“Orchids can live for a long time if properly cared for, and they usually bloom twice a year. When the blossoms fade, many people believe the flower has perished, however this isn’t the case! This is quite natural, and if you stay patient, you’ll see them blossom again in about six months,” said VJ Mkrtchian, owner of Palm Springs Flower Mart.
Orchid blooms are extremely stunning, and depending on the variety of orchid, they can last anywhere from 6-8 weeks to several months. If you cut orchid stems, they won’t last as long as they would if they were still attached to the plant, but their longevity is still outstanding.

A well-kept phalaenopsis orchid (one of the most common varieties) can bloom for up to four months if properly cared for. At the end of the day, patience is the word of the game when it comes to orchids.
How often should you water Phalaenopsis orchids?
Watering your phal once a week is usually enough if it’s potted in bark. When the top of your moss-potted plant feels dry, water it. The quantity of light and heat your plant receives has an impact on how often it needs to be watered. Summer months will necessitate more regular watering, but winter months will necessitate less.

The roots stay damp, the potting mix stays soggy, and the orchid’s health deteriorates instead of producing more roots to fill the space. An orchid in the appropriate container size should dry out every 7-10 days, if not sooner. It’s almost certainly overpotted if the plant remains damp for two weeks after watering.
It is not a certainty that a newly acquired orchid will be in the right size pot. In the potted plant industry, there is a belief that an orchid in a 6 inch container will sell for more than one in a 4 or 5 inch pot. As a result, we occasionally discover that the orchids we purchase have been placed in larger pots for marketing purposes. As a result, it’s not unusual for a newly acquired orchid to require a smaller pot during its first repotting. Yet, while it is normal to anticipate to repot a plant up a pot size (as we would with most houseplants), doing so with one that is already overpotted exacerbates the problem. The best advise we can give is to place your orchid in the appropriate size container based on its root mass. Give it lots of room to flourish instead of trying to do it a favor.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

The orchid should be kept in a room that maintains a constant temperature throughout the day, is free of drafts and fruit, and receives indirect sunshine.
What’s indirect sunlight?
Sunlight that has been filtered by bouncing off a wall or passing through an item before reaching the orchid is known as indirect sunlight. If you’re not sure if your location is adequate, you can use your palm to measure light intensity. Put your hand a few inches above the plant’s leaves at the height of the day, when the sun is shining brightly through the window (a sunny day is better to try this rather than an overcast day), and cast a shadow over the plant.
Should you mist Phalaenopsis orchids?
While there are certain advantages to misting your orchids, there are also some disadvantages. Here are six reasons why misting your orchids is a bad idea.
Risk Of Fungal Spots On The Flowers
People maintain orchids at home for the lovely blossoms, but fungal patches can detract from the flowers’ appearance. Misting water droplets are a primary contributor.
Water droplets on the petals will not evaporate fast, especially in cool weather, and a small patch of fungal illness may develop on the petal. This is permanent and will last the flower’s entire life.
I recently purchased a phalaenopsis orchid from a local business that has had this problem since the beginning. To safeguard the orchid, it was wrapped in cellophane and crammed in with other orchids. I didn’t see until I got home that a handful of the blossoms were covered in unattractive fungal patches.
While this isn’t the end of the world, it does detract from the appearance of my flowers. To receive the immaculate orchid flowers I crave, I’ll have to wait until the next blooming cycle.
Risk Of Crown Rot
This is the orchid killer you should be aware of. Some water will run off the leaves and pool in the crown and other locations between the leaves if you shower your orchids on a frequent basis. The water that collects here may not evaporate fast, especially in the conditions that are frequent within our homes.
Evaporation is reduced in colder temperatures and spaces with less airflow. The water may remain in contact with the plant’s leaves and crown for an extended period of time, increasing the risk of leaf and crown rot.
This water will enable crown rot to develop quickly, causing serious harm to the plant. Crown rot eats away at the base of the leaves quickly, and by the time it’s discovered, it’s usually too late to rescue the plant.

