The researchers grew the plants under light/dark cycles and then studied them to identify which genes were active at certain times of the day in order to learn what adaptations in Wolffia’s genome account for its rapid development. (The light and dark cycle controls most plants’ growth, with the majority of growth occuring in the morning.)

In contrast to other plants, Wolffia has surprisingly fewer genes that are controlled by light/dark cycles, according to Michael. ” We believe this is the cause of its rapid growth. It lacks the rules that restrict when it can grow.

Additionally, the researchers discovered that there are no genes linked to other crucial aspects of plant behaviour, such as defence systems and root growth. According to Michael, this plant has largely lost the genes it doesn’t require. It appears to have changed over time to mainly emphasise unchecked, rapid expansion.

HHMI Investigator and Professor Joseph Ecker, who is also the director of Salk’s Genomic Analysis Laboratory and a coauthor of the paper, adds that information on the Wolffia genome can offer significant insight into the interactions between how plants establish their body plans and how they grow. “This plant has the potential to develop into a new lab model for research into the key elements of plant behaviour, including how genes influence various biological processes.

Learning how to create new plants from the ground up so they may be optimised for particular behaviours is one of Michael’s lab’s main goals. The latest work adds to our understanding of fundamental plant biology and has the potential to enhance agriculture and crops. Scientists can improve plants to help combat the threat of climate change by enhancing their ability to store carbon from the atmosphere in their roots, a strategy developed by Salk’s Harnessing Plants Initiative.
