How To Train Pothos?

Brooklyn, on the other side of the pond, is home to a massive pothos. ” It’s been with me for seven years, and when it first came home, it was only around 36 inches tall. “The longest branch now extends more than 50 feet,” says Wallpaper Projects co-founder David Jimenez.

He first got his specimen, a “rescue” from the streets of Chinatown, to undulate overhead by tying loops of red string to his sprinkler pipes. “I strung a system of strings that spreads across virtually the entire ceiling at the apartment, and it allows me the freedom to keep continuing for a lot more years, I hope,” he says, explaining that the plant quickly outgrew those confines.

“Every six months or so, the tendrils become adjusted as we start bumping into them or they get in the way of us watching TV,” Jimenez continues. Once a week, he removes any dry leaves, and once a year, he feeds with Houseplants Alive!, an all-natural fertilizer available from the Gardens Alive! website.

“David is a plant whisperer,” Amanda Dandeneau, his business and life partner, adds. To grow a monster pothos, though, you don’t need any special powers or even a green thumb. Here’s what you need to know about caring for and training one:

Fertilize once a year at the very least to keep the soil’s natural balance and texture.

Training: Because a pothos won’t climb on its own, guide its tendrils along a wall or ceiling with a removable support system. String, command hooks, and metal picture hangers all work well.

Do pothos like to climb or hang?

Pothos do not ascend until it is absolutely necessary. There’s no need for the vines to climb indoors if they’re on a shelf or the top of a bookcase. Pothos, on the other hand, do what comes naturally to them: they trail. This is why these plants are known as trailing vines.

How do you train a pothos up a pole?

Simply put the pole in the center of the dirt and connect the plant to the pole at a few points on the stem with gardening wire or twine to train the plant. If your plant’s stems are flexible, you can coil it loosely around the pole as it develops, securing the stems with wire or thread. Leave the rest to the plant. If your plant is a fast growth, ensure sure the pole is at least twice as tall as your plant.

Where should I place my pothos?

They thrive in both bright, indirect light and low light, and can be cultivated in dry soil or in water-filled vases. They do almost as well in nutrient-poor soil as they do in nutrient-rich soil. Because they can endure low light, pothos plants are an excellent addition to your bathroom or office.

Should pothos be staked?

Alternatively, several garden centers and specialty craft stores provide fern bark or moss-based climbing polls specifically created for climbing plants. These stakes can be really useful for growing climbers, but bear in mind that keeping the pole moist and encouraging the plant to hook onto the stake will require additional hydration. This is especially true for sphagnum moss poles, since it dries very quickly.

Propagation

It’s really simple to propagate a Pothos. I’ve always had fantastic success propagating mine in water. Roots emerge from the nodes of the stems, so they’re already rooted for you.

Remove enough leaves from the stems (typically 1-4 depending on the length of the cuttings) to allow them to be submerged in water. Keep the leaves out of the water as much as possible. Fill your glass or jar halfway with water to cover two or three nodes. Maintain this level of water and change it out as needed. In no time, more roots will appear!

I’ve maintained my Pothos stem cuttings in water for up to 8 months and they’ve looked great. I’ve heard they can survive for a long time in water and even develop.

Pests

My Pothos had mealybugs when I lived in Santa Barbara. Early on, I noticed them and took action.

Pothos was plagued with spider mites and scale on commercial accounts. Mealybugs, spider mites, and scale have all had posts written about them so you can identify them and cure them.

Pests can quickly spread from houseplant to houseplant and reproduce rapidly, so get them under control as soon as you notice them.

The Pothos plant is a notably tough specimen that can flourish even in the most inhospitable conditions. It does, however, require frequent water, sun or artificial light, sufficient nourishment, and air circulation, just like any other plant. Pothos plants that are stunted may be suffering from a variety of problems, both cultural and pest-related. Even a beginner gardener can save the plant if the most prevalent causes are addressed.

Pothos plants have waxy, heart-shaped leaves that are glossy green or variegated. The growth of young Pothos leaves differs slightly from that of adult leaves. These smooth juvenile leaves are several inches (8 cm) long and smooth. Mature leaves can grow up to 3 feet (91 cm) long and form oval or heart shapes with holes in the midrib.

Although most indoor plants do not produce leaves of that size, leaves develop in a similar manner. Pothos plants with foliar issues have limited leaf growth, poor color, and are frequently wilted. The plant’s overall health may be harmed, and it may be unable to develop new growth. Foliar productivity is usually enhanced by adequate light and fertilizer.

