Aphids are small green crawlers; mealybugs are white, cottony growths that jump when disturbed; and scale insects reside in plated shells. They can also influence the central nervous system at greater doses.
Kalanchoe poisoning is a dangerous ailment that, if not treated promptly, can be fatal. Cardenolides and bufadienolides, both cardiac glycoside poisons related to digitalis, are poisonous principles found in the kalanchoe plant. These glycosides can be found in every component of the kalanchoe plant, including the water in the vase or container where your kalanchoe is kept. The blossoms, on the other hand, are the most poisonous since they have the largest concentration of cardiac glycosides. If your dog consumes any part of the kalanchoe, it can disrupt the body’s capacity to regulate electrolytes, resulting in an irregular heart rate, convulsions, and even death. Kalanchoe ingestion affects the gastrointestinal system and nervous system in addition to cardiac problems. If your dog has eaten any part of a kalanchoe plant, it is a life-threatening emergency that should be treated promptly by a veterinarian.
How toxic is Kalanchoe?
The genus Kalanchoe has 150 to 200 plant species, the majority of which are found in southern Africa, Madagascar, and Australia. The genus Kalanchoe was once separated into three genera: Bryophyllum, Kitchingia, and Kalanchoe. However, most botanists now classify it as a single genus. 1 Kalanchoe species are mostly ornamentals and houseplants in the United States, but some have escaped cultivation and can be found in the wild, particularly in Florida and Hawaii. The most common Kalanchoe species in North America are listed in Table 1.
Plant characteristics
Despite the fact that the plants differ, the majority of Kalanchoe species are erect, growing shrubs (Figure 1). The foliage of these perennials is often dense, green, and succulent, with clusters of tiny flowers (Figures 2 & 3). Florists love the plants because they can be coaxed to bloom at any time of year, particularly during the holidays. The flowers of Kalanchoe species come in a variety of colors, but the most frequent are red, yellow, pink, orange, and white. Flower clusters can remain for weeks or months, depending on the plant. Leaf or stem cuttings are easy to propagate in most Kalanchoe species. Plantlets (miniature plants at the end of flowering stems) sprout in the notches of the leaf edges of many species, and these plantlets are so numerous that they occasionally escape into the wild.

Toxicity
Animals are poisoned by cardiac glycosides found in Kalanchoe species. Cattle and sheep poisonings are widespread in South Africa and Australia, where these plants grow wild. 2-4 Because the flowers contain a far larger quantity of glycosides than the stems, leaves, or roots, toxicosis occurs largely during the summer months. 2 Although the hazardous dose of Kalanchoe species in small animals is unknown, the lethal dose in calves is believed to be 7 grams of flowers per kilogram of body weight or 40 grams of leaves per kilogram of body weight. 2,3 Because Kalanchoe species are not often found in pastures in the United States, they pose little harm to livestock. However, because the plants are utilized in landscaping and kept as houseplants, domestic pets such as dogs, cats, and birds are at risk.

Why is my kalanchoe turning black?
If your kalanchoe is falling leaves, it could be a sign of a bacterial or fungal infection. The fungus Thielaviopsis root rot, sometimes known as black root rot, produces badly damaged roots and restricted plant growth. The stem of an infected kalanchoe may be dark or have a black longitudinal crack. According to the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program, the illness is more likely to occur under damp conditions and cool temperatures in the range of 55 to 61 degrees Fahrenheit. Benzimidazole fungicides are an efficient soil treatment alternative, however if your kalanchoe has seriously rotting roots, the rotted plant material should be discarded.
Why do kalanchoe leaves turn yellow?
Zinc insufficiency is a problem for Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, which is exacerbated by excessive phosphorus levels in the soil. Yellowing of leaves between veins, as well as curling, withering, and leaf deformation, are all signs of zinc deficiency. Zinc deficiency in Kalanchoe can result in fasciation, which is a highly branching, flattened stem. Kalanchoe requires a soil pH of 6.0 to 6.5 or a rich growing medium of equal parts peat and perlite to reduce the risk of zinc deficiency.
Why is my kalanchoe growing aerial roots?

In search of soil
If your succulent anticipates a part of itself that hasn’t previously come into contact with soil touching down soon, it will frequently begin developing aerial roots in preparation.
When plantlets arise, as we stated in the opening to this paragraph, or when dealing with a species that grows in a creeping manner, this is an example.
In addition, even under normal conditions, a succulent’s stems may be unable to support the weight of its (healthy) leaves, leading them to bend down and the plant to grow aerial roots in case it needs to anchor itself soon.
In search of water
If your succulent is frequently drying out, it may frequently produce aerial roots in an attempt to absorb more water.
As previously stated, aerial roots may collect moisture in the same way as normal roots can: the only difference is that they absorb it from the air.
Consider whether you’re watering your succulent enough if the leaves appear to be shriveling and aerial roots sprout.
Seasonal, lighting, and temperature changes may necessitate a change in your watering plan, so you’ll need to assess whether it’s time to raise the amount of moisture you’re delivering.
Succulents thrive in dry environments, but they require more water when planted in a closed container than some might assume.
Some may need to be watered every couple of days at the peak of the sunny season in areas with strong sun and warm summers!
Do deer eat lupines?
If you’re having trouble producing lupines from seed, it’s possible that you reside in an area where excessive moisture causes fungal disease, or that you’re not scarifying the seeds properly. You could possibly have a thick soil that needs to be built up with plenty of sandy loam before planting. To flower successfully, lupines require good drainage, plenty of sun, and a chilly spring.
Consider starting your seeds in trays outside and transplanting when the plants are larger if you’re having trouble getting them started due to the ravages of birds and/or pill bugs (two of the worst pests for lupines). You should be able to transplant them into a tiny hole filled with identical soil to the growing media as long as you haven’t allowed them to become too root-bound.
Lupines are deer-resistant once established and growing vigorously, making them an excellent choice for gardens without fencing. They’re popular with kids because they attract a lot of pollinators in the late spring and early summer, and they’re plants that urge young hands to touch the foliage and flowers.
