If you’ve read my blog or followed me on Instagram, you already know how much I love taxonomy and plant identification! One of the most common mistakes I see new plant parents make is confusing a heart leaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium) with a pothos (Philodendron hederaceum var. oxycardium) (Epipremnum aureum). Although they appear to be similar at first glance, a deeper examination reveals a world of differences! It’s also true that the two plants require similar care, albeit I believe the philodendron is less drought tolerant and requires more intense light to thrive. Nonetheless, I wanted to go over the distinctions and similarities so you can be sure of your plant identification. In a series of “Know Your Plants” postings, expect more!
Let’s start with a comparison of the philodendron and the pothos: Both P. hederaceum var. oxycardium and E. aureum belong to the Araceae family and are natural climbers. They will naturally grow up the sides of trees and other plants, buildings, telephone poles, and anything else they can cling to and go upwards on with their aerial roots. Even though many people give them trellises or moss poles to climb, they’re frequently presented in hanging baskets and as trailing plants in the home. Except for variegated and neon cultivars, both the philodendron and the pothos have green, glossy leaves with a similar heart shape and grow to about the same size in the home (typically around the size of an adult’s palm). The similarities end there, so let’s look at how to tell the difference between these two popular houseplants!
Shape and Texture
Both pothos and vining philodendron have heart-shaped leaves, although philodendron leaves are often broader. A philodendron leaf will also have a more dramatic curve where the leaf joins to the stem, called the petiole, similar to the top of a heart.
Pothos has thicker, waxier leaves than heart leaf philodendron in general.
Petioles
The petioles are little stems that connect the leaves to the plant’s main stem. The petiole of a philodendron is spherical, whereas the petiole of a pothos is depressed and curled inwards, similar to the shape of a celery stalk.
Aerial Roots
Aerial roots will sprout on both philodendron and pothos plants, allowing them to climb and vine. Pothos aerial roots, on the other hand, are thick, and there will only be one per node (where the leaf and petiole attach to the stem). Heartleaf philodendron aerial roots, on the other hand, are thinner, with two or more at each node.
New Growth
The way new leaves grow is the final way we’ll distinguish between pothos and heartleaf philodendron today. A fresh pothos leaf is tightly curled and unfurls slowly over time, showing a lighter version of a mature leaf that will deepen with age.
New philodendron leaves, on the other hand, will have sheaths called cataphylls around them. The cataphylls will dry up and fall off once the leaves have opened and grown. A baby philodendron leaf has a pinkish or yellowish hue to it, and as it matures, it becomes more green.
How do you identify a philodendron?
Philodendron foliage is normally green, but it can also be coppery, crimson, or purplish; parallel leaf veins are usually green, but they can also be red or white. The shape, size, and texture of the leaves vary greatly depending on the plant’s species and maturity. The berry is white to orange in color. The differences between the juvenile and adult phases make it nearly hard to distinguish between distinct kinds of tiny plants.
What does philodendron look like?
I’m going to give out a few more qualities to look for because I’m a very detailed and meticulous person when it comes to plants (I’m not like that in all aspects of my life!). Pothos stems are thicker than philodendron stems and are nearly the same color as the leaves. Philodendron stems are typically a greenish brown color, with fresh, expanded stems near the bottom being an orangey brown color (see photo above). Aerial (air) roots are used by both pothos and philodendrons to climb and take nutrients and moisture from the air. Aerial roots of Pothos are thick nubs with only one root emerging from each node. Philodendron aerial roots are thin and wiry and can grow in clusters of two to six.
Are philodendrons indoor or outdoor plants?
Philodendrons have been a mainstay in indoor gardens for years. Philodendron maintenance is simple since the plant will tell you exactly what it requires if you pay attention to its signals. Because philodendron plants adapt well to indoor settings, even inexperienced houseplant owners will have no issue growing them. This makes understanding how to care for a philodendron a breeze.
Philodendron houseplants are happy to stay indoors all year, but they also love a brief visit to a shady place when the weather permits. Taking the plant outside also allows you to wipe the leaves and flush the soil with plenty of fresh water. Philodendrons, unlike other houseplants, don’t seem to mind being moved from indoor to outdoor settings.
Is Monstera a philodendron?
Even though it isn’t classed as a philodendron, the monstera looks and acts like one. Split-leaf philodendron refers to two distinct philodendron species: Philodendron bipinnatifidum and Philodendron selloum.
Is a philodendron an ivy?
