Prickly pears don’t need to be pruned, but they can be trimmed back. To keep the pads’ size and shape, take out individual ones as necessary. Propagation:
Since seeds grow slowly at first, it can take your plant three to four years to begin blooming and bearing fruit. The seeds should be maintained moist until they begin to sprout since they require shade.
Pad propagation is considerably easier and produces results more quickly. This is how:

In fact, we’ve noticed that over the winter, they will sink till they reach the water table before rotting off and rising back to the drier portions of the soil, which also tends to correspond with the depth at which you modified your soil to make it more quickly draining.
As a result, they will spend the first few weeks of spring establishing new roots before beginning to grow new branches. This cycle occurs every year, and if your soil hasn’t been modified deeply enough, the cactus will finally collapse.

These cacti are frequently found for sale grafted onto other, hardier cactus stock due to their extremely slow growth and difficulty growing when young on their own roots. However, once established on their own roots, they can survive for a very long time as long as very careful watering is maintained and a very gritty, well-draining soil is used.
HOW TO TAKE CARE OF
LIGHT:
Aztekium, like the majority of cacti, requires bright light and some sunshine to grow healthily, but these cacti prefer to be shielded from very strong midday sunlight and prefer more shade than many other types of Desert Cacti. Aztekium would be best positioned where they can get either very early morning or very late afternoon sunshine.
WATERING:
It is best to hydrate these cacti with clean rainfall since Aztekium need soft water that is not alkaline. As harsh, alkaline water might harm the roots, it is better to avoid watering these cacti with water that has a pH greater than 7. Check that the pH level in tap water is not higher than 7, and then let it stay for 24 hours to allow chlorine and other gases to escape.
The pH of the water is less of an issue if you are growing Aztekium that have been grafted because the majority of the cacti used for grafting Aztekium are Trichocereus or Pereskioposis, and these cacti are less sensitive to the PH of the water. However, all Aztekium cacti still require careful watering.
Aztekium should be watered from spring through summer, but only after the dirt in their containers has completely dried up.
Water should not be added to Aztekium during their winter rest phase. When their active growing season resumes in the spring, water should be added.
SOIL:
Especially for Aztekium cacti that are growing on their own roots, especially when they are young as they can be very prone to rot, the soil used for Aztekium must be extremely well draining. This is why they are frequently seen grafted. As with all cacti, with the exception of the epiphytes, the more well-draining the soil, the better. If grafted onto hardier root stock such as Pereskioposis and Trichocereus, they are significantly less likely to rot and grow faster.
Despite the fact that some growers of Aztekium prefer to add lie to the soil, I have had success cultivating this cactus for over 23 years with the well-draining soil mixture I use for the majority of my arid-loving cacti.
These cacti demand a very well-draining, grittier soil, therefore stay away from peat and houseplant soils.
FEEDING:
Feed Aztekium with a high-quality cactus fertilizer once a month from spring to mid-summer. It is better to use the fertilizer at half the strength that is recommended for typical cacti because these cacti develop so slowly.
FLOWERING:
When the plant is mature, which can take several years, tiny blooms that are white, pink, or lilac in color emerge from the top of the cactus.

Although patience is undoubtedly a virtue when growing cacti, I haven’t seen flowers on my Aztekium in 23 years, but I have heard of many growers who have seen flowers on their Aztekiums in as little as 10 years.
TEMPERATURE:
Aztekium can withstand high temperatures in the spring and summer, but they must be sheltered from intense heat and direct midday sunlight, especially if they are grown in glasshouses or on windowsills. They also prefer to have lots of ventilation.
It is advisable to keep Aztekium cool and dry above 5 Celsius/41 Fahrenheit during the winter.
PROPAGATION:
Aztekium is propagated via seeds that are very dust-like, however while having a high initial germination rate, many seedlings frequently die within the first few months after germination. Growing Aztekium from seeds is also highly tough and slow.
I haven’t personally tried to grow these from seed, but when my Aztekium flowers for the first time in the future and I get seed, I’ll definitely give it a shot. It’s a fantastic and distinctive little cactus.