But why don’t orchids acquire crown rot in the wild? Orchids grown in a greenhouse do not grow in the same manner that orchids grown in the wild do. In nature, orchids do not grow straight in pots; instead, they are attached to trees, with their leaves dangling downwards at an angle. Any water that collects on an orchid’s leaves runs off away from the crown, reducing the chance of crown rot.
There Are Better Ways To Increase Humidity
There are more effective techniques to enhance humidity levels around your orchids without adding to the risks associated with misting.
Fine water droplets are sprayed about your orchid during misting. Many of these may land on the plant and stay there for an extended period of time before evaporating, increasing the risk of fungal and bacterial disease.
What you really want is water vapor, which will raise the air’s humidity level, rather than water droplets, which will collect on plant leaves and flowers. Later in this essay, I’ll offer some advice on how to raise humidity the appropriate way.
Infrequent Misting Can Actually Dehydrate Your Orchid
Most individuals who mist their orchids can only do so on a very rare basis, so the orchid receives little benefit and may even suffer from increased dehydration.
Misting your orchids increases local humidity for a brief period of time. The stomata on the underside of the orchid leaves open as a result of this.
The plant is at risk of losing more water than it gains due to the open stomata caused by the temporary rise in local humidity, as the humidity levels around the plant drop rapidly after misting. As a result, misting your orchids can, in certain cases, cause them to become dehydrated.
Watering Your Orchid Via The Roots Is More Effective
When water is available, orchids have evolved to quickly absorb it through their roots. There’s no need to spray orchids because they’ll get enough of water if you just water them normally.
Watering orchids, especially phalaenopsis orchids, which are the most common kind in our homes, is best done properly but seldom. A phalaenopsis orchid can absorb enough water to last for 1-2 weeks with just a few minutes of exposure to plenty of it.
Risk Of Fungal And Bacterial Disease
The major reason I don’t advocate spraying orchids is because of this. More orchids die from fungal and bacterial disease than from any other cause. Excessive misting and humidity conditions, as well as overwatering, can cause root rot.
Reduce the danger of fungal and bacterial infections by erring on the side of lower humidity and less water in general.

What is the best fertilizer for Phalaenopsis orchids?
Fertilize Phalaenopsis amabilis orchids every other week or at least once a month, according to orchid specialists. Fertilizers give valuable nutrients that encourage healthy orchid growth, as we explained in our earlier piece. Botanists have identified 17 nutrients that are required for optimal orchid growth. Micronutrients (also known as “trace elements”) play an important role in the health of Phalaenopsis orchids. Three macronutrients—nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K)—are considered critical; however, micronutrients (also known as “trace elements”) play an important role in the health of Phalaenopsis orchids.
Essential Nutrients and Their Uses
Calcium, iron, copper, zinc, and other micronutrients help to reinforce new stem and flower growth, allowing stems to withstand the weight of several blooms without drooping. Tree-dwelling epiphyte orchids, such as Phalaenopsis orchids, must rely on fertilizers to meet their nutrient needs, unlike terrestrial orchids that acquire critical micronutrients straight from the soil.
Choosing a Fertilizer
Choose a comprehensive, balanced orchid or all-purpose flower fertilizer with equal proportions of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (look for 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 on the label), as well as micro-nutrients, for Phalaenopsis orchids. Choose a fertilizer that does not contain urea, as this nitrogen component might take up to a year to degrade and become available to the plant. Non-urea fertilizers make 100% of the nitrogen available to the orchid right away.
Mix the necessary amount of fertilizer at half strength to fertilize your Phalaenopsis orchid. Place your orchid in the sink, making sure the drainage holes are clear, then pour fertilizer into the pot until liquid flows out the bottom. Before returning your orchid to its ornamental container, allow it to drain. During the weeks when you fertilize your orchid, avoid watering it with ice.

