Drooping, yellowing leaves, brown tips, and root rot from suffocation are all signs of an overwatered peace lily. Move the peace lily to a shady place, treat root rot, then repot it with fresh potting mix to revive and save it. To avoid waterlogging, make sure the pot has a draining hole.
Peace lilies can only be found in tropical forests, not swampy areas. As a result, overwatering will have a detrimental impact on it because it is accustomed to getting just enough water.
How long does a peace lily take to recover from overwatering?
Overwatering is defined as any condition in which your Peace Lily sits in wet soil for an extended period of time. Let’s take a look at the main causes of overwatering.

- Season – In the winter, Peace Lilies grow considerably more slowly, and the soil takes much longer to dry up after watering, increasing the risk of overwatering.
- Cold temperatures and a lack of ventilation impede evaporation and transpiration, leading the soil to dry out more slowly after watering.
What happens if you over water a peace lily?
The peace lily prefers medium, indirect light and will produce yellow leaves if it receives too much or too little. If the plant is exposed to direct sunlight, brown blotches and streaks may appear. Why does my peace lily need so much water?

Because peace lilies are suited to tropical climates with regular precipitation, they are prone to wilting in our houses due to dry air and drowning.
They can also wilt and turn yellow as a result of overwatering or, more commonly, resting in stagnant water.
It’s critical to mimic the watering conditions of the native ecosystem when growing peace lilies in your house.
Peace lilies like their soil to be evenly moist, therefore they should be watered about once a week with a good soak. To avoid overwatering and obtain the best moisture balance, the soil’s surface should begin to feel somewhat dry in between watering sessions.
While peace lilies thrive in homes with room temperatures of 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 23°C) during the day and at least 50°F (10°C) at night, the air in our homes is frequently too dry for them to thrive.
Air conditioning, forced air, and conventional currents from heat sources can worsen dy air by sucking moisture from the leaves and drying out pots more quickly.
Mist the leaves of your peace lily at least once a week, if not more frequently, to create a humid microclimate that mimics the humid conditions of its native rainforest home.
Your peace lily will not dry out since the mist promotes humidity and decreases water loss from the leaves.
If the peace lily is not sprayed on a regular basis in particularly dry homes, the edges of the leaves brown and the peace lily droops.
When it comes to watering peace lilies, there are a few other things to consider:
- The flow of air in and out of your home (draughts, open windows, air conditioning can all sap moisture from leaves).
Feel the soil to an inch depth to determine how often to water your peace lily based on your individual conditions.
When the top inch of the soil feels damp but the surface of the soil feels somewhat dry to the touch, it’s time to water.
In most cases, one a week is sufficient, but you should tailor the frequency of watering peace lilies to your specific circumstances to avoid the leaves turning yellow and drooping due to dehydration or overwatering.
How to Tell Whether your Peace Lily is Under Watered or Over Watered
Surprisingly, the symptoms of both a drought-stressed or under-watered peace lily and an over-watered peace lily are nearly identical:
- The most visible and pronounced impact of drought stress and overwatering is drooping leaves.
Feel the dirt at the bottom of the pot via the drainage hole to determine whether your peace lily is suffering from underwatering or overwatering.
If the soil is marshy or damp, overwatering is the issue; however, if the soil is rather dry, underwatering and drought stress are the culprits.

Important Peace Lily Watering Tips
The peace lily is a tropical plant that grows well in hot weather. The rain in Columbia is usually significantly warmer than the tap water in your house.
When watered with cold water, the roots of the peace lily can experience some moderate shock because they are sensitive to low temperatures.
Before watering, it’s better to let the water in its container until it reaches about room temperature.
Fluoride and chlorine in the water can cause the tips of the leaves to turn brown and brittle, making peace lilies vulnerable. If you let the water out overnight before watering your peace lily, the chlorine will evaporate.
Fluoride can accumulate and harm the peace lily, however using filtered water or rainwater to water your peace lily on a regular basis can help to counteract these effects.
How Often to Water a Peace Lily in Winter
However, because of the fewer hours of light and lower intensity of light, growth slows down during the winter (peace lilies should grow in bright indirect light).
Cooler average temperatures, which minimize evaporation and water loss from the leaves, can help to reduce water usage.
However, due to artificial sources of heat, the temperature indoors can change more in the winter, causing the plant to dry out considerably faster than typical.

