings.
However, because light is so important, your rubber plant must be placed directly in front of a window.
Why are the new leaves smaller than the older ones?
This indicates to me that the growing conditions were less favorable when your rubber plant produced smaller leaves. This is most likely due to a lack of light. Change the location of your plant to one that receives more light (you guessed it…in front of a window).
How do I keep my Ruby leaves pink?
If your Ficus elastica ‘Ruby’ leaves aren’t as pink as they should be, you’ll need to increase the amount of light. To get the greatest effects, place your Ruby directly in front of a window. This will bring out the best color in the leaves.
However, because variegated types are more vulnerable to direct sunlight than non-variegated varieties, too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
I should point out that burning is usually caused by quickly raising the brightness.
Variegated rubber plants can withstand a lot of sun, and I’ve seen them thrive in direct sunlight.
As a result, whenever you move a plant into much brighter light/sun, take it slowly to avoid scorching.
In most circumstances, growing these plants indoors, Eastern exposure windows, or even Western or Southern windows, should suffice.
Outside, rubber plants thrive in full daylight, so there’s no reason you can’t offer your plant as much sun as it needs indoors, where the light intensity is much lower.
Why are some of my leaves folding like a taco?
It’s most likely a problem with irrigation. Take a look at the plant in the picture below. This was a buddy who inquired about my situation. She was measuring moisture in her plant with a moisture meter and hadn’t watered it in months. Months!
The moisture meter said she was fine, but the soil remained bone dry for a long time after a few months, and the ensuing leaves were crumpled, folded, and taco-like.
Why do my leaves get discolored, then turned yellowish, and then turn brown and fall off?
Improper irrigation is usually the cause of this. Either the soil has been left too dry for an extended period of time (“underwatering”) or it has been kept too moist for an extended period of time (“overwatering”).
Check the soil with your fingertips as soon as you spot yellow leaves, and lift the pot if possible to check the weight.
Is the soil fully dry, and has it been dry for an extended period of time?
Is the pot light in weight?
Is it dripping wet, and has it been that way for some time? Yellowing leaves can be caused by either of these causes.
When it comes to watering, you must establish a balance.
Reread the section on watering previously in this blog post and make an effort to follow all of the other cultural practices, such as light, fertilizing, and so on.
It’s also possible that your rubber plant is badly pot confined and requires repotting into a larger container.

Why are there brown spots on the leaves?
It’s possible that a bacterial or fungal infection is at blame. Bacterial infections usually have a yellowish halo surrounding the brown area, whereas fungal infections usually don’t.
Plants can become infected if they are kept excessively damp, especially in places with little light and poor air circulation.
Why do my leaves have tiny white spots?
There’s no need to be concerned if you notice little white specks on the outside edge of your rubber plant leaves.
Lithocysts are the microscopic white spots that make up a lithocyst.
Lithocysts are swollen cells in rubber plants that contain calcium carbonate crystals.
I’m not sure what they’re there for, but it’s perfectly natural!
Why are my leaves curling up and drooping?
This is almost certainly due to a lack of water. The leaves can droop and curl if the soil is kept too dry or too damp.
Feel the soil of your plant as soon as you detect your leaves curling and/or drooping.
Is it extremely dry?
Is it raining?
This will inform you of the situation.
If you have neglected your plant and it has become too dry, you must water it more frequently.
There could be a variety of reasons for your soil remaining moist for an extended period of time:
- Your plant will stay wet for longer if it is in low light. Place your plant near a window.
- Has your plant been resting in a saucer full of water for a long time?
- Rubber plants could be in serious trouble as a result of this.
- Excess water should always be discarded.
- Is your plant in a pot that doesn’t have a drainage hole?
- This is a complete no-no.
- Transplant your rubber plant into a pot with a drainage hole as soon as possible.
- Ficus are quite sensitive to being submerged in water.
- Maybe everything else is in order, but your plant is in a cool/cold environment.
- It should be moved to a warmer place.
- These plants despise chilly temperatures and are irritated by drafts.
Lower humidity might also contribute to curling. I wouldn’t be concerned if the curling is little and the plant appears to be healthy otherwise.
Many parts of the world experience harsh winters, but you may make your home more humid by using a humidifier. Although proper watering is considerably more vital, increasing humidity is also beneficial to your plants.
Why are the new leaves deformed?
This can be caused by a multitude of factors, including pests, nutrient deficiencies, and inconsistent and/or incorrect maintenance, as with many other aspects of houseplant care. All of these stresses on the plant can result in distorted leaves.
Check for pests on your plant.
Is there anything crawling or flying in the area? If everything appears to be in order, consider your care. Have you been neglecting your houseplant? Maybe let it dry out for a long time while the new leaves sprouted? Perhaps it’s also in a dimly lit area?
Deformed young leaves can develop from inconsistent care.
Your plant will reward you and new growth will seem normal again if you resume constant watering, light levels, and so on.
Nutrient deficiencies are less prevalent, but if you use a good, complete fertilizer like Dyna-Gro Grow (available on Amazon), you shouldn’t have any problems.
And, nonetheless, you should fertilize!
Why are there brown edges on the variegated rubber plants like tineke and ruby?
This can be caused by inconsistency in watering or sun scorch from not adequately acclimating your plant to brighter light. Rubber plants with variegated leaves can withstand a lot of direct sunlight. If your plant has previously been in a darker location, gradually adapt it to any direct sunlight to avoid any problems.
If your plant is growing in extremely warm or hot settings and is exposed to direct sunlight without acclimating, the leaves may be scorched.
Variegated plants are particularly vulnerable.
Brown spots on your variegated leaves are usually caused by insufficient watering or general soil moisture extremes.
This can be caused by both “underwatering” and “overwatering.”
As soon as the top one or two inches of the pot (depending on the size of the pot) are dry, give your plant a good watering.
Remove any surplus water.
How can I get hard water stains to come off the leaves?
Those obstinate hard water stains on your rubber plant leaves can be safely and quickly removed. 1 teaspoon white vinegar in a gallon of warm water is all it takes.
Wipe the leaves with hard water stains gently.
The vinegar aids in the dissolution of those pesky mineral deposits left by hard tap water.
Why did my rubber plant drop leaves when I first brought it home?
When you first bring a plant home, it’s common for it to drop leaves in a spectacular manner. The plant may be shocked by the change from a bright, humid greenhouse to normal indoor settings.
To make the transition a little easier, set your plant directly in front of a window (at all times, but especially when you first bring a plant home).
Why is my plant staying bushy but not growing tall?
If your rubber plant remains bushy and does not appear to be expanding, it most likely requires additional light. Give your plant some time if you’ve just transferred it into brighter settings. Watering, lighting, and fertilizing properly will eventually bring you there, but be patient.

