Why My Phalaenopsis Orchid Is Not Blooming?

Insufficient light is the most prevalent reason for orchids failing to bloom. Although Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilum orchids thrive in the filtered light of a windowsill, many other kinds require more light. As an orchid receives more light, its leaves lighten in color.

Why is my orchid not flowering?

This is a list of five possible reasons why your orchid isn’t flowering; we hope you find it useful.

Insufficient light is the most prevalent reason for orchids failing to bloom. The Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilum orchids thrive in filtered light on a windowsill, but many other orchid types require more. Dendrobium, Cattleya, Oncidium, and other medium to high light orchids may require time spent outside in the summer to get the light levels required for blooming. Orchids aren’t like tomato plants in that they can’t endure direct sunlight. Dappled shade is preferable, and a brilliant window may appear to provide more light than outdoor shadow, it does not.

As an orchid receives more light, its leaves lighten in color. Too much light is usually indicated by extremely light yellow-green leaves, whilst too little light is indicated by very dark forest green foliage. In conclusion, if you have a Dendrobium, Cattleya, Oncidium, Cymbidium, Vanda, Brassia, or other high-light orchid growing inside on a windowsill that hasn’t blossomed in a year or two, it’s most likely due to a lack of light.

Orchids that demand a lot of light can be placed in a vanda basket or hung from a tree branch with a hook attached to the current pot. High light orchids can have a vigorous growth season with increased humidity and adequate watering. Dendrobiums have been known to rebloom after years of sitting on a windowsill without blooming. More light was the key to getting the bloom.

Roots that are strong produce strong blossoms. An orchid’s leaves may be deceivingly gorgeous, but its root system is in serious difficulty. Overwatering or a lack of repotting are two common causes of root problems. Orchid roots require oxygen to survive and will suffocate if they do not receive it. The media in which orchids are potted differs from that in which ordinary houseplants are potted. Even the best orchid mix degrades over time and has to be replaced. People frequently leave orchids in the mix for much too long due to a fear of repotting. This could be preventing the orchid from blooming due to a lack of stored strength.

The importance of selecting a high-quality orchid mix cannot be overstated. Don’t be deceived by the generic orchid mixes available at home improvement stores. When it comes to orchid mixtures, freshness and quality are crucial. When you witness the difference between a fresh mix made with the highest quality ingredients and store brands, you’ll never want to go back to those lesser mixtures.

Keeping a close eye on an orchid can reveal signs of danger in the root zone. Orchids that we buy in the store are usually pretty young. Each new leaf or pseudobulb should be larger or equal in size to the previous one throughout time. When the next new leaf or pseudobulb appears, or the plant enters its bloom cycle, this conclusion may usually be made.

Orchids have two different growth patterns: sympodial and monopodial. Monopodial orchids, the most common of which are Phalaenopsis and Vanda, grow from a single central stem with leaves on both sides. Each leaf should be at least as big as the one before it, and at least one or two new leaves should appear each year. On a monopodial orchid, the next bloom spike emerges from the underside of a leaf, usually two or three leaves down from the newest leaf and on the opposite side as the previous bloom spike. Monopodial orchids, such as Phalaenopsis, must produce new leaves each year in order to continue blooming. As the orchid increases in size and vigor, it will produce a bloom spike on both sides of the stem at the same time.

Sympodial orchids have multiple growths, with one or more new growths appearing each year. The growth pattern often resembles a corkscrew, with each new growth emerging from the side of the previous one in a circular pattern. For example, a young orchid in bloom might have four or five stalks, the majority of which have leaves, with the bloom coming from the largest stalk. These “stalks” are known as “pseudobulbs.” We expect to see a fresh pseudobulb sprout from the root of the previous pseudobulb around where the orchid bloomed if the orchid does well. This new pseudobulb will ideally grow to be at least as big as or bigger than the one that recently flowered throughout the leaf and root growth period (not the bloom period), which is normally in summer. This fresh pseudobulb will be the source of the following bloom spike. We want to create the largest, healthiest new pseudobulbs possible because they will be the source of bloom for the following season. The keys to healthy new growth are plenty of light, high-quality fertilizer, and plenty of water. As the orchid increases in size and strength, it will produce many pseudobulbs, each of which can spike at the same time, resulting in a large number of flowers.