How often should you water a peace lily?
Your Happiness Lily likes to be watered once a week, but it will let you know when it needs water by drooping its leaves. During the winter, you can water your plant only once every two weeks.
Can a peace lily come back to life?
You’ll notice if your Peace lily has been underwatered because it’s difficult to ignore a plant that’s collapsed all over its pot. They do not, in a sense, suffer in quiet.
Peace Lilies usually come back to life after being well watered, which contributes to their forgiving character. It’s fantastic that the plant has survived “Talks” to us about how thirsty we are, but don’t go too far.
A plant that has been water-stressed may not fully recover; damage manifests itself as sluggish growth, brown regions that never regreen, and increased leaf loss.
If your plant is extremely rootbound and the rootball isn’t getting completely watered, it could be suffering from prolonged drought. Unpot the plant to inspect the roots, or check for dry spots after watering with a wooden chopstick or pencil inserted into the roots.
If you’ve determined that the problem is underwatering, soak the soil well to rehydrate any parts of the mix that may repel water when dry. After then, don’t water as much as before “make it up,” simply resume proper watering and continue to watch more closely in the future.
Low Temperatures Or Drafts
Peace Lilies thrive in regular household temperatures, but they become worried when the temperature drops below 41 degrees Fahrenheit (5oC). A Peace Lily might die if it is exposed to extremely cold weather.
Cold-induced damage might manifest itself in the form of yellow or blackened leaves. You might not get much of a heads-up before the damage is done, so be cautious.
Keep the plant away from uninsulated glass because windowsills can get very cold. These places warm up during the day, therefore some growers take them off the window sill at night or during a cold spell.
Improper Lighting
Peace Lilies are one of the greatest low-light houseplants, and they can even flower in low light, but they can’t grow in complete darkness. If the light is too low, they may suffer and become stagnant, but this is typically visible.
Their natural preference is for light shade, yet outdoor shade is brighter than most interior lighting. Brown or yellow leaves are signs of low light stress. Low light might also result in smaller leaves and slower growth.
It’s a simple problem to solve: simply make the environment brighter. Peace Lilies grow best in north-facing windows and under fluorescent lights.
They can withstand harsh indirect light as well, although direct sunlight will quickly sear them. Morning sun is normally fine, but if the plant is exposed to direct sunlight and you notice brown blotches, it requires more protection.
Can a plant recover from root rot?
You must assess if the plant can be rescued if root rot has been found. It is too late to preserve the plant if the entire root system has gone mushy. However, if the plant has some healthy, white, solid roots, consider transplanting it in fresh soil with proper drainage to bring it back to life.
Clean the roots gently under running water and remove all brown, mushy roots with a sharp pair of scissors before replanting. Just above the injured area, cut the healthy root. Replant within a few hours by working swiftly. To avoid spreading fungal spores to other plants or soil, disinfect the scissors with a solution of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water4 after all roots have been trimmed.
Does peroxide help root rot?
While hydrogen peroxide has been used as a general “fertilizer,” either added during watering or sprayed into the foliage, it is not a fertilizer and can only assist plants develop. What do you mean by that? Because of the extra oxygen molecule, hydrogen peroxide promotes healthy root growth. Plant roots can use oxygen to help them absorb nutrients from the soil. As a result of the extra oxygen, the roots are able to absorb more nutrients, resulting in faster, healthier, and more vigorous development. Hydrogen peroxide also has the added benefit of warding off any unwelcome germs or fungi that may be lurking in the garden.
Using the 3 percent solution, put 1 teaspoon (5 ml.) per cup (240 ml.) of water in a spray bottle and sprinkle the plant to give it an extra boost of oxygen or for insect control. This amount can also be used to treat seedlings before planting to prevent fungal infections. Use 1 tablespoon (15 mL) per cup of water for plants with root rot or fungal infections. The solution can be produced ahead of time and kept for later use, but be sure to keep it cool and dark to preserve its efficacy.
If you need to cover a bigger area, 35 percent hydrogen peroxide may be more cost-effective. Add 3/4 cup (180 mL) additional 4 teaspoons (20 mL) of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide to 10 gallons (38 liters) of water. In a large container, garden sprayer, or bathtub, mix the solution. Avoid soaking the foliage by watering at the base of the plants. When using this proportion of peroxide, exercise extreme caution. It has the potential to bleach and/or burn the skin. After each rainstorm, or as needed, spray the vegetable garden.
This is not only a safer alternative to pesticides, but it also has the added benefit of being anti-fungal and providing plants with a healthy dose of oxygen. In addition, 3 percent peroxide solutions are widely available (even at 99 cent stores!) and rather inexpensive.
