Phalaenopsis, often known as the “moth orchid,” is one of the longest-blooming orchid genera, with flowers that last anywhere from 2 to 6 months before dropping! Once a full size is achieved, phalaenopsis has been known to bloom twice or three times every year. Cut the stem immediately above the node where the first blossom bloomed after it has flowered for the first time. Within two months, a new blossom stalk should grow from the top node. If you don’t get a reaction or the flower spike goes brown, clip it off near the plant’s base where it first appeared.
How do you get a moth orchid to bloom again?
Place the orchid in a temperature range of 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and above 60 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Temperatures around 55 degrees Fahrenheit at night for several weeks enable the plant to rebloom.
How often do moth orchids flower?
- In the winter, watering should be reduced because they loathe having cold, wet roots. Don’t allow the roots of moth orchids lie in water because they require excellent drainage.
- Moth orchids can bloom several times per year, sometimes on the same flowering stem. After flowering, prune the flower spike to just above the second node (bump on the stem) from the base to encourage additional flowers.
- A new branch with flower buds will then sprout from that location. The spike can get heavy as the flowers grow, and it may need to be supported.
- Don’t throw away the stakes and peg clips that come with the plants because they’ll come in handy when new flower spikes grow.
- Apply water underneath the foliage when watering to avoid water pooling on the leaves or crown of the plant (which can encourage disease).
- You can place your potted moth orchid on a saucer filled with pebbles and water it on a regular basis.
- This produces a more humid atmosphere surrounding the orchid yet prevents the roots from sitting in water all of the time.
Do moth orchids rebloom?
Phalaenopsis (moth orchids) are among the most straightforward orchids to grow. Blooms can last for several months and can be rebloomed with little care. Some people, at least, can. I’ve had no luck getting another bloom, as evidenced by the shelf of non-blooming phalaenopsis. To be honest, I’m a little embarrassed. What can I do to get my orchids to blossom once more?

A careful grower will be required to keep this plant alive for several decades. However, there are a few simple steps you can take to help it last longer.
How long does it take for orchids to rebloom?
The process of getting a Phalaenopsis orchid to rebloom begins as soon as the previous bloom fades, which can happen at any time. Your plant can rebloom every three to six months if you follow the right routine.
How often do you water moth orchids?
Morning watering with room-temperature water is recommended for moth orchids, as this allows them to dry before nightfall. Because moth orchids lack pseudobulbs that would make them drought-tolerant, the potting material should never dry entirely. Watering twice a week is normally necessary during hot, dry summers, but if winter is damp, you can reduce this to once every ten days. When watering, give the pot a good soak but then let it drip for a few minutes to avoid waterlogging.
How do you deadhead a moth orchid?
It’s a thrill to see your Phalaenopsis orchid produce lovely blossoms. The blossoms will eventually fade, even if they can last for months. Dead flowers not only detract from the aesthetic of your Phal, but they can also spread disease to other parts of the plant and surrounding plants. To remove dead blossoms from your orchid, follow these steps:
- Before you begin removing a faded blossom from your Phalaenopsis orchid, double-check that it is truly dead. It’s time to remove the flower spike if it’s drooping and discolored, and the edges have become brownish. On a stem-like spike, many orchids have several blooms. Because blooms typically open from the bottom bud, the first symptoms of fading should be detected on blossoms near the bottom of the flower spike.
- A dead flower on your Phal can be removed simply cutting it off with a sharp pair of scissors. Check to see if the scissors have been thoroughly sterilized.
- Cut the stem of the dead flower where it connects to the flower spike with the blades of the scissors. To get a sharp cut, cut quickly.
- Remove the severed flower and dispose of it in the garbage to avoid spreading illness to the plant or other neighboring plants.
- If you want to preserve the blossoms attached as long as possible, it’s also fine to let them fall off naturally.
- Cut the spike about half an inch above a node to start reblooming. In two or three months, more blooms may arise from this node.