Each orchid species blooms at a different period of the year. Because orchids can be forced to bloom off-cycle by nurseries, this may not be the same time of year as when they were purchased. Plant labels can be extremely useful for keeping track of bloom cycles. Most orchids bloom in the fall, winter, or spring after growing in the summer. Knowing when an orchid blooms might help relieve the frustration of wondering, “It’s July, why isn’t my Phalaenopsis in bloom again?” The Phalaenopsis orchid, for example, will most likely produce new leaves in the summer and early fall, and will bloom in the late fall. During the winter, the spike will lengthen, and blooms will appear in late winter or early spring. Many Phalaenopsis bloom off cycle for a variety of reasons (ranging from genetics to culture), but the majority will follow this pattern.

Many orchids bloom only once a year, whereas others bloom twice or even three times. Some flowers bloom for weeks or months, while others just endure a few days. A little basic investigation into the orchid’s species will reveal what to expect. Phalaenopsis orchids, for example, only bloom once a year and the blooms might linger for months. It’s possible that a pair of extra flowers will grow from the end of the bloom spike (or a branch of that spike) and bloom again after the flowers have fallen off. Phalaenopsis is a rewarding orchid to grow if you want a lot of long-lasting blooms. Cattleya, oncidium, and dendrobium bloom once or twice a year, with beautiful flowers lasting a month or two.

Orchids in nature have natural triggers that tell them the growth season is done and it’s time to bloom. Some orchids are sensitive to temperature, while others are sensitive to light. The natural cooling that happens in the fall frequently triggers those that are temperature sensitive to bloom. The orchid recognizes that the growing phase is coming to a close and that it is time to prepare for a bloom spike when the temperature drops. Orchids cultivated in our houses, where the temperature is relatively stable, are sometimes deprived of this natural indication and are hesitant to blossom. Temperatures in the 15s for a short period of time (1-2 weeks) are usually enough to cause a bloom increase in most Phalaenopsis. Light-sensitive orchids planted in houses with lights on after dark may also have their normal cycle interrupted. If these plants are permitted to spend the summer outdoors, they will normally notice the shorterening days and begin to flower.

Orchid Spike Care

  • Cut the spike (stem) 1 inch above the first node below the lowest flower bloom if the spike is still green (as shown in the image above).
  • Trim the flower spike at the plant’s base if it’s starting to turn brown. On brown spikes, Phalaenopsis orchids will not blossom.
  • Cut one spike 1 inch above the first node below the lowest flower bloom and the other spike at the base of the plant if your orchid has a double spike.

Your orchid is dormant, but not dead, at this time. This is how it will look for the next six to nine months, until fresh flowers arise.

Orchid Dormancy Care

Even when your orchid is dormant, it requires water and attention. To assist reblooming begin, follow these easy procedures.

  • Once a week, water your orchid with three ice cubes. Use 2 cubes for a petite orchid and 1 cube for a small orchid. If you’re using a planter with multiple plants, make sure each one has its own set of cubes.
  • Fertilize your orchid once or twice a month using a half-strength balanced houseplant fertilizer. During the weeks when your orchid is fertilized, avoid watering it with ice.
  • At night, move your orchid to a cooler location. The arrival of fresh flower spikes is aided by cooler nighttime temperatures (55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit). You can reset your orchid to its normal setting after a new spike appears.

Will my Phalaenopsis orchid bloom again?

Phalaenopsis (moth orchids) are among the most straightforward orchids to grow. Blooms can last for several months and can be rebloomed with little care. Some people, at least, can. I’ve had no luck getting another bloom, as evidenced by the shelf of non-blooming phalaenopsis. To be honest, I’m a little embarrassed. What can I do to get my orchids to blossom once more?

What is the best fertilizer for Phalaenopsis orchids?

Fertilize Phalaenopsis amabilis orchids every other week or at least once a month, according to orchid specialists. Fertilizers give valuable nutrients that encourage healthy orchid growth, as we explained in our earlier piece. Botanists have identified 17 nutrients that are required for optimal orchid growth. Micronutrients (also known as “trace elements”) play an important role in the health of Phalaenopsis orchids. Three macronutrients—nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K)—are considered critical; however, micronutrients (also known as “trace elements”) play an important role in the health of Phalaenopsis orchids.

Essential Nutrients and Their Uses

Calcium, iron, copper, zinc, and other micronutrients help to reinforce new stem and flower growth, allowing stems to withstand the weight of several blooms without drooping. Tree-dwelling epiphyte orchids, such as Phalaenopsis orchids, must rely on fertilizers to meet their nutrient needs, unlike terrestrial orchids that acquire critical micronutrients straight from the soil.

Choosing a Fertilizer

Choose a comprehensive, balanced orchid or all-purpose flower fertilizer with equal proportions of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (look for 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 on the label), as well as micro-nutrients, for Phalaenopsis orchids. Choose a fertilizer that does not contain urea, as this nitrogen component might take up to a year to degrade and become available to the plant. Non-urea fertilizers make 100% of the nitrogen available to the orchid right away.