Rubber plants, as you’ve discovered, can cause a slew of issues.
They are, however, simple to grow if you follow my cultural norms for light, hydration, and soil.
It’s one of my simplest and least finicky plants.
How do you make a rubber plant bushier?
Take a step back and take a look at your rubber plant. Consider its location and current growth when deciding how you want it to look.
If your rubber plant is on a table or shelf where there isn’t much room for it to develop, it’s usually best kept as a short, circular shrub.
Pruning lateral branches will encourage new growth to fill in the plant’s centre portion, so pick a size you can work with and then let it fill in on its own.
Step 2: Remove any branches which seem out of place.
Begin by clipping back any lower branches that appear to be growing straight out horizontally or that are interfering with the plant’s ideal shape.
Some branches will grow in unusual directions, twisted, or at a significantly faster rate than others. To keep the plant looking tidy and appealing, remove these.
To keep the plant from looking overly dense, trim some branches and leaves from the middle section, but this is a matter of personal opinion.
Step 3: Cut to your desired height.
Trim the top set of leaves before the node after your rubber plant has reached the appropriate height. By cutting before the node rather than after it, you’re essentially leaving a stump. The plant will no longer be able to send out any more vertical chutes as a result of this.
Trim the top of the rubber plant when it reaches a maximum height of four feet for a more compact shrub-like shape. Instead of growing tall and narrow, this will encourage the plant to grow more horizontally and produce a more rounded form.
Step 4: Encourage leaf coverage by pruning often.
As previously said, caring for a rubber plant as a bushy shrub needs a little more effort than caring for it as a larger tree-like houseplant. Pruning is required to maintain a bushy rubber plant.
When a cut is made after a node, one or two additional branches will begin to grow from the location where the cut was made. Cut them back as well after the plant has recovered from the previous pruning and sent out some new chutes.
You may manage how thick and bushy the plant develops by trimming the new lateral growth on a regular basis.
Step 5: Propagate new cuttings back into the pot.
Propagating rubber plant cuttings is simple and straightforward. You can produce a more shrub-like appearance by inserting these cuttings back into the pot of your rubber plant, which will assist to fill in the bottom areas of the plant.
After pruning, cut branches can be directly transplanted back into the same pot as the original plant, or they can be rooted first in a glass of water.

Can a small rubber plant grow big?

When to repot your rubber plant
When your rubber plant’s roots have completely filled the pot, it’s time to repot it. Or when the roots begin to grow through the drainage holes in the pot’s bottom.
Use a well-draining potting soil to avoid root rot. Mix in additional perlite, sand, or vermiculite to make it even better. Always check for drainage holes in your new planter pot.
Instead of using a plastic pot, use a terra cotta one. Moisture can evaporate because the clay is permeable. All of the moisture will be trapped inside the plastic.
The plant’s active growing season begins in the spring. It will be brimming with vigor and in the greatest possible shape to withstand the stress of being repotted.
How often should I water rubber plant?
Ficus elastica is a tropical evergreen tree that can be found in southern China, Southeast Asia, and Indonesia. It is a member of the Moraceae family of plants, and its latex sap was used to create rubber until synthetics became accessible. Hevea brasiliensis, on the other hand, produces the majority of natural rubber. Although many plants contain significant levels of isoprene, the latexy sap of these two plants has enough to be used to create rubber.

Moraceae is a plant family that includes shrubs, trees, and lianas that all leak a latexy sap when wounded. Foliar polymorphisms are found in members of this family, which means that their leaf forms vary depending on their life stage. Most other plants produce the same leaf forms throughout their lifetimes, thus this is a peculiar trait.
Can tolerate bright direct light and thrives in medium to bright indirect light.

Over time, this plant will grow to a maximum height of around 30′ (10m) with a spread of about 10″ (3.2m). As a houseplant, however, it will be much smaller.
It’s a plant that’s generally laid-back. Scale and mealybugs are possible. Scale bugs and mealybugs can be treated with weekly horticultural (Neem) oil sprays and regular wipe-downs of the plant as soon as they develop.
If eaten, this plant is poisonous to cats, dogs, and humans. Houseplants should always be kept out of reach of little children and dogs.
