What Causes Brown Spots On Pothos Leaves?

Brown stains on the leaves of a pothos plant might arise from overwatering, especially if the soil is heavy and compacted. When soil becomes soggy, oxygen cannot reach the roots, causing the plant to become stressed and unable to absorb water and nutrients. As a result, brown stains on the foliage may occur.

Bacterial Leaf Spot

If you notice sunken, wet-looking brown patches on your plant’s leaves, you may have a bacterial leaf spot problem. Bacterial leaf spots are frequent in plants that have been overwatered or kept in humidified or poorly ventilated environments.

Bacterial leaf spots can be quite harmful to your plants. A mild infection can be treated by removing the infected leaves and stems, but a more extensive illness will usually kill your plant. To prevent the disease from spreading to your other houseplants, keep your plant isolated.

Anthracnose

Anthracnose is a fungus that forms black, sunken sores on the leaves and stems of plants. Look for many small, irregular yellow or brown dots on the leaves that slowly enlarge over time to identify it.

Although it is not usually lethal to houseplants, it can rapidly spread and degrade the beauty of your plants. Any infected plants should be quarantined, with all damaged foliage removed and the plant treated with a copper-based fungicide.

Root And Stem Rot

You may have root rot or stem rot if the stem and roots of your plant turn brown or black and feel mushy and spongy. Overwatering and poorly draining soil are the most common causes of rot. Remove the infected roots and replant the plant in new soil. Make sure your container has plenty of drainage holes and that the catch tray is always empty after you’ve watered your plant. These actions may be enough to rescue the plant.

Fungal Leaf Spots

A problem with fungal leaf spots could be indicated by small brown patches with yellow edges. Remove and discard the infected leaves, then treat the plant with neem oil as directed on the container. If the neem oil fails to prevent future infection, the entire plant may need to be destroyed.

Watering Problems

Underwatering can be detected by brown leaf tips or dead leaves, especially if your plant is also drooping. Examine the soil to see if it is entirely dry. If that’s the case, you might have a problem with underwatering.

To begin, give your plant a good, long drink of water. To avoid your plant sitting in moist soil, dump the drip tray once the container has entirely drained. Within a few hours, your plant should wake up.

To avoid this happening again, make sure you understand your plant’s watering requirements. Some plants require damp but not soggy soil, while others require total drying between waterings.

Even indoor houseplants, like outside plants, will go dormant in the winter and require less water. However, when the amount of daylight hours increases in the spring, your plants’ thirst for water will increase. Watering concerns might arise as a result of the shift in water requirements as the seasons change.

How do you fix brown spots on pothos?

Shade or partial shade is preferred for golden pothos. When exposed to direct sunlight, it burns readily and may develop brown spots as a result of the sunburn. Spots may appear on the leaves if the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit or if they come into contact with a chilly window pane. The problem is usually solved by removing the leaf and transferring the plant to better lighting or away from chilly air sources.

What does an overwatered pothos look like?

Their leaves will also feel soft and floppy, and you may notice brown stains or water blisters on them. If you give your plants more water than they can use, the water will become stagnant, and your plant may begin to stink. Excess water will also fill the air pockets in the soil with molecules. This reduces the amount of oxygen available to your plant’s roots, causing your pothos to suffocate. The roots that have been deprived of oxygen will eventually die and decompose. Root rot develops in this manner.

Will leaf spot go away?

Leaf spot and melting-out are common names for a group of lawn diseases caused by fungi from the same family. Helminthosporium (such a mouthful!) is a genus that contains a significant number of disease-causing organisms. The grass diseases in this family are similar in that they give your lawn a one-two punch by causing leaf spot in the spring and fall and then switching gears into a sheath and root rot phase during the summer heat.

When Can You Expect To See Spots?

In and on sick turf tissue, the lawn disease fungi survive the winter as spores (fungus seeds) and mycelium (fungus threads). The fungus begins to grow and disperse its spores via wind and water when spring temperatures reach 55 to 60 degrees and there is a lot of moisture from rain or dew. The sickness enters the second phase of melting out when the temperature warms.

Damage Symptoms:

Individual grass blades will have high numbers of lesions (or infection marks) that look like a cigarette burn, a dark circle with a tan spot in the center, during the leaf spot phase of this lawn disease (spring or fall). The grass takes on a brown undertone at this stage of the leaf spot lawn disease, making it appear underfed or dried out. While leaf spot may not cause major turf damage during this phase, it does prepare the stage for the far more dangerous melting-out phase.

During hot, dry weather, the melting-out phase occurs, causing big irregular regions to seem dried out. During the melting out phase, there may not be any obvious lawn disease signs because the affected regions may resemble the effects of dry weather or insect damage.

Early Action Needed: Don’t Snooze, You Might Lose

The way the turf is watered, fed, and mowed, as with all lawn illnesses, makes a tremendous effect. It’s best to make sure the grass doesn’t stay wet or dry for long periods of time.

Water only once a week and wet the soil to a depth of six inches. Water early in the morning so that the grass does not stay wet for long. With core aeration, open up the area surrounding the grass crowns (where the plant passes through the thatch and into the soil). Fertilizing and aerating your grass on a regular basis will help avoid disease. The cuttings should be collected in the spring and fall (leaf spot stage) to assist prevent disease spread.

If lawn treatment is required, it should be started as soon as possible. Fungicide sprays in the spring and early summer can be useful, but once the melting-out period occurs, there is little that can be done to reverse lawn disease.

Remember:

  • Leaf spot makes the grass look ill, but it causes no long-term damage. It does, however, create the groundwork for the disease’s more serious melting-out phase.
  • Water early in the morning to allow the turf to dry fast. This helps to keep leaf spot spores from spreading.
  • Melting out is a common occurrence in hot weather, and it’s easy to confuse it with drought stress or insect damage.
  • Aeration and thatch control are important for keeping turf crowns open and reducing disease activity.
