Fertilize Phalaenopsis amabilis orchids every other week or at least once a month, according to orchid specialists. Fertilizers give valuable nutrients that encourage healthy orchid growth, as we explained in our earlier piece. Botanists have identified 17 nutrients that are required for optimal orchid growth. Micronutrients (also known as “trace elements”) play an important role in the health of Phalaenopsis orchids. Three macronutrientsnitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K)are considered critical; however, micronutrients (also known as “trace elements”) play an important role in the health of Phalaenopsis orchids.
Essential Nutrients and Their Uses
Calcium, iron, copper, zinc, and other micronutrients help to reinforce new stem and flower growth, allowing stems to withstand the weight of several blooms without drooping. Tree-dwelling epiphyte orchids, such as Phalaenopsis orchids, must rely on fertilizers to meet their nutrient needs, unlike terrestrial orchids that acquire critical micronutrients straight from the soil.
Choosing a Fertilizer
Choose a comprehensive, balanced orchid or all-purpose flower fertilizer with equal proportions of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (look for 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 on the label), as well as micro-nutrients, for Phalaenopsis orchids. Choose a fertilizer that does not contain urea, as this nitrogen component might take up to a year to degrade and become available to the plant. Non-urea fertilizers make 100% of the nitrogen available to the orchid right away.
Mix the necessary amount of fertilizer at half strength to fertilize your Phalaenopsis orchid. Place your orchid in the sink, making sure the drainage holes are clear, then pour fertilizer into the pot until liquid flows out the bottom. Before returning your orchid to its ornamental container, allow it to drain. During the weeks when you fertilize your orchid, avoid watering it with ice.
How do you fertilize Phalaenopsis orchids?
Fertilize with Searles Flourish Orchid Booster for the best results. Apply to foliage and soil every 7 to 14 days. Apply SeaMax Fish & Kelp every 2 to 4 weeks to boost plant resilience to pest and disease assault. Phalaenopsis thrive in humid environments, with humidity levels of 55-75 percent being optimum.
When should I fertilize my Phalaenopsis orchid?
After the blooms have faded, experts recommend fertilizing Phalaenopsis orchids every other week or at least once a month. Use a dilute solution of a balanced plant fertilizer to feed your orchid.
What is the best fertilizer for orchids to bloom?
Orchids require regular feeding. Growers recommend applying a “balanced” fertilizer with all “essential trace elements,” such as 20-20-20. It should include little or no urea, regardless of the fertilizer composition you choose.
Do you fertilize orchids while blooming?
Orchid blooms’ rich hues can instantly brighten any environment, which begs the question: who wants to enjoy an orchid for only one season?
Though caring for your Phalaenopsis orchid is straightforward, adding another simple step to your routinefertilizingcan help give it an extra push, allowing it to continue to provide you with gorgeous blooms for years to come.
Orchids, like people, require rest. And it is during this resting phase that your orchid receives the nutrition it requires to produce vivid blossoms for you. Consider the resting period to be your nightly slumber (though an orchid’s hibernation is more related to hibernation), and the fertilization process to be similar to taking a vitamin it’s not necessary for your health, but it can help if you need it.
Fertilizing your orchid isn’t as difficult as watering it. It’s even simple to set up a fertilization program to give your blooms a nutritional boost. Here are some guidelines for determining when, why, and how to fertilize orchids.
Fertilizing: The When
Fertilize your orchid once the last bloom has faded. Fertilize your orchid at least once a month and no more than once every other week when it is resting. On the weeks that you fertilize, you don’t need to water. While your orchid is in bloom, you can fertilize it, although it isn’t necessary. This procedure should be done during the resting phase of your orchid’s life to provide extra nutrients for reblooming.
Fertilizing: The Why
Orchids thrive in a tropical atmosphere, which, let’s face it, isn’t present in most households. Fertilizing your orchid not only gives it a boost in energy for reblooming, but it also feeds it with nutrients it wouldn’t get in its natural habitat. Including fertilization in your care routine also aids in the replenishment of nutrients in your potting soil.
Fertilizing: The How
If you can’t find an orchid-specific fertilizer, use an all-purpose flower fertilizer with nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. By mixing the fertilizer with water, you’ll be able to dilute it by half. Then use a watering can with a narrow spout to apply it.
Fertilizing your orchid can be easily incorporated into your regular watering routine to ensure that your blooms remain healthy and colorful. Download our free orchid fertilization guide for more detailed instructions on fertilization, including how to choose the proper fertilizer and more.
How do you spray fertilizer on orchids?
The ideal method is to dilute the orchids’ liquid fertilizer with water in a plastic bottle and spray it using a pistol-grip, hand-operated sprayer. After you’ve watered your orchids, sprinkle the base of the plants with the necessary amount of fertilizer, which has been diluted to one-quarter to one-half strength. If you reside in an area with hard water, fertilize your orchids every other time you water to remove extra minerals.
Spraying the leaves near the bottom of the plants, especially if they still have water droplets on them, will cause the leaves to die. If your orchids are in bark mounts, remove them and sprinkle the fertilizer solution straight on the roots of the plants.
How do you make homemade orchid fertilizer?
To water your orchids, dissolve a teaspoon of molasses in a quart or two of water. A decent orchid fertilizer is epsom salts mixed with water. Epsom salts are a type of magnesium sulfate. A teaspoon of Epsom salts in 2 quarts of water can provide a magnesium boost to your orchids.
Is rice water good for orchids?
Rice water is beneficial to orchids because it: 1) increases the starches that beneficial fungi use; 2) provides the orchid with protein, crude fiber, free amino acids, calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, potassium, thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin in small doses; and 3) rice water promotes accelerated growth, healthy growth, and healthy growth.
Orchid Spike Care
- Cut the spike (stem) 1 inch above the first node below the lowest flower bloom if the spike is still green (as shown in the image above).
- Trim the flower spike at the plant’s base if it’s starting to turn brown. On brown spikes, Phalaenopsis orchids will not blossom.
- Cut one spike 1 inch above the first node below the lowest flower bloom and the other spike at the base of the plant if your orchid has a double spike.
Your orchid is dormant, but not dead, at this time. This is how it will look for the next six to nine months, until fresh flowers arise.
Orchid Dormancy Care
Even when your orchid is dormant, it requires water and attention. To assist reblooming begin, follow these easy procedures.
- Once a week, water your orchid with three ice cubes. Use 2 cubes for a petite orchid and 1 cube for a small orchid. If you’re using a planter with multiple plants, make sure each one has its own set of cubes.
- Fertilize your orchid once or twice a month using a half-strength balanced houseplant fertilizer. During the weeks when your orchid is fertilized, avoid watering it with ice.
- At night, move your orchid to a cooler location. The arrival of fresh flower spikes is aided by cooler nighttime temperatures (55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit). You can reset your orchid to its normal setting after a new spike appears.
