Pothos are slow to moderate growers. The growth rate will be slower if it is kept in low light. In their natural habitats, they may climb up to 60 feet in trees. As a result, they’re considered invasive and difficult to eradicate, earning the nickname “Devil’s Ivy.” We don’t have to worry about this in our homes, thankfully!
Every two or three years, I repot my Pothos. The roots get more widespread as the routes become longer. I could see the roots through the drain holes of my two grow pots, but they hadn’t yet started to burst out.
At the bottom of the root ball, the roots are all bunched up. Pothos don’t mind being slightly root bound, but a fresh new mix and a larger container will make them more happier.
Do pothos like crowded roots?
So you know what I’m talking about: certain plants want to be snug in their pots and will suffer if they’re put in a pot that’s too big:
Hoyas are often epiphytes that prefer to dry out between waterings. Both of these qualities indicate that plants won’t need repotting until their roots wrap around the inside of the pot or the container requires more frequent watering than usual.
Peace lilies prefer to be kept cozy in their pots, which I suppose is because they prefer to be kept moist but not overwatered. They would quickly develop root rot if they had too much excess soil.
For the same reason as hoya, philodendron, epipremnum, and pothos are content to be snug in their pots. Because they grow on trees, they require a chunky, well-draining soil to prevent root rot.
If you can only give them house plant potting soil, make sure they don’t have too much extra space in their container because root rot is something we don’t want (at this point).
Because succulents and cacti have small root systems, they rarely require repotting. I wouldn’t recommend repotting them till you see roots emerging from the nursery pot’s bottom.
Before watering succulents, make sure the soil is completely dry. Some experts even use a blowdryer to dry the soil so that the plants don’t acquire root rot.
Allowing your plants to be a little tight in their pots will aid in the drying of the soil before rot sets in.
How do I know if my pothos is root bound?
Although pothos, like philodendrons, have aerial roots, a fresh growth of roots crawling through the dirt could indicate that the available soil inside the pot is already too full of roots to accommodate any more.
As the roots develop through the top layer of soil, you’ll notice cracking and flakiness on the soil surface. In addition, if you irrigate and the topsoil dries out too quickly, it’s time to remove the pothos to avoid root rot.
Leaf discoloration and wilting
The yellowing or browning of leaves is another indicator of root bound houseplants. One symptom of moisture issues is yellow pothos leaves, which can be caused by either underwatering or overwatering. This type of foliage darkening can also be caused by pothos becoming root-bound, especially on the leaves at the plant’s base. Root-bound pothos leaves may also appear limp and begin to droop.
When should I repot pothos?
- We recommend repotting smaller desktop plants every 12-18 months. To allow for growth, use a potting vessel that is 1″- 2″ bigger in diameter. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the previous one to avoid drowning the plant’s roots. Do pothos like shallow pots?
Because pothos are climbing plants, they will not grow to be very tall, but rather will grow down. A shallow pot allows your Pothos to grow thicker, keeping the vines from becoming too long or lanky, and it will appear much fuller and healthier.
What kind of pots do pothos like?
- Select a container with a drainage hole in the bottom. Pothos plants dislike sitting in moist soil because they decay quickly.
- Pothos should be planted in a well-draining potting mix (or a soilless mix). To improve the drainage capacity of your potting mix, add a few handfuls of perlite or coco coir if you have it on hand.
- Pothos looks great in a hanging basket with the vines showing off, or in a standard pot on a plant stand. Although their aerial rootswhich they employ to attach themselves to surfaces such as trees or other vertical structuresmay peel paint, they can be permitted to grow up walls.
Do pothos like big or small pots?
The size of the pot is determined by the size of the root ball. Pothos rarely has to be repotted and can survive in a smaller container, which helps to keep the plant from getting too big. In general, a new pot should not be larger than the old pot or the root ball by more than 2 inches. The plant will have enough area to grow in a pot with a depth of 10 inches. If the roots start to clog the drainage holes or the plant starts to lift from the soil, it’s time to relocate it to a bigger container. The greatest time to repot is in the spring, when the plants are actively growing.
Which houseplants like to be root bound?
When you feel your house plant is root bound, your initial instinct may be to repot it into a larger pot to remedy the condition. You could even go the extra mile and chop away part of the rooting. However, you might be shocked to learn that some plants thrive when they are confined to their roots. Peace lily, spider plant, African violets, aloe vera, umbrella tree, ficus, agapanthus, asparagus fern, spider lily, Christmas cactus, jade plant, snake plant, and Boson fern are among the plants that prefer to be root bound.
Should you break up the roots when planting?
With many woody and herbaceous ornamentals, improper planting is a prevalent issue. Improper planting can cause difficulties with azaleas, boxwoods, hollies, and junipers, but it can happen to any plant. Poor growth is a common symptom, and affected plants are often “off-color” and unhealthy-looking, with low vigor. Due to environmental stressors caused by inadequate planting, plants may experience branch dieback and eventually die.
