Indoor and outdoor gardens can be quickly destroyed by these tiny sucking pests. Here is a quick and natural technique to get rid of spider mites.
Numerous spider mite species, which are widespread in North America and belong to the Tetranychidae family, attack both indoor and outdoor plants. In greenhouses, they can cause extremely serious damage.
Since they are related to spiders, ticks, and scorpions, spider mites are classified as an arachnid rather than an actual bug. Adults are oval-shaped, pale or reddish brown in color, and extremely little (1/50 inch long), roughly the size of the period at the end of this sentence. Stages that are not fully developed resemble adults but are smaller.

Predators of the great majority of plant-feeding mites are among the numerous species that are widespread in North America. They are also exceedingly prolific, which accounts for the fact that severe infestations frequently develop undetected before plants exhibit harm.
Fine webbing frequently accompanies large populations. Strawberries, melons, beans, tomatoes, eggplant, decorative flowers, trees, and the majority of houseplants are among the numerous host plants.
Life Cycle
On the leaves and bark of their host plants, the majority of mite species overwinter as eggs. Tiny six-legged larvae begin hatching in the early spring as the temperature rises. They feed for a few days before looking for cover, when they molt into the first nymphal stage. Eight-legged nymphs go through two more molts before maturing into adults.
Females continuously generate up to 300 eggs over the course of a few weeks after mating. The rapid development of these pests is encouraged by hot, dry weather. Under these circumstances, it may only take 5 days for an egg to develop into an adult. Each year, there are numerous overlapping generations.
Spider mites can ride the wind. They spread out over a vast area when the breezes carry their webbing. Infested plants must be carefully contained and disposed of.
Damage
Spider mites that are nearly invisible enter our plants undetected. No matter how few, each one survives by consuming plant cells’ contents. Large infestations leave behind physical harm. The earliest patterns on leaves are stipplings or little dots. They could become discolored, curl, or fall off. The tight webs that grow under leaves and along stems are evidence of mite activity.
According to the Integrated Pest Management website of the University of California Agricultural and Natural Resources division, mites can cause the following kinds of harm:
- Loss of leaves on annual vegetable crops, such as squash, melons, and watermelons, can significantly reduce productivity and cause sunburn.
- Spider mites can directly harm crops like sugar peas and beans when the afflicted pods are present.
- Mites on ornamentals are mainly an aesthetic issue, but if populations get very high on annual plants, they can actually harm plants. Spider mites are another significant pest of roses growing in fields.
How to Control
By destroying the beneficial insects that hunt on spider mites, chemical pesticide use in fact promotes their spread. Additionally, mites are known to quickly adapt their resistance to different insecticides. These factors make it crucial to use efficient natural and organic approaches to control mites.
- Pruning plant portions that are infected way past any webbing, such as leaves and stems, and discarding them in the trash (and not in compost piles). To stop the mites from spreading to nearby plants, don’t be afraid to pluck up entire plants.
- Wash plants with a powerful jet of water with the Bug Blaster to eradicate pests.
- Natural enemies that can be purchased commercially include predatory mites, lacewings, and ladybugs. Releases should be made when pest populations are low to medium for best outcomes.
- Nuke Em, a relatively new organic insecticide with components of the highest food quality, eliminates the majority of indoor gardening pests quickly, whether they are in their egg, larval, or adult stages. The best part is that it accomplishes this without leaving a substance on the leaves that can affect flavor.
- A powerful biological insecticide called BotaniGard ES contains Beauveria bassiana, an entomopathogenic fungus that kills seven resistant forms of a broad list of difficult crop pests. Where do spider mites on outdoor plants come from?
Let’s learn more about these pests’ life cycle now that we have a basic understanding of them.
Spider mites begin their life as eggs that adults lay on host plants (see the above photo). These eggs develop into larvae within a few days to a few weeks, depending on the environmental factors and the type of mite. Instead of eight legs, larvae have just six.
The larvae spend a few days feeding on the host plant before developing into eight-legged nymphs. After a few more days of feeding, these nymphs enter their second stage. This nymph feeds once more for a few days before maturing into an adult.
