I personally like to begin by tying the band just an inch or two below the top of the pot, but as the plants become longer and bushier, I tie down the top of the extended shoot and make a hole halfway down the pot to truly expose the entire lower branch.
A very bushy plant with a dense inner canopy of sturdy lower branches will result from using this strategy with 10 to 20 side branches. As you can see from the photographs, this strategy has very favorable effects on the main stem and side branches. The plant responds by growing thick and chunky to sustain itself and get ready for the huge harvests that will come.
The moment to think about super-cropping those tied-down branches is when the original top section of the plant can no longer be distinguished in the bush of twisted stems and elastic bands. This will truly give the plant some additional support and thick green golf ball-sized knuckles.
Super Cropping And Snapping Stems

Time To F.I.M
This is the final action you must take to justify the entire tying down process. Get a fresh pair of scissors, and cut off seventy percent of the top leaves. This causes the main growing tip to actively slow down, and the plant will then concentrate its energy on the lower growth until the remaining 30% of the severed tip develops appropriately once more with the rest of the plants. If you’re wondering why it’s called F.I.M., it stands for Flip I Missed, meaning that the top leaves were originally supposed to be completely removed, resulting in two new shoots rather than one.
Gently remove the 70% or as much of the remaining leaf matter as you can if you circle to the top of each tied-down limb. For only about a week, you are reducing the rate of top growth, and during this time, you will really notice the inner, tiny shoots beginning to dominate the canopy.
One Week Later
You will notice the significant effect that the tying down, snapping, and fimming have had on the plants within a few days. The eventual size of the canopy will depend on how much you continue to stretch and tie down. It might be massive or monstrous. Of course, not everyone has the luxury of growing large-scale plants outdoors, so they must exercise some discretion and adhere to their nation’s rules.
Two Weeks later
In order to see what has established as permanent hardwood and what can be removed with your fingers when you peer down into the lower portions of the stems and branches, you should remove any new lower growth and concentrate on clearing out the lowest parts.
