Ice plant seeds should be directly sown in the soil in the late fall since they require sunshine to germinate. This is especially important for spring planting. This seed can also be started indoors six to eight weeks prior to planting in the spring; after the last chance of frost, move the seedlings outside.
Growing: Provide seedlings with water until they are well-established, but avoid overwatering. Saving Seeds: Seed pods will form after the blooms have faded. Harvest the pods as soon as they are dry and have turned a reddish brown tint. To get the seeds out, crack open the pods. Ice plant seeds should be kept in a cool, dry area.
How are plant seeds harvested?

- Place the flower head’s mature seeds on wax paper after collecting them.
- Give the seeds about a week to dry.

- Put seeds in a sealed envelope. Keep in a cold, dry area, in an airtight container.
- In the spring, sow the seeds. They can be planted right away in the garden or you can start them indoors early to get a head start on the growing season.
How do you take ice plant cuttings?
The easiest succulents to grow inside are ice plants. In fact, if you let them grow on their own, they will begin to spontaneously form new clumps as they expand across the ground. These aggregates eventually grow into new plants with fully formed roots and branches. However, you don’t want to allow them to spread naturally. You want to be in command and maintain control over everything.
So how can you multiply Ice plants? Ice plants can be propagated using either cuttings or seeds. The easiest way to multiply plants is by taking cuttings, which just require that you remove a portion of the plant’s stem, give it time to calluse, and then insert it into a potting mixture with good drainage. You must scatter seeds on succulent soil that drains well and then expose them to lots of light so they may germinate. The seeds won’t germinate if you cover them with soil.

Is it necessary to deadhead ice plants?

But shrewd seed savers keep an eye out for extraordinary plants throughout the growing season if they wish to improve their current plants or develop something new.
What is a unique plant? I seek for larger (or possibly smaller) flowers, superior disease resistance, or plants that are stronger than typical while selecting flowers. I’m looking for vegetable plants with traits like early cropping, summer bolt resistance, cold tolerance, higher yields, disease resistance, or better-tasting fruits. To help me remember which plants have been chosen for seed saving, I mark any possible plants with colorful yarn, labeled twist ties, or plastic bread tags.
It’s time to start gathering seeds when the fruits are at the correct level of ripeness. Seeds are either “wet” or “dry” collected. Cucumber, tomato, squash, and melons all have seeds that are collected when the fruit is overripe and wet. Before the seeds can be dried and stored, they may require a quick water rinse or a brief fermentation, depending on the species. Conversely, plants that produce dry seeds produce seedpods. These plants include calendula, marigolds, dill, coriander, beans, peas, and poppy.
How are seeds gathered and kept?
Look for healthy plants with the traits you want when gathering seeds in your garden. For example, if you have a pot marigold (Calendula) that has a lovely pale apricot hue, try saving seeds from the paler individuals to preserve the attractive hue. There will always be diversity, but since you are essentially an amateur breeder, you are taking part in the selection process.
Always pick healthy plants to ensure that the seeds you produce are healthy and viable. Collecting seeds from F1 hybrids is a waste of effort because they will never germinate and will produce unexpected results. On the other hand, heirloom cultivars have a tendency to be fairly stable and are great for collecting.
When to Collect the Seeds
Once the flower or veggie has begun to ripen, gather the seeds from your garden. The seed heads on flowers will begin to oxidize and turn brown. It is best to gather your seeds on a dry day because you will need to dry them before storing them, so it is best to start early to prevent rot.
Avoid gathering young seeds at all costs. Despite the fact that many seeds will continue to ripen as they dry, if you harvest them before they are fully developed, they won’t mature and produce healthy seed. They ought to be completely developed and beginning to dry.