Poor soil and planting hole preparation, inability to add organic amendments, and/or failure to break up the root ball can all lead to improper planting. Planting holes should be twice the width of the root ball and eight inches deep. Despite the fact that the hole is excavated deeper than the root ball, the plant should not be planted too deeply. Backfill the root ball with clod-free soil until the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding ground. Azaleas should be planted with the top of the root ball slightly above ground level in the planting hole.
Peat moss, top soil, nature’s assistant, pine bark, and other organic soil additives may help to enhance the quality of extremely sandy or clayey soils. Soil amendments, on the other hand, should always be evenly mixed into the planting area/site rather than placed directly into the planting hole. Because excessive moisture is trapped near the roots by the uneven or irregular layers of soil texture, not mixing soil amendments into the native soil usually results in poor root growth and/or root rots.
Before placing the plant in the hole, break up the root ball with your hands or a knife to encourage root growth into the surrounding soil. Failure to do so frequently results in the plant remaining root-bound (most plants are to some degree when they are purchased in containers). Without penetrating the surrounding soil, the roots grow inward, upward, or around the root ball. (See the image above.) A similar effect can be achieved by digging a hole just big enough for the root ball. When dying plants that have been in the ground for several years are removed, their root systems are sometimes retained in the pot’s original shape.
Improper planting causes stress in the plant, making it more vulnerable to disease and pest assault. Plants that have been weakened by incorrect planting, illness, or insect assault are more likely to die when exposed to extreme weather conditions. Improperly planted plants are frequently too wounded or root-bound to save, so it’s preferable to start over. If replanting is to be done appropriately, it should be done in the early spring or late fall.
Can root bound plants recover?
Some of the plants you’ll find in the garden center or nursery will be rootbound when you buy them. What does it mean for a plant tobe rootbound?

When you take a rootbound plant out of its container, the roots and dirt tend to come out in one thick wada congested network of roots that sticks together. You may even see the roots snaking out of the pot’s drainage holes, or the roots may have crawled back up the container walls and be visible on the soil surface in the case of highly rootbound plants.
How can you tell if a plant isrootbound?
Because a rootbound plant can exhibit the same visual signs as a plant that hasn’t received enough water, diagnosing it as rootbound without lifting it out of the container can be challenging. Stunted growth, rapid withering, and yellowing or brown leaves are some of the warning signs (especially toward the base of the plant). The dense roots may cause a container to be distorted or fractured in severe circumstances.
Check the underside of the pot while choosing plants, shrubs, or trees at the garden center to make sure roots aren’t visible protruding through the drainage holes. To inspect the root structure and avoid bringing home a rootbound plant, carefully slide the plant up and out of the pot. The nursery personnel will not mind if you check for rootbinding on plants as long as you do so properly and without causing damage. Rootbinding has happened if roots wrap over the sides of the container in any way, yet if there is plenty of soil visible, the plant may simply be minimally rootbound.
What happens when a plant isrootbound?
If you don’t know any better, you might believe that a rootbound plant is an excellent choice because of its large root system. After all, a plant’s network of roots aids in the extraction of water and nutrients from the soil, which are used to nourish and grow the plant. In reality, the reverse is true. When you’ve found a rootbound plant, the following step is to relocate it to a larger container. Not only will transplanting a rootbound plant into a new environment allow it to stretch out and grow its root network, but a fresh batch of potting soil will also offer the plant with much-needed nutrition.
After removing the rootbound plant from its container, gently disentangle the roots with your fingers to allow them to breathe. When the root ball is loosed and the system branches out, the roots are encouraged to continue extending into new territory once they’ve been planted in their new habitat. Soaking the plant overnight in water softens the roots and makes them easier to separate.
If the roots are too closely grouped to be untangled by hand, you’ll need to get the tools out. Slice a few incisions into the root ball with a clean, sharp knife or a gardening trowel. Make a few incisions on the root ball’s sides, then a deep X shape on the bottom. This method will provide the roots with the necessary opening to break free from the tangle and into fresh soil. Don’t worry about damaging the plant by cutting into the roots. On the contrary, some gardeners employ this method whenever they rehome a plant in order to encourage the roots to continue to expand their range.
When you’re through cutting, fill the container with enough potting soil so that when you add the plant, the stem and roots meet approximately one inch from the top of the pot. Then, on top of the soil, place the plant, filling in the gaps around the roots with more potting mix. Once the plant has been repotted, give it plenty of water. Add extra dirt if the earth falls to a lower level after the plant has been watered. Keep the plant well watered for a few weeks after transplanting to ensure that it is not upset by the change. When repotting a rootbound plant, make careful to use fresh soil, as the dirt in the container throughout the plant’s growth will have been depleted of its nutrients.
How do you prune roots beforetransplanting?
If no larger pots are availableor if their current home is a container you particularly enjoy and want to keep the plant in ityou might prefer to utilize root pruning instead of totally repotting a rootbound plant. Cut out both large and little roots, and don’t be afraid to use some force. The plant will not be harmed, and it will be encouraged to spread its roots and develop stronger. After you’ve finished trimming, loosen the root ball around the edges and at the bottom using a fork, stick, or prongedcultivator to allow the roots to breathe.

Should I mist my pothos?
