- Select a container with a drainage hole in the bottom. Pothos plants dislike sitting in moist soil because they decay quickly.
- Pothos should be planted in a well-draining potting mix (or a soilless mix). To improve the drainage capacity of your potting mix, add a few handfuls of perlite or coco coir if you have it on hand.
- Pothos looks great in a hanging basket with the vines showing off, or in a standard pot on a plant stand. Although their aerial roots—which they employ to attach themselves to surfaces such as trees or other vertical structures—may peel paint, they can be permitted to grow up walls.
Can I use cactus potting soil for pothos?
Pothos can be grown in hanging baskets with its long, luscious vines trailing downward or trained to grow over windows and trellises. Low to medium light is sufficient for the plant, with the more colorful variegated pothos requiring a little more light, such as near a window with a sheer drape to filter the light. Pothos plants, like other houseplants, absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, making them a desirable addition to a home for both plant health and aesthetic appeal.
Types of Soil for Pothos
Pothos-friendly growth mixes include elements that make it easy for the plant’s roots to get oxygen. Pothos can be grown in a variety of common houseplant soil mixtures, but don’t put it in soil suited for succulents or cactus. Succulent soils drain too quickly, depriving pothos of the moisture it need. Planting pothos in garden soil is another a no-no since it’s excessively compacted and may include insects such as gnats, which can infest the house and spread to other houseplants.
Despite the fact that most indoor grow mixes aren’t labeled especially for pothos, most acceptable blends contain one or more of the components listed below.
- Bark: Bark, usually from pine or fir trees, keeps the combination light and allows for drainage.
- Coconut coir: Made from the husk that lies between the coconut’s fruit and its hard outer shell, coconut coir is absorbent and water-retentive. It gently releases the water, which is excellent to pothos.
- Perlite is a light and airy natural byproduct of volcanic glass. It not only prevents the potting mix from compacting, but it also helps to retain moisture.
- Peat moss is a very absorbent and lightweight material harvested from moss bogs. This ingredient is frequently used as the principal base in indoor potting mixes, along with coco coir.
- Sand for horticulture: Sand improves drainage and gives structural stability to the soil, which helps anchor the roots of huge pothos.
- Hand-mixed: Combine 4 parts peat moss, 2 parts perlite, 1 part sand, and 1 part shredded bark in a hand-mixed mixture.
Drainage
In addition to growing pothos in a well-draining soil, caring for pothos requires planting it in a well-draining pot. To let the water to drain, choose a pot with holes in the bottom. If the plant is tiny enough, it can be placed in a sink or tub with easy access to water.
If sink watering isn’t an option, use a pot with a saucer that sits below the level of the drainage holes to keep the pothos’ roots out of the water. Before adding the grow mix and the pothos plant, add 1 or 2 inches of gravel or tiny rocks to the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Moisture Retention and Aeration
Planting pothos on soil that drains well and maintains moisture may seem paradoxical. Nonetheless, it creates an ideal environment for the plant’s roots that closely resembles the plant’s natural home in Southeast Asia.
Water-retentive elements like peat moss and coco coir, mixed with well-draining ingredients like sand or perlite, help water to move through the mix while retaining a tiny quantity to keep the plant’s roots from drying out between waterings.
The larger size soil components such as bark keep the mix light and generate air pockets, so the roots also may access oxygen.
Nutrients
Some indoor potting mixes include plant food, although depending on the variety, extra feedings are usually required from 1 to 6 months after repotting. During their active growing season, pothos benefit from fertilization every 4 to 6 weeks once feedings begin (spring and summer). During the late fall and winter, fertilizing can be reduced by half.
Pothos loves soil that is slightly acidic, with a pH of 6.1 to 6.8 on the pH scale. Most indoor grow mixtures, fortunately, fall within that range as well. The presence of yellowing leaves on an unhappy plant shows that the soil is overly alkaline. pH testers are inexpensive and may be found in gardening stores and online. Adding peat moss to the surface of the soil, known as “top dressing,” can assist lower alkalinity if needed.
What should I repot my pothos in?
In the bottom of a clean pot, add an inch or two of potting mix. If you’re repotting your pothos to allow it more room to grow, use a pot that’s a few inches larger than the root ball. This can be the old pot after it’s been washed or a new pot of the same size if you’re repotting due to root rot.
Do pothos like crowded roots?
So you know what I’m talking about: certain plants want to be snug in their pots and will suffer if they’re put in a pot that’s too big:
Hoyas are often epiphytes that prefer to dry out between waterings. Both of these qualities indicate that plants won’t need repotting until their roots wrap around the inside of the pot or the container requires more frequent watering than usual.
Peace lilies prefer to be kept cozy in their pots, which I suppose is because they prefer to be kept moist but not overwatered. They would quickly develop root rot if they had too much excess soil.