There are certain exceptions to this temporal norm. For example, many seeds are thrown into the air or the inflorescence, or seed head, breaks to aid in effective seed dispersal in the wild. Cleaning and Drying
Other seeds contain chaff or are in fleshy fruit, and it is vital to brush off these seeds so they will germinate properly. Some seeds simply need a minimum amount of cleaning. Using a pair of tweezers, it is possible to separate the seeds from the chaff (seed casings and other detritus); the chaff only needs to be wiped off slightly.
Making a deep crease through the middle of a piece of paper will let you easily distinguish between the chaff and the seeds. To slowly release the contents of the folded paper, place the filthy seeds in the center, tilt the paper slightly, and tap it slowly (very similar to what you do when sowing seeds). When the contents divide, the heavier things will slide down the crease more quickly than the lighter ones. The chaff will fall out first if the grains are lighter and the heavier seeds will glide out first. The best course of action is to find a screen that lets the seeds fall through but collects larger pieces of detritus; an old tea strainer or colander works great in this situation.
The process of separating the seeds from the chaff generally involves placing seedpods in an old pillowcase and stepping on them to release the seeds. Alternatively, you might put the pods in a bag and smash them with a rolling pin.
Scoop off the seeds from fleshy fruits, wash them, and then soak them in water. After being cleansed, take the seeds out of the water and pat them dry using paper towels. To remove the fleshy layer, many people who are serious about collecting tomato seeds ferment the seeds (refer to the tab “Cleaning Tomato Seeds at the top of this page).
Spread the seeds out and let them dry for one to three weeks on newspapers, in a box, or inside an old phone book.
Storing Seeds
Make sure your seeds are dry before storing them; otherwise, they will rot. However, don’t dry out the seed because it is living; instead, just remove any extra moisture and keep it dormant until you’re ready to plant it.
When storing seeds, provide the complete opposite of what they require to germinate: a dry, cool, dark environment. Put your seeds in a paper bag or envelope and store them in glass jars or plastic containers. Remove the airtight container step if you are unsure that your seeds are dry. Keep the labels with the seeds, don’t forget.
The back of a refrigerator, a corner shelf in the garage, a cellar, or a closet are all suitable places to keep the seed. The range of 32F and 50F is good for storing seeds. The general rule for preserving seeds is that the sum of the temperature and humidity should be less than 100%. This indicates that if the temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the humidity must be lower than 50%. High temperatures and high humidity both promote germination and start the metabolism of the seeds.
How quickly does ice plant propagate?
If they reside in an environment that is too cold, the Ice Plant is prone to extinction. Fortunately, if you live indoors, you won’t have to worry about them growing back under these circumstances.

What are ice plants used for in the winter?
Before winter, let your ice plant dry off so that it isn’t languishing in overly moist soil. If snow cover is anticipated in your region, mulch the ice plant with straw or another dry mulch to keep it dry throughout the winter.

These are among the most helpful plants in dry bed planting schemes, pots, and rockeries, despite being one of the easiest plants to produce.
The most giving and generous of flowers, they grow like crazy during the spring rain, then burst into bloom at the first sign of summer light, filling the gardens with vivid, zingy hot pinks, reds, oranges, yellows, and whites.
The blossoms continue to develop after the exuberant flowering is finished, turning brown and producing seed heads that are quickly sucked up by the subsequent copious growth. They will continue to grow throughout the hot months, forming broad, ground-covering clumps.
However, this is also their biggest drawback as a plant, as they can spread a little too widely if not controlled and can look a mess in the summer as the excess new growth wilts back unless the plant is watered. Left to their own devices, they’ll rampage across an area in no time, growing in everything but rubble.
Experience has taught us to let them flower before severely pruning them back or completely removing them, preventing the need for watering once the heat is turned on. We typically pot on new plants in May so they are ready to be planted outside in the fall.
After the major spring flowering time, when the plants are cut back or replaced with new ones, it is frequently worthwhile to take cuttings because the center of the plants can turn a little woody as they age.
The little cutting in the pictures is the same size as the large pink clump in the picture was at this time last year, just to give you an idea of how widespread they are. This pink cluster, which has grown for a year, is roughly 80 cm by 60 cm.

Simply cut a piece off with roots on the bottom, plant it in almost any sort of soil, either in a pot or the ground, and watch it grow.
Take as much as you want, it’s a wretched nuisance, I have to cut it back every year,…” is usually the response to a hesitant “could I possibly take a little piece off the end of that plant,” and the next thing you know, the neighbor will be back out with a bin bag and a pair of cutters, glad to see you take away as much as you want.
Some of these are a little “juicier” than others, but don’t worry, treat them the same as the examples with more wood; just remove the extra growth with a little more ruthlessness.
The key is to avoid becoming overly ambitious and trying to acquire a large plant right away. The appearance of roots will take around 3 weeks, but once they have formed, the plant will grow swiftly, so pick strong cuttings right once.
We typically choose “wood” that is still relatively young and fresh, but that has “gone hard,” with softer and more recent new growth emerging from it. We don’t remove the “old wood” from the plant’s center.
If you study the plant closely, you’ll notice that the older wood in the center is denser and thicker, and that the branches get softer as they approach the “springy” tip. The optimal time to choose is when the wood has slightly toughened off but is still relatively young.
Pick a somewhat harder piece to plant because cuttings from the sappy new growth are more prone to rot off.
Cut off the blooms and any seed heads, get rid of any extra growth, and only leave strong, healthy new shoots. Be brutal because this new plant needs to put out roots first and doesn’t want to struggle trying to maintain a lot of top growth. Cut the main stem just below the point where the leaves were growing on it, then pinch out the tips of the branches.
At club meetings, we refer to these as “junctions” because this is the point at which the plant can send out branches or roots.
In order to give the stem several areas from which to send out roots, we strive to bury at least two or three of these crucial tiny junctions below the soil.
Until the plant begins to show indications of growth, water it sparingly and keep it in a shaded location out of the sun. This usually indicates that you have a root system when it occurs. Since they often occur 95% of the time, there is no need to fret over them. Use a good-sized pot so the plant can stay in a pot until the heat has cooled down and can be planted out in the fall. Allow the compost to be slightly damp but not wet. Try to avoid full on sun until you’ve formed a root system.