There may be a trend here; the mites move quickly through each step of their life cycle. This means that they can develop from an egg to an adult in as little as one week, and before you know it, you may be dealing with an infestation! It is significant to remember that spider mite populations grow more slowly in cooler, wetter climates.
Although the majority of spider mite species flourish in warm climates, they persist in colder climates as well. Spider mites survive the winter as eggs or latent adults.
Now that we know where these pests originate, we can address it. Spider mites may seem to appear overnight, yet they might have been around your plants all along. However, numbers don’t become apparent till the weather is agreeable.
Additionally, they might have arrived on infected plant matter, personnel clothing, or shoes. Even the wind itself can carry them in!
How can I prevent spider mites from infesting my outside plants?
During dry weather, continuously watering your plants will help keep spider mites at bay. Spider mites tend to avoid damp environments, therefore healthy plants will not only be better able to repel attacks.
Keep fertilization to a minimum during the warm months, especially if using synthetic fertilizers with high nitrogen levels, as spider mites also like sensitive new growth.
Cover plants with floating row covers when possible (as in the produce garden) and spritz with insecticidal soap to keep spider mites under control.
If you have a major spider mite infestation, remove the spider mites during your fall yard cleanup since they can overwinter in weeds, fallen leaves, and other debris.
In what way do spider mites infest plants?
The spider’s life cycle may consist of five stages:
- Egg
- Larva
- Protonymph
- Deutonymph
- Adult
Stage of the Egg – The adult female starts the cycle by immediately depositing her eggs on the underside of a plant’s leaves. In general, 100 eggs are laid by spider mites in batches of roughly 20 eggs each over the course of up to three weeks.
The eggs will still hatch as males even if a male doesn’t show up to fertilize them. It will hatch as a female if the eggs are fertilized. This is caused by the men’ haploid nature and the females’ diploid nature, which refers to the number of chromosomal sets in each.
Due to natural infertility, there are typically 3 male offspring for every female egg.
Stage I: Larvae are born immediately onto their food source, thus they don’t waste any time starting to feed. Three pairs of legs are visible after the larva hatches from the egg.
These six legs are used by them to move around the plant and start eating, which affects the color of their bodies. Additionally, they get two distinct dark spots on their backs as their pigment naturally darkens.
The larva rests during the protonymph stage, which is a stage of growth. When they are not moving around, they use less energy so that they can expand to have two more legs and the ability to spin webs.
They’ll start eating again at this point, only to take another break.
Stage of the deutonymph – During this second inactive phase, the protonymph can develop into the deutonymph, a bigger intermediate stage. To enable this massive increase, their tough exterior is molted (shed off).
They will then resume eating after continuing to add to the creation of the protective silk webbing.
Eventually, the deutonymph rests once more, molts once more, and changes into an adult. Its final hue will depend on the plant from which it grew up and got its energy. The female can now start depositing eggs to complete the cycle.
The egg may hatch in as little as three days, and by day five, it will be sexually mature. For a total growth span of 14 days, the transition from the larva to adult stage can take as little as 10 days.
A month and a half is added to the adult’s existing life, giving them a total of two to four weeks.
Can spider mite damage to plants be repaired?
Have you ever had plants in your garden that were gorgeous before going bad? Perhaps you saw patches of withered or decomposed foliage or clusters of tiny white dots spreading across the leaves of your plant. Perhaps, like me when I was a beginning gardener, you witnessed entire plants decimated in a matter of weeks before realizing too late that they had been ravaged by a spider mite infestation.
You probably understand what I’m talking about if you’ve ever had to deal with spider mites in your garden. Even so, you may have thought to yourself, “Can my plants recover from this?
I have some good news for you as someone who has spent a decent amount of time combating spider mites and studying what works best when it comes to controlling these garden pests:
If adequate time and care are given to both treatment and prevention, plants can recover from spider mite infestations. Spider mite populations can be significantly reduced while plants are being treated with insecticidal soap and oil sprays, giving plants time to recover.
So, the good news is that. The caveat is that it won’t be simple to get rid of spider mites from your plants. If you follow the four-step procedure I’ve outlined below, you’ll be well on your way to eradicating your plants of spider mites, though it will frequently take at least two weeks of concentrated effort, careful attention, and a regular fertilizer program.
