Can pothos stay in water forever?
So, how long does Pothos last in the water? Pothos vines can thrive in water if they are properly cared for. A pothos plant can survive for years, so as long as you follow a few simple guidelines to provide nutrient-rich water and an appropriate climate, your water-growing pothos should thrive.
Because water depletes oxygen, you’ll need to refill the water for your pothos every one to two weeks, as well as apply a liquid fertilizer to ensure that the water contains enough nutrients for strong development. Water, as we all know, contains the possibility for algal growth. You’ll almost certainly grow your pothos in a glass container (because, let’s be honest, seeing the roots is quite cool).
Choosing an opaque container may slow the spread of algae, but in any case, you’ll want to remove the plant and clean the container as soon as you notice any signs of algae growth.
Select a glass jar, vase, or bottle.
These can be found at thrift stores for a very low price, such as Goodwill. It’s preferable to start with clear ones so you can see the roots sprout. After that, choose a vase with a darker hue to block out some light and prevent the spread of algae; otherwise, you’ll be cleaning algae rather frequently.
Do pothos grow better in water or soil?

Pothos is a tropical understory plant that requires warm temperatures and a shady to largely shady setting, such as a site with little dappled morning sun. Pothos plants thrive in temperatures ranging from 70 to 90 degrees F (21-32 degrees C) with heavy humidity.
Why is my pothos not growing?
The Pothos plant is a notably tough specimen that can flourish even in the most inhospitable conditions. It does, however, require frequent water, sun or artificial light, sufficient nourishment, and air circulation, just like any other plant. Pothos plants that are stunted may be suffering from a variety of problems, both cultural and pest-related. Even a beginner gardener can save the plant if the most prevalent causes are addressed.
Pothos plants have waxy, heart-shaped leaves that are glossy green or variegated. The growth of young Pothos leaves differs slightly from that of adult leaves. These smooth juvenile leaves are several inches (8 cm) long and smooth. Mature leaves can grow up to 3 feet (91 cm) long and form oval or heart shapes with holes in the midrib.
Although most indoor plants do not produce leaves of that size, leaves develop in a similar manner. Pothos plants with foliar issues have limited leaf growth, poor color, and are frequently wilted. The plant’s overall health may be harmed, and it may be unable to develop new growth. Foliar productivity is usually enhanced by adequate light and fertilizer.
Pothos Problems with Water
Pothos plants that are stunted are commonly caused by a lack of water. These tropical plants prefer filtered light, high humidity, and temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (21-32 C.). Plant growth is slowed under temperatures that are higher or lower than those listed.
How long does it take pothos to root in water?
Let’s get back to our beloved pothos plants now that you know what plant propagation is.
Take a healthy vine avoid brown or yellowing leaves and cut it directly below a node to grow pothos plants in water. Make sure the stem you choose has at least three nodes. Remove all of the leaves that are beneath the node. This is necessary to avoid the leaves decaying underwater and suffocating the young roots.
You’ll notice small brown bumps growing along the vine near each node on your pothos cutting. When you submerge your pothos vine in water, aerial roots will begin to sprout.
Place your pothos cuttings in a vase filled with clean water, making sure that at least one or two nodes are submerged. Additionally, choose a vine cutting with at least two leaves to facilitate rapid growth.
In your home, place the vase in indirect sunlight. After 7-14 days, new roots will develop from the nodes that have been buried in water. Once the plant roots are an inch or two long, you can either put the cutting in soil or let it grow in water only.
Choose a high-quality liquid fertilizer to feed your plant if you opt to let it grow in water. Fertilize your pothos plant every 4 to 6 weeks if it’s growing in water.
The amount of fertilizer you use will depend on the directions on the fertilizer package as well as the size of your plant and jar. However, as a general rule, no more than a few drops should be used. When it comes to growing plants in jars of water, it’s always preferable to under fertilize than to over fertilize. You don’t want algae to grow, which is caused by nutrients and sunlight.
Place your pothos in front of a north-facing window and cover it with shades to keep the sun out. Also, be sure to change the water every two weeks to keep your plant healthy.
Why are pothos dying in water?

Ensure that all dirt and fertilizer on the roots are fully washed away so that your aquarium’s water chemistry is not harmed.
Separate your pothos into individual plantlets with 2 to 4 leaves each and wash the roots carefully to eliminate any dirt or fertilizer.
If you have plant-eating fish, keep the pothos in a hang-on-back filter out of the way. Place it far away from the filter’s motor compartment so that the roots do not grow into the impeller and block it. If your fish aren’t afraid of the pothos, you can just stick the plant’s roots in the tank and let the leaves grow out of the water. The plant should be held in place by the aquarium lid so that it does not fall in.
Remove the cover from the hang-on-back filter and “plant” the pothos as far away from the motor as possible. If necessary, trim the roots in the future.
The pothos will eventually grow into a long vine that you can train to climb along a wall or along some shelving. Its long, stringy roots will form a lovely jungle for your fish to swim in, and you can always trim them back if they become too dense. Furthermore, you can easily take off a stem or leaf and reproduce it in future aquariums. Pothos may be the greatest filtration you can get for less than $5, thanks to its incredible ability to keep nitrate levels and algae development low.

How do you train a pothos to climb?
Brooklyn, on the other side of the pond, is home to a massive pothos. ” It’s been with me for seven years, and when it first came home, it was only around 36 inches tall. “The longest branch now extends more than 50 feet,” says Wallpaper Projects co-founder David Jimenez.
He first got his specimen, a “rescue” from the streets of Chinatown, to undulate overhead by tying loops of red string to his sprinkler pipes. “I strung a system of strings that spreads across virtually the entire ceiling at the apartment, and it allows me the freedom to keep continuing for a lot more years, I hope,” he says, explaining that the plant quickly outgrew those confines.
“Every six months or so, the tendrils become adjusted as we start bumping into them or they get in the way of us watching TV,” Jimenez continues. Once a week, he removes any dry leaves, and once a year, he feeds with Houseplants Alive!, an all-natural fertilizer available from the Gardens Alive! website.