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit two tropical locales during this frigid, snowy winter. In December, I traveled to Costa Rica to pick up my son from his semester abroad, and I recently returned from my husband’s employee incentive trip to the Dominican Republic.
I obviously appreciated the warm, sunny weather in both places, but I really enjoy viewing the tropical vegetation. There are many native plants that we grow as houseplants.
Philodendron and pothos are two plants that always astonish me in their natural setting. Many houseplants are labeled as philodendron, however the majority are most likely pothos. Both have green leaves and are vining plants, yet they are extremely distinct. Allow me to attempt to explain.
Philodendrons are tropical plants with a variety of leaf shapes and colors. The heartleaf philodendron is the most common type of philodendron (Philodendron scandens subsp. oxycardium). This is a vine that grows quickly. It grows on slender, flexible vines with heart-shaped dark green leaves. This plant develops quickly. Because they withstand low light and fluctuating temperatures, all philodendrons are popular.
Pothos are plants that are very distinct from one another. Pothos, commonly known as Devil’s Ivy, is a tropical vine. Crisp, gleaming leaves with gold, white, or yellow patterns distinguish it. The silver pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Marble Queen’) is the most common. When young, it has smooth, waxy leaves that are mottled with white. Pothos require a little more light and warmth than philodendrons. Pothos, in fact, need more light to generate strong leaf patterns and variegation.
When grown in their natural habitat of the tropics, these plants produce amazing results. Both juvenile and adult leaves can be produced by them. In most cases, we only see the juvenile leaves in our homes. Adult leaves are larger and have a different form from juvenile leaves. Once the vining plant reaches a particular height, the larger adult leaves will appear at the top.
These plants are considered to be two of the best plants for purifying indoor air. NASA research from the late 1980s discovered that a variety of houseplants may eliminate typical indoor contaminants found in carpets, furniture, construction materials, and cleaning chemicals. For a typical 2,000 square foot household, the study suggests having at least 15 air-cleaning houseplants.
What is the rarest philodendron?
A Philodendron with a number name is bound to attract notice. This particular Philodendron, known as 69686, is native to the tropical French Guianas.
The number 69686 has no unusual or symbolic value. The researcher who discovered this Philodendron simply did not assign it a name; its identification number was 69686.
The Philodendron 69686 is a tree-grower with irregularly shaped dark green leaves and a similar appearance to the much rarer Philodendron Joepii below. Because a leaf from this Philodendron can grow to be two feet tall, it requires a lot of room to flourish.
This rare Philodendron has bunny-like ears on its lobed leaves and slender, upright green leaves. Philodendron 69686 grows in shaded regions in the natural, where it may easily spread its long stems.
Keep the environment of this fascinating plant as close to the tropics as possible. For the 69686, humidity and occasional watering are required; keep this plant moist so that its leaves can flourish.
Philodendron Joepii
Names of Philodendron species might be particularly challenging to pronounce. Philodendron Joepii (Yoo-Pee-Eye) is the name given to this plant after the Dutch researcher Joep Moonen, who discovered it in French Guiana.
The story of how this Philodendron was discovered is fascinating. Mr. Moonen discovered this Philodendron blooming atop an ant’s nest when he initially identified it. He then fell into the nest, where he was attacked by hundreds of ants! Indeed, the history of this intriguing plant is equally fascinating.
The green leaves on this odd-looking Philodendron make it stand out. The leaf of a Joepii plant is topped off with rabbit-like ears facing upwards, with a large lower-lobed body and a delicate upper section.
Philodendron Joepii grows best in medium light with some indirect light and well-draining soil. The Joepii, like other tropical plants, is watered once or twice a week.
Philodendron Billietiae (Variegated)
Due to its genetic arrangement, the variegated Philodendron Billietiae is one of the plants on this list that is unusual. The variegated Billietiae has orange stems and green foliage, just like the regular Billietiae. The stems and leaves of a variegated Philodendron Billietiae are orange with yellow speckles.
Variegation is uncommon in the wild, as previously stated. Only one out of every 100,000 plants possesses natural variegation in its leaf. Plants with this level of color variation are more expensive. Variegation is available in a variety of colors, including white, yellow, and a variety of other hues.
A single leaf of a standard Philodendron Billietiae will set you back roughly $60, but a variegated variant would set you back well over $1,000! Serious plant collectors will undoubtedly be prepared to pay money for the vivid yellow specks of variegation.
