When should I sow the seeds for Ice?
Seeds for ice plants can be sown early indoors and moved outside after a frost.
Sowing Seed Indoors:
- 4-6 weeks before to the last frost, sow.
- Seeds require sunshine to germinate, so press them firmly into the soil without covering. As soil, use a seed-starting mix.
- Up to germination, keep moist.
- In 15 to 20 days, seedlings appear.
- As soon as seedlings appear, give them lots of light on a sunny windowsill or grow them 3–4 inches beneath 16–hour-per-day fluorescent plant lights that are off for eight hours at night. As the plants get taller, turn up the lights. Because they will become too hot, incandescent bulbs will not function in this process. Do not leave lights on continuously for 24 hours; most plants need a time of darkness to flourish.
- Seedlings don’t require a lot of fertilizer; feed them when they are 3–4 weeks old with a starter solution (half the strength of an indoor plant food), as directed by the manufacturer.
- Seedling plants must be “hardened off” before being planted in the garden. By relocating young plants to a protected area outside for a week, you can acclimate them to outside circumstances. At first, be sure to shield them from the wind and the light. If frost is expected at night, cover or bring pots inside; then, in the morning, reintroduce them to the outdoors. The plant’s cell structure is toughened during the hardening off process, which also lessens transplant shock and scorching.
Introducing Plants to the Garden:
- Choose a position with full sun and sandy, well-drained soil after all threat of frost has passed.
- Turn the dirt under to a depth of 6 to 12 inches, remove any debris, and lightly rake the soil as level as you can to prepare the bed.
- To lessen transplant shock, plant during gloomy weather or in the late afternoon.

How to Grow

Ice Plant Growing Instructions

Can ice plants endure the winter?
Delosperma, a succulent perennial ground cover with daisy-like flowers, is known as the hardy ice plant. The reason the ice plant is called an ice plant—rather than because it can withstand freezing temperatures—is because its blossoms and foliage appear to be sparkling with frost or ice crystals. The plants eventually reach heights of 3 to 6 inches (7.5 to 15 cm) and widths of 2 to 4 feet (0.5 to 1 m).

It is true that snails enjoy and consume the invasive South African species known as ice plant (Carpobrotus edulis), which is not native to the area. Since they are invasive, Mr. Smarty Plants’ initial response is to let them eat them all up! However, you undoubtedly enjoy your ice plants, and the snails are presumably also consuming more appetizing plants. You didn’t do anything wrong when you planted them; the snails naturally liked them. However, you can manage the snails with a little work. You can combine a number of techniques to regulate them as effectively as possible. You can hand-pick them, set up barriers around the regions where your plants are located, or use easy traps baited with beer or yeast and water. Your chances of success are higher when you combine different strategies. When it settles in a place, it creates a massive, dense mat that suffocates all other native plants and changes the soil’s chemical composition.
My ice plants keep dying; why?
When the soil absorbs rain but drains quickly, becoming dry to a depth of 12 inches, dry, arid conditions result. Every seven to ten days, deeply water the ice plant, taking into account any rainfall or particularly dry or mild weather conditions. So that the root ball is completely saturated, water the soil to a depth of at least 7 to 12 inches. The plant will wilt and die if not given enough water. The plant requires water if withering is seen. Too much water applied too frequently will prevent the ice plant’s roots from receiving enough oxygen, resulting in root or stem rot, wilting, and death. Before a freeze, avoid watering the ice plant because the extra moisture could cause it to freeze and perish. The state of the plant needs to be checked on a daily basis.