Pothos Problems with Water

Pothos plants that are stunted are commonly caused by a lack of water. These tropical plants prefer filtered light, high humidity, and temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (21-32 C.). Plant growth is slowed under temperatures that are higher or lower than those listed.

Do pothos like to be misted?

Pothos vines can grow up to 70 feet in the wild, but they can also be trained to climb up surfaces rather than trails! The increased humidity maintains the foliage at its best and helps the vines connect to a support or trellis by promoting aerial root growth.

Will pothos climb a moss pole?

Now for the fun part: we’re going to look at how you can use a moss pole to assist your plant grow. The manner you assist your plant is somewhat dependent on the plant itself. If you have a Philodendron with thin vines, you’ll need a means to keep the vines on the moss pole carefully. However, if you have a Monstera with thick stems, all you have to do is keep the stems as close to the moss pole as possible.

You can begin using a moss pole for your houseplant with these supplies.

The purpose of utilizing a moss pole with a houseplant is to ensure that the plant is in contact with the moss pole.

The velcro strips can be used to “tie” your plant to the moss pole in any way that you like.

If you’re using a plant with thin vines, such as the Philodendron, take careful when positioning it against the moss pole.

Because the vines are easily destroyed, don’t tie them too firmly to the moss pole.

You’ll need to keep tying your plant to the moss pole as it grows.

You keep directing the plant along the moss pole for as long as you choose.

Your houseplant will eventually learn to grow against the moss pole on its own, particularly if it has air roots.

The Philodendron and Pothos will begin to develop “roots” that they will utilize to attach themselves to objects such as the moss pole.

These plants will be able to figure out where and how to develop on their own, so you won’t have to lead them for very long.

Because the Monstera develops more slowly, you’ll have to instruct it to climb upwards for a little longer.

You won’t get much work out of the Monstera after it starts to grow around the moss pole.

How do you get big leaves on pothos?

Do you have any idea why pothos plants have such huge leaves as they climb? Pothos climb trees in their natural habitat to get more indirect sunlight and create massive foliage by absorbing more nutrients from the sun.

To encourage climbing, purchase a stake, pole, support, or trellis. When the plant outgrows the support, it will fall down, and the subsequent leaves will be smaller than the ones on the support.

Trim the drooping sections or extend the support at this point to guarantee that the plant continues to grow enormous leaves.

You can even teach the plant to climb a neighboring tree, rope, large moss stick, or pole, and it will reward you with massive leaves! One of the most important secrets to growing enormous pothos leaves is the climbing pothos plant.

Pothos may produce Monstera-like lobes with maturity if given enough indirect light.

Feeding Pothos

Pothos should be fertilized once every 4-8 weeks using a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at 1/2 or 1/4 strength. To induce the growth of aerial roots that adhere to the surrounding wall or pole and help create bigger leaves, dilute a few drops of rooting hormone in water and spray it on the stems.

How do you train plants to climb?

Your dog learned to walk on a leash, your cat learned to use a litterbox, and your parrot learned to curse like a sailor. Are you looking for a new challenge? Your houseplants should be trained.

Wire hoops, topiary forms, and trellises can all be purchased ready-made. Bamboo stakes can also be used to create a trellis. Take a walk over to your nearest tree and grab some twigs for a rustic effect. Tie them together with jute or use adhesive to make a trellis. Wind the stems around the support after potting the plant. To keep the stems in place, use plant ties (or twist ties if you don’t have time to go to the plant store).

Pothos and philodendrons, which have aerial roots, should be trained up a moss pole. Many varieties of philodendrons produce larger leaves when trained on a moss pole than when grown in a normal pot, in addition to adding visual interest. You can either buy ready-made moss poles or create your own. Roll wire mesh into a tube and bind it with plant ties to form a moss pole. Cut a couple of bamboo stakes to the diameter of the pot and pierce them in an X through the netting. In the pot, wedge the pole upright. Fill the pot halfway with dirt, then stuff the pole with sphagnum moss. Wires twisted into a hairpin shape are used to attach the vines to the moss pole. (Is there no wire? Paperclips are a good option.) Roots will develop into the pole if it is misted daily.

Climbing plants can be trained to climb up a wall, over a mantel, or around a window. String between nails on the wall, then use plant ties to secure plant stems.