Phalaelnopsis thrive in temperatures similar to ours: over 60 degrees at night and between 70 and 80 degrees during the day. Remember that the temperature on your windowsill is cooler or hotter than the rest of your house, and this might cause buds to drop off just as they are about to open (causing a huge bummer). Make sure your Phalaelnopsis doesn’t get in the way of any drafts.
Do Phalaenopsis orchids need sunlight?
Phalaenopsis has grown in popularity. The fact that the blossoms endure three months or longer on an elegant arching spike with many flowers is the fundamental reason for their popularity. Late winter and early spring are the best times to see phalaenopsis bloom. If extra humidity is provided, phalaenopsis are easy to grow in normal home settings. These are plants that can be grown. Remember that the fundamentals of gardening are the same for all plants, including orchids. Orchids can be grown by anyone who can grow plants.
Compare and contrast our landscapes. In dark environments, some of us cultivate impatiens, whereas in bright landscapes, we grow lantana. We choose plants that thrive in the conditions found in our environment. Orchids can be grown using the same principles. Grow orchids that require a sunny position, such as Oncidiums, Dendrobiums, and Cattleyas, if you have a sunny growing place. Grow Phalaenopsis and Paphiopedilums in low-light environments.
Phalaenopsis thrives in low-light environments. The exact amount of light they require is between 1,000 and 1,500 foot candles. You can use a light meter to determine the amount of light or judge the plant’s growth. Place Phalaenopsis in a window facing east or south. If the light is right, the leaf will seem yellow-green rather than dark green. The presence of dark green leaves or new leaves that are longer and narrower than the old leaf suggests that the light level is too low. Artificial light will help Phalaenopsis flourish. Phalaenopsis should be grown 9 to 12 inches under fluorescent grow lights or 4 to 6 feet under 400 watt HID or high pressure sodium lights. If your Phalaenopsis does not have a bloom spike by February, relocate it to a brighter location. A single little incandescent bulb can have a significant impact.
Normal household temperatures are ideal for growing Phalaenopsis. Phalaenopsis thrives at temperatures ranging from 60 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Phalaenopsis thrives in temperatures ranging from 72 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Allowing the temperature to go below 60 degrees Fahrenheit puts the plant in danger. During the winter, check the temperature on the window sill. Allow the nighttime temperature to drop to 60 degrees Fahrenheit for three weeks in the fall. The flower spike will be triggered by the temperature reduction. Three weeks after the cold treatment, the flower spike should begin to grow.
The flower spike will expand in the direction of the brightest light source. The location of the flowers on the spike is crucial. All of the blooms will face the brightest source of light. The plant should always face the same direction after the flower spike begins to grow. When you’re done watering the plant, turn it back around to face the original direction. Do not flip the plant around if it is growing on a window sill and the flower spike is growing into the window. If you do, the spike will continue to expand until it reaches the window, resulting in a crooked spike.
Phalaenopsis, like most epiphytic orchids, thrives under humidity levels of 50% or more. Humidity levels in most homes range from 30 to 40%. Provide a mechanism for water to constantly evaporate around the orchids to maintain a high level of humidity. Fill a pan or saucer halfway with pebbles. Arrange the plant on top of the gravel. Fill the pan or saucer with water until it reaches the top of the gravel. Allow no water to come into contact with the pot’s bottom. This will create a high-humidity micro-environment just around the plant. Sheet metal firms can make custom pans to fit window sills or tables. Humidity is not replaced by misting. There’s a lot of moisture in the air. Misting is not the same as misting. If there isn’t enough air movement, misting promotes leaf spot illnesses. Please don’t mist.
When the orchid requires it, water it. Humidity, potting media, type of pot, size of pot, time of year, and the orchid all determine when to water. The most common cause of orchid death is overwatering. So, if you’re unsure, don’t water.
Orchids need to be well soaked. Give them more than sips. Epiphytic plants are Phalaenopsis. Velamen is a spongy tissue that covers the roots of epiphytic orchids. This tissue receives water and nutrients from the air in nature. Orchid roots have the same ability in cultivation. Orchids require more air around their roots than terrestrial plants. Take a look at the roots’ velamen. It’s best if the tip is a gleaming green or crimson. The velamen should be plump with a gleaming gray or silver appearance. Watch the velamen turn greenish as you water. This color shift indicates that you are watering your plants thoroughly. Wait a few days until the velamen turns gray or silver again, then water. Stick a pencil into the media if the orchid is potted in peat-based media, just like you would a toothpick into a cake. Do not moisten the pencil if it comes out of the media with peat on it or the wood damp. The velamen become brown and mushy as a result of overwatering, and the roots lose their ability to absorb water.
What matters is how you manage the orchids in the media, not what media you use to grow them in. Keep in mind that the roots require oxygen. The most serious issue is overwatering. In the media, water takes the place of air. Use a medium with large particles to allow for lots of airflow. Every orchid gardener has a favorite media and is always experimenting with new ones. Stick with it after you’ve found one that works for you. Because of their accessibility, peat-based media are becoming increasingly popular. The formulae for each of these media are different. Many of them contain a wetting ingredient that keeps the soil moist for longer.
After the Phalaenopsis has finished flowering, repot it in late spring or summer. Remove all of the old media from the roots. Cut off any damaged or diseased root (brown and/or mushy) with sterilized pruning shears. The roots of healthy plants are white and turgid. Depending on the size of the roots, repot the plant in the same or a larger pot. To accommodate the roots, use a pot that is the same size as the roots.
Fertilize with a half strength fertilizer every two weeks. If the orchid is potted in bark media, use a 3:1:1 fertilizer ratio. If potted in peat-based substrate, fertilize at a 1:1:1 ratio. In the winter, orchids, like other plants, slow down their growth. During the winter, reduce the amount of fertilizer applied. In November, while the plants are forming their flower buds, fertilize with a 1:3:1 (high phosphorus) fertilizer.
