Does philodendron Scandens climb?
Climbing plants prefer to climb may appear to be a self-evident statement, but bear with me: it isn’t.
We like to cultivate climbing plants, especially climbing houseplants, in hanging baskets with their stems swinging downwards. They may appear attractive when fully grown, but they don’t enjoy it.
As they dangle longer, many will begin to produce smaller and smaller leaves. Most aroids, including philodendrons and pothos, as well as numerous Cissus, fall into this category. They may stop producing leaves altogether, leaving simply a growing green stem. Others simply cease growing after dangling for a while, or fail to blossom on any trailing stalks. Morning glories (Ipomoea spp.) are a good illustration of this.
Many climbing plants, of however, will fight dangling tooth and claw. Morning glories will rapidly begin to twine back up around their own stems in an attempt to climb higher once more. If you don’t let them, by untangling their stems and allowing them to trail further, they’ll stop growing and won’t bloom.
Auxins, which are found at their stem tips, cause this reaction. They concentrate at the topmost section of the stem, where they promote growth. The auxins get diluted and growth slows or stops when the plant hangs in what is effectively an upside down position.
When a hanging plant loses its support in the wild, it will often trail downward to the ground, generating smaller leaves as it goes, and then its stem will wander off across the earth until it finds a new support to climb.
At this point, it will begin to grow away from the light, a process known as negative phototropism, which is often unplantlike. But there’s a method to this madness: a tree trunk or other vertical item it might wish to climb on might provide deep shade. And it’s desperate to get up.
So the stalk shoots off in the direction of the darkest thing nearby. When it finds it, it begins to grow upward again, adopting positive phototropism like any other plant, and its leaves begin to grow larger again. At long last, joy!
Allowing your climbing plants to climb, rather than trail from a pot, up a trellis, a moss pole, or a wall, will allow them to accomplish some amazing things. When climbing, many aroids (philodendrons, pothos, monsteras, and so on) will begin to grow larger leaves much larger leaves. Also, the stems are significantly thicker.
Did you know that your good ol’ heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum, syn. P. oxycardium, P. scandens, and P. cordatum), whose leaves are generally just 2 inches (5 cm) broad when trailing, may produce leaves up to 30 cm in diameter when climbing?
And that neglected pothos (Epipremnum aureum, syn. Scindapsus aureus) in the corner outperforms the philodendron: at maturity (that is, when it grows upright and receives adequate light), not only do its leaves grow to enormous sizes, up to 40 inches by 18 inches (1 m by 45 cm), but they also become deeply cut, similar to monstera leaves.
This rise in leaf size is also linked to sexual maturity: these aroids will begin to bloom and produce seeds once they achieve full leaf size. You didn’t think philodendrons and pothos didn’t bloom? They will bloom if you raise them up a tree in a tropical environment (most rooms aren’t tall enough to get them to flowering size).
Other climbers continue to produce little leaves as they progress, leaves that do not change in size at first, and in some cases do not alter in size for years. Then, once they’ve climbed high enough, they transform into their mature form, with much larger leaves that are often of a different shape, and they begin to bloom and generate seeds. True ivies (Hedera spp.) and creeping figs also accomplish this (Ficus pumila).
Not all climbers have a negative reaction to dangling. I’ve never encountered a wax plant (Hoya spp.) that didn’t appear to mind if it grew upwards, downwards, or sideways.
Then there’s the situation of creeping plants like wandering jew (Tradescantia sp.) and Swedish ivy, which we utilize in hanging baskets (Plectranthus). Although we may mistake them for climbers, they are actually groundcovers that travel horizontally, roots as they go and producing carpets on the ground in nature. When you let them dangle, they grow and blossom flawlessly, and even if you force them to grow upwards by tying them to a support, their leaf size and habit will not change.
The same is true with epiphytic plants, such as the lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus spp.) and the goldfish plant (Aeschynanthus spp). (Nematanthus spp.). They look fantastic in hanging baskets since they naturally arch outwards and downwards and thrive in this environment. They aren’t, however, genuine climbers.
