Be aware that none of the available insecticides will likely provide complete control of all individuals, and that you will need to monitor and treat again as needed. When infestations become severe, consider discarding houseplants rather than repeatedly treating them with insecticides. On outdoor plants, cultural practices and biological control should be adequate for suppressing mealybugs in most situations.

My indoor plants have developed a “fungus” that has spread from one to the others. I think it’s causing the plants to die. It is a white fuzz that is touchably sticky. I can whip it off the leaves, and it immediately returns. One of my plants died, and another is about to die. It weighs down the leaves on my ponytail plant as well. I believe mealybugs are the source of the issue you are experiencing with your Ponytail Palm and other indoor plants. One of the few issues that Ponytail Palms face is mealybugs. They are tiny insects that, when not covered in a thick layer of white, waxy “cotton,” resemble tiny, flattened roly-polies or pillbugs. They are protected from predators by the waxy covering that they secrete. By wiping them with cotton swabs dipped in rubbing alcohol, mealybugs can be exterminated. Since they are good at locating places to hide, it can take more than one treatment to get them all.
