Pothos is a great choice for beginners because it is so easy to grow. It thrives in filtered light, high humidity, and temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but it can withstand a wide range of circumstances. Small new growth is one of the most visible indicators of a salt build-up in your pot, which can cause a variety of problems for your plant (they draw water out of the roots).

Fortunately, this is a simple repair! When it’s time to water, instead of just giving the plant its typical hydration, you’ll want to drain your pot of accumulated salts. Here’s how to do it:

1 – Remove any salt crust that has formed manually, taking care not to remove more than 1/4 inch of soil.

2 – Slowly pour a considerable amount of water into your pot, ensuring that it is completely saturated. Slowing down ensures that it is absorbed rather than simply pouring down the edges of the pot.

3 – Wait a few moments until you notice water draining from the pot’s bottom. Then add more water to completely flush the pot. Double the volume of the pot with water. Continue to pour water through the hole until the soil is saturated multiple times.

It’s time to repot your plant with fresh soil if your container doesn’t have any drainage or if you see a lot of salt build-up.

To prevent accumulation, you should leach all of your pots every 4-6 months. When watering, don’t let the pots sit in too much water; they’ll merely soak up the salts again, exacerbating the problem.

The plants you buy at the nursery have spent the most of their lives in a high-light greenhouse. It’s unusual that our homes in dark, dreary Portland get the amount of light they need to bloom to their full potential. As a result, new growth is generally tiny and immature. This is especially prevalent in plants that have a lot of distinction between mature and immature leaves, such as Monstera deliciosa, which needs a lot of light to get the “split” and “holes” in huge leaves.
