Placing the cut ends of your stems in water is the initial method of propagating pothos. For roots pothos, use an old glass or jelly jar. Place the pothos cuttings jar in a location that receives plenty of light but not direct sunshine. You can plant the cuttings in soil and maintain them like any other houseplant around a month after the roots appear. However, the longer pothos cuttings are submerged in water, the more difficult it is for them to adapt to soil. Pothos cuttings that have begun to root should be transplanted as soon as possible.
The recommended way of propagating a pothos starts with the same steps as the first. Remove the first leaf above the cut ends from the pothos cuttings. Rooting hormone should be applied to the cut end. Make sure the initial set of root nodes is covered. Set the cuttings in a half-peat moss, half-perlite or sand potting mix. Keep your roots pothos away of direct sunlight and the soil moist. After one month, the roots should have developed, and the new plants should be ready in two or three months.
Can you put pothos cuttings directly into soil?
Pothos plant propagation can be done in either water or soil, but once started, the plant has a hard time transitioning to another media. If you put the cutting in water, the plant should stay in the water as it grows. The same can be said for a cutting that has been propagated in the soil.
How many pothos cuttings should I put in a pot?
- By cutting just below a leaf node, snip off approximately 6″ inch long portions from healthy stems (the tiny brown bumps or nubs on stems).
- To take the cuttings, use pruning shears or a sharp, clean knife, and make sure each one has at least two nodes and four leaves.
- Place the jar on a window sill or in a location with bright but indirect light.
Transferring Rooted Pothos Cuttings from Water to Soil
Before transplanting the cuttings, let them grow in the water for about four weeks after they begin to establish roots.
Fill containers (3-4 cuttings per pot) with potting mix and softly moisten the soil to transfer golden pothos cuttings from water to soil.
Move the cuttings to the pots with care, since you don’t want to break or hurt the delicate young roots.
Adding a couple of inches of any soil to the base of the pots before placing the cuttings in them is an excellent technique to avoid the new roots from being injured.
While it is possible to move pothos cuttings to the soil after roots them in water, it is not advised.
When cuttings that have been rooted in water are left in the water, they will grow more easily and prosper.
Propagating Pothos Cuttings in Soil
Root the cuttings in the soil as well if you want to avoid the extra step of transferring cuttings from water to soil or simply prefer to grow pothos in water for whatever reason.
- Using pruning shears or a sharp and clean knife, cut around 6″ inch long pothos cuttings from mature and healthy stems.
- Make sure the cuttings have at least four nodes and stems by cutting just below a node.
- Dip the cut ends of the stems in a rooting hormone and coat them lightly up to the first set of root nodes.
- Plant the cuttings in damp potting soil (equal parts peat and perlite or sand) in pots (remember to water the potting mix before inserting cuttings).
- Make sure to plant Pothos plant cuttings a little deeper so the first root node at the end of the stem is in the soil when planting.
- Allow the cuttings to establish new roots for 8 to 12 weeks in their original pots before transplanting them to larger pots filled with standard (all-purpose) potting mix.
How do you transplant pothos from water to soil?
Make sure the roots are completely covered in dirt. It’s now complete! You can take proper care of your plant. As previously stated, water it once a week and fertilize the soil once a month.
- In the pot, lay the roots and cover them with soil. Allow 1 inch of space at the top of the pot.
Now that the transferring is complete, set the plant in a bright, indirect light source. You’re now prepared to care after this gem for the next 5-10 years!
Can pothos stay in water forever?
So, how long does Pothos last in the water? Pothos vines can thrive in water if they are properly cared for. A pothos plant can survive for years, so as long as you follow a few simple guidelines to provide nutrient-rich water and an appropriate climate, your water-growing pothos should thrive.
Because water depletes oxygen, you’ll need to refill the water for your pothos every one to two weeks, as well as apply a liquid fertilizer to ensure that the water contains enough nutrients for strong development. Water, as we all know, contains the possibility for algal growth. You’ll almost certainly grow your pothos in a glass container (because, let’s be honest, seeing the roots is quite cool).
Choosing an opaque container may slow the spread of algae, but in any case, you’ll want to remove the plant and clean the container as soon as you notice any signs of algae growth.
When should I pot my propagated pothos?
Step 3: After the roots have emerged, put your cuttings in a lightly damp potting mix and care for them as usual. However, because pothos plants thrive in the medium in which they were rooted, keeping your plant in water may help it thrive more easily.
Can I pot different types of pothos together?
Is it possible to mix and match pothos varieties? Different varieties of pothos can be planted together as long as they have the same general care requirements, which most do. That would make a great planter arrangement!
Is it better to propagate in water or soil?

Many plants are best grown in potting soil, although some can also be propagated in water. This is due to the fact that they have developed in an environment that permits them to do so. Most Aroid plants, including pothos, philodendrons, monsteras, and ZZ plants, may be propagated in water. Because these plants descended from an ancestor that lived in marshes, the ability to adjust to flooding while still growing was critical to their survival. As a result, that ancestor’s descendants are able to grow in water as well. They are still terrestrial plants, though, and will flourish best if planted in soil over time. Look for a little brown root node just below the leaf or stem/vine intersection on a mature vine. Pothos propagation relies on these small bumps. Cut a couple inches of healthy stem just before a node and include a node or two with the cutting, as here is where the new roots will emerge.
Remove any leaves that are too close to the node, particularly those that may become immersed in water when you place your cutting into your glass vessel.

The most difficult step, arguably: patience! On a weekly basis, check root growth from the node. When necessary, replace the water with new, tepid water. Replace the water every few days or simply top off the vessel with fresh water when it appears to be running lowas long as there is no murkiness or fungal forming. If the water is muddy, we recommend replenishing it to ensure the root system’s health.
We recommend waiting until the root is at least 1 inch long or longer before transplanting your plant cuttings from the glass vessel into a planter using potting mix. This should take 4-6 weeks to complete. Saturate the potting mix with room temperature water and place the cutting in bright indirect light once the roots have been potted. It is entirely possible to keep your plant cuttings growing in water indefinitely. A word of caution: the longer your plant cutting lies in water, the worse it will likely get. Why? Because water is devoid of nutrients, it can raise the risk of fungal diseases. During the spring and summer growing seasons, you can assist combat this by changing the water and adding a small amount of fertilizer every month or so.