Mix the necessary amount of fertilizer at half strength to fertilize your Phalaenopsis orchid. Place your orchid in the sink, making sure the drainage holes are clear, then pour fertilizer into the pot until liquid flows out the bottom. Before returning your orchid to its ornamental container, allow it to drain. During the weeks when you fertilize your orchid, avoid watering it with ice.

What is the best fertilizer for orchids to bloom?

Orchids require regular feeding. Growers recommend applying a “balanced” fertilizer with all “essential trace elements,” such as 20-20-20. It should include little or no urea, regardless of the fertilizer composition you choose.

How long does it take an orchid to flower again?

Water the plant thoroughly before feeding it, making sure the bark, moss, or other planting medium is moist but not waterlogged. Any excess water and/or fertilizer should be discarded.

Trim the flower spike (but not all the way) and let the plant settle into its next bloom/growth cycle to get a moth orchid to rebloom. A tight-fitting pitcher is preferred by mothorchids. The plant is seeking moisture and space, therefore roots that extend through the air over the pot rims are natural. As a sign of a growth surge, look for attractive, green root tips on plump, white roots, and then choose a little larger pot. After blooming, repotting with moss is recommended every other year in late spring or early summer.

Phalaenopsis orchids are one of the few orchids that will rebloom in the house. Between the scar made by the first blossom and the last node (that small lump) on the stalk, cut the spike. Within eight to twelve weeks, one of the lower nodes will begin and develop flowers.

Cut the stem all the way off and let the plant fall dormant if no bloom cycle starts within two months or if the stem yellows. Wait three to four weeks between watering and fertilizing.

How long do Phalaenopsis orchids last?

“Orchids can live for a long time if properly cared for, and they usually bloom twice a year. When the blossoms fade, many people believe the flower has perished, however this isn’t the case! This is quite natural, and if you stay patient, you’ll see them blossom again in about six months,” said VJ Mkrtchian, owner of Palm Springs Flower Mart.

Orchid blooms are simply stunning, and depending on the type of orchid, they can last anywhere from 6-8 weeks to several months. If you cut orchid stems, they won’t last as long as they would if they were still attached to the plant, but their longevity is still outstanding.

“Individual blooms can still outlast many other popular cut flower kinds. According to Tim Farrell, Teleflora teaching specialist and owner of Farrell’s Florist in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, “some dendrobium and phalaenopsis orchid stems can endure 14 to 21 days with adequate care.”

A well-kept phalaenopsis orchid (one of the most common varieties) can bloom for up to four months if properly cared for. At the end of the day, patience is the word of the game when it comes to orchids.

How long do Phalaenopsis orchids live?

Moth orchids (phalaenopsis) are one of the most popular indoor plants, and for good reason. They have beautiful flowers, as you can see in the photo, that receive their name from their moth-like look. When you combine that with the fact that they are really easy to care for, you have the perfect houseplant.

What is the average lifespan of phalaenopsis orchids? People frequently discard them once they have completed their flowering cycle due to their popularity and low cost. This normally lasts 2 to 3 months. However, some have been said to have lived for almost a century. So, with proper care and attention, you should be able to retain your orchid for several decades.

Because many individuals discard their orchids after the first bloom, they are often unaware that the plant is actually resting in preparation for the next bloom.

This is where it will store the energy needed to create such lovely or adorable blossoms as the monkey face orchid. You may expect a phalaenopsis orchid to bloom anywhere from once to three times per year. If you’re lucky and take excellent care of it, the latter.

A careful grower will be required to keep this plant alive for several decades. However, there are a few simple steps you can take to help it last longer.

How do you care for Phalaenopsis orchids?

The famous Phalaenopsis orchid is one of the easiest orchid species to cultivate as a houseplant, and it’s also known as the novice orchid or the moth orchid because of the shape of its blossoms. This orchid with leafy branches and long-lasting blossoms, native to India, China, and Southeast Asia, thrives in a bright, warm, humid environment. The Phalaenopsis usually blooms once a year, for up to three months, inside. The flowers will fade and fall off after a flowering cycle. Don’t panic if this happens; your orchid isn’t dead; it’s only conserving energy to blossom again next season.

Allow potting medium to dry out between waterings. Water every 1-2 weeks. After watering, dump off excess water if maintained in a stylish cache planter. Watering should be done more frequently in better light and less frequently in lower light.

Orchids dislike dry air, so keep the humidity around the plant between 50 and 70 percent. You can use a humidifier or a wet pebble tray to assist enhance humidity in the fall and winter.