To begin with, regular Billietiaes are extremely unusual. A variegated Philodendron Billietiae is quite rare, as this huge plant is endemic to Brazil and French Guiana. Billietiae, both regular and variegated, will have tough, leathery leaves and a distinctive orange stem.
The variegated Billietiae, unlike the other plants on this list, thrives in bright, medium-light. It like to grow near river banks and tree logs, where it may get plenty of moisture. Give this Philodendron plenty of room to grow and plenty of water to drink if you manage to catch one of these treasures.
Because of its variegation, caring for this Billietiae can be difficult. Variegation on this variety of Philodendron can’revert,’ or return to its original hue. A variegated Philodendron Billietiae may turn entirely green again in this case. This plant’s high price also comes with a considerable risk.
Give this Philodendron plenty of strong light without exposing it to direct sunlight to maintain it in top condition. This magnificent Billietiae will develop yellow-green foliage if its light requirements are met.
Philodendron Spiritus Sancti
The gorgeous Philodendron Spiritus Sancti is arguably one of the most, if not the most, rare Philodendron varieties on this list. This specimen’s name alone conjures up images of sacredness and holiness!
The Spiritus Sancti is called after Espirito Santo, a Brazilian state. It’s no surprise that this Philodendron is so rare because it only grows in one area on the planet. There are only about six of these huge plants left in the wild, according to reports. Yes, there are six!
This plant is so uncommon that it is kept in a secure area in Espirito Santo, guarded by security guards and monitored by CCTV. The average cost of this climbing plant is anywhere between $5,000 and $10,000. Not bad for a plant on the verge of extinction.
On average, the Spiritus Sancti produces green leaves that are around 2 feet long. Despite the fact that this plant has a high price tag, it is quite easy to care for. The beautiful Spiritus Sancti will yield little, white blossoms with proper care.
As long as the Spiritus Sancti’s humidity requirements are maintained, it can be kept indoors or in the garden. This plant requires at least 50% humidity and needs to be watered deeply and thoroughly.
What is the prettiest philodendron?
Philodendron gloriosum is one of the most attractive and striking of all the philodendrons, with velvety green leaves that develop in a heart shape and are permeated by white veins (which are sometimes also pink or pale green instead).
This plant has gigantic heart-shaped leaves that can grow over a foot in diameter in the correct growth circumstances, while being more difficult to care for than some other types. It is quite straightforward to care for, even though it is not a plant for absolute beginners.
It’s worth noting that the gloriosum is a creeping plant that grows close to the ground in nature and should be allowed to grow horizontally in your home. The Philodendron gloriosum, unlike Monstera variants, should be potted in a rectangle rather than a round pot.
What is the most popular philodendron?
Philodendron hederaceum is the most common philodendron species found around the world. This species is well-known for its heart-shaped leaves and vibrant hues.
The hederaceum species does not require as much maintenance as other species in the genus. It’s a great option for people looking to create their first indoor or outdoor garden.
The stem can grow to a maximum height of three or four feet, depending on where you plant it. Finally, this species has a lifespan of up to 25 years.
What makes a plant a philodendron?
The leaves are often big and imposing, lobed or deeply cut, and pinnate in nature. They can also be oval, spear-shaped, or any other shape you can think of. On the stem, the leaves are borne alternately. Philodendrons are unique in that they do not have a single leaf kind on the same plant. Instead, they have juvenile and adult leaves that might be quite distinct from one another. Early in the plant’s life, seedling philodendron leaves are frequently heart-shaped. However, once it has grown through the seedling stage, the leaves will take on the shape and size of a typical juvenile leaf. The philodendron begins to produce adult leaves later in life, a process known as metamorphosis. The majority of philodendrons go through a slow transformation, with no obvious differences between juvenile and adult leaves. Adult leaves can have a drastically different shape than juvenile leaves, in addition to being much larger. In fact, these distinctions have caused great taxonomic difficulty in the past, resulting in juvenile and adult plants being classified as different species.

Secondary hemiepiphytes begin their journey up a tree on the dark forest floor, revealing their juvenile type leaves along the way. Primary hemiepiphytes are another probable trigger. The aerial roots of these philodendrons usually point downward. When their roots reach the ground below, the plant will begin to absorb nutrients from the soil that it had previously been deficient in. As a result, the plant will quickly mature into adult leaves and grow significantly in size. Another feature of philodendron leaves is that they can vary significantly in form and size, even amongst plants of the same species. Because of all of these diverse leaf shapes, it can be difficult to tell the difference between natural variability and morphogenesis.