For the same reason as hoya, philodendron, epipremnum, and pothos are content to be snug in their pots. Because they grow on trees, they require a chunky, well-draining soil to prevent root rot.
If you can only give them house plant potting soil, make sure they don’t have too much extra space in their container because root rot is something we don’t want (at this point).
Because succulents and cacti have small root systems, they rarely require repotting. I wouldn’t recommend repotting them till you see roots emerging from the nursery pot’s bottom.
Before watering succulents, make sure the soil is completely dry. Some experts even use a blowdryer to dry the soil so that the plants don’t acquire root rot.
Allowing your plants to be a little tight in their pots will aid in the drying of the soil before rot sets in.
Is Miracle Grow potting mix good for pothos?
Pothos isn’t fussy about anything, but it prefers a nutrient-rich potting soil like Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix. This light blend allows water to move more freely through the soil, eliminating the risk of “wet feet” (the term for plants that fail because their water never properly dried out). When it outgrows its current container, repot it in a larger one; you’ll know it’s time when the leaves begin to wilt no matter what.
Should I water pothos after repotting?
Arrange the vines to form a circle around the pot. It’s quite acceptable to gently remove any distinct plants apart and give them their own tiny room in the new pot if the plant was heavily root-bound and needs soaking.
Backfill the planter pot with potting soil gently. Place some soil between the roots so that they are extending laterally out from the stem, similar to the sun’s rays. Cover the roots with potting soil, leaving a 1/2 to 1 space at the top of the planter to allow for watering.
It’s time to water the newly repotted Pothos plant once you’re satisfied with the amount of potting soil and the arrangement of the vines. Fill the planter with clean water, being careful not to let it overflow over the sides. Watering the plant will likely aid in the natural compression of the soil, and you may notice that the soil level is a little low after watering. If necessary, add a little more potting soil and lay the plant aside to drain.
Do pothos need shallow pots?
Because pothos are climbing plants, they will not grow to be very tall, but rather will grow down. A shallow pot allows your Pothos to grow thicker, keeping the vines from becoming too long or lanky, and it will appear much fuller and healthier.
When should I replant my pothos?

How do I make my pothos more full?
Pothos don’t need fertilizer and aren’t heavy feeders, but if you want them to develop faster, you’ll need to give them a boost. Consider this option first if you’ve been growing it in the same pot for years.
Fertilize the soil at least once or twice a month with compost or liquid seaweed solution. This will increase the plant’s foliage growth and make it appear heavier and fuller.
Use a hand trowel to lightly mix in the necessary amount of solid fertilizer on top of the soil. To activate the fertilizer, water the plant.
If you’re using a liquid fertilizer, combine the fertilizer and water in a watering can, then pour the solution into the pot as if you were watering it. To avoid burning the plant, dilute it to about half strength.
If you have a Pothos plant that grows in water, I don’t advocate fertilizing it. It could cause the plant to decay by attracting algae development. Rather, refilling the water once a week will suffice.
It’s crucial to keep in mind that too much fertilizer can harm the plant. You can take the plant from the soil and replant it with new soil if you detect fertilizer build-up in the soil. You can alternatively saturate the soil with water and let it drain as an option.
Are coffee grounds good for pothos?
If used correctly, coffee grounds can be beneficial to pothos. Because of their high nitrogen content, coffee grinds can significantly aid in the growth and protection of your pothos plant.
What’s the best soil for indoor plants?
If at all feasible, customize your potting soil to the type of plant you’re cultivating. Cactus, succulents, and rosemary, for example, prefer a gritty, well-drained soil with about a third sand content. Seedlings should be raised in a light, moist, soilless mix. African violets and ferns demand humus-rich soil, which can be accomplished by mixing in leaf mold or shredded bark. Many orchids thrive in nothing but fir bark or sphagnum moss.
Peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite are commonly used in indoor potting mixes. These soilless mixes are excellent at absorbing rainfall and avoiding compaction, but they dry up quickly. Because they don’t contain any nutrients, you’ll need to fertilize your plants on a regular basis. A soilless mix has the advantage of being sterile, which means there is no risk of introducing insect or disease concerns.
Many gardeners supplement their indoor growing mix with organic components. Leaf mold, finished compost, composted peat, and rich garden soil are examples of these. A growing medium with 10 to 20% organic matter will not dry up as quickly as a soilless mix, and it will also allow you to add helpful microbes and minerals.
When buying or making your own potting soil, the most important thing to remember is to make sure it’s light enough to allow for appropriate pore space for air, water, and good root growth. Month after month of overhead watering with no earthworms or weather to aerate the soil usually results in an unhealthy, compacted root zone. Your potting soil should contain lots of perlite, vermiculite, or fine sand to ensure that your plants’ roots get the oxygen they require for healthy growth. This will allow water to flow freely and ensure that at least 10% to 20% of the soil is made up of air.
