On shrubs that were damaged last year, spray new leaves with fungicide every 10 to 14 days. As new leaves sprout on the plant and develop, spray them. When the little leaves are still in the whorl and wrapped around the flower buds, the symptoms appear on plants. Other species have shown these signs as well. Dr. Bill Miller of Cornell University was a co-author of a research that revealed a Ca deficit as the cause of necrosis on ‘Stargazer’ lilies (Fig.6). They discovered that the flower bud was a greater sink (had a higher need for Ca) than the leaves that surrounded it. Ca flows straight to the flower buds, bypassing the surrounding leaves. As a result, a Ca limiting scenario develops, resulting in leaf cell death. When zinnias are grown in the summer in hot and humid conditions, the same problems can arise. While the development is still in the whorl, leaf tip necrosis develops on the wrapper leaves around the flower bud (Fig. 7). At three grower locations, we noticed leaf tip burn on newly expanding hydrangea leaves. A sample of tissue from the leaf’s outer margin was obtained and examined for Ca content, which was determined to be low. Pink and white hydrangeas prefer a pH of 5.8 to 6.2 in their substrate. Blue hydrangeas prefer a lower pH range of 5.2 to 5.5. As a result, a smaller amount of lime is usually added to the substrate to keep it acidic. This also implies that the hydrangea plant is receiving less calcium. Most calcium-based fertilizers are also basic, so they should be avoided to avoid raising the pH of the substrate. If Ca does not present naturally in the irrigation water, the plants will get moderately low quantities of Ca, making deficient circumstances more likely. High humidity in the greenhouse during flower bud formation may worsen calcium shortage symptoms on young growing leaves. The lack of plant transpiration inhibits Ca uptake from the substrate via mass flow in these conditions. Reduced transpiration reduces the amount of accessible Ca, resulting in leaf tip burn around the growing flower bud. Promoting air flow in the greenhouse, in addition to providing appropriate Ca in the range of 50 to 100 ppm, will help avoid this environmentally induced shortfall. Using horizontal flow fans or performing an air exchange to release the humidity can help increase air flow.
How do you treat fungus on hydrangea leaves?
