Should you cut the flowers off a peace lily?
In October of 2008, I brought home a magnificent peace lily plant from my father’s burial. It’s been full and green since then, with a lot of blossoms. My concern is, when you say follow the bloom stalk to the plant’s base and cut it, do you also mean cut the leaf to which it is attached? Because the leaf is green and healthy, I just cut off the wasted blooms at the base of the stem that is attached to the leaf. By cutting the flower stem there, there was no damage to the leaf, and the plant bloomed new flowers. My worry is that it hasn’t bloomed in the same area since I trimmed it down. I currently have a bloom that will need to be removed soon, and this one is attached to a leaf whose stem is attached to two other large and healthy leaves. In a nutshell, should I plant seeblooms where the dead ones were chopped off? Is it true that I’m cutting in the right spot? I don’t get any additional growth if I cut the plant at the base, and the stem becomes yellow and is easily pulled out. Melanie
The spent peace lily bloom should be trimmed at the plant’s base, leaving only the bloom stalk.
A flower will not form in the same area as before, whether you cut the leaf off or not.
Now I’m not sure what “stem becomes yellow and is readily pilled out” means.
Is it the bloom stalk or the leaf stem you’re referring to?
The bloom stem should be removed so that nothing is left to become yellow.
That is why you must cut the bloom stalk all the way down to the base of the plant, where it originates.
If the leaf stem is turning yellow, cutting the bloom stalk off may cause damage to the leaves.
If the leaf stem appears to be damaged in any manner, it must be removed for the sake of the plant’s health. I sometimes have to take a leaf off because of the way the blossoms are positioned. Trimming the leaves of your peace lily will not harm it.
