Dusty leaves on plants with water stress are attractive to spider mites. By regularly wiping off soiled leaves and making sure your plant receives the proper amount of water, you can deter them. Periodically utilising a leaf shine is another option.
2. MAINTAIN HUMIDITY
Maintaining a humid environment surrounding your plants is a wonderful strategy to prevent spider mites from settling on your plant because they prefer a dry environment. Use a humidifier in the space, spritz your plants occasionally, or place a pitcher of water nearby to evaporate. Additionally, you may try incorporating peat moss into your soil and using a translucent curtain to exclude direct sunlight from your plant.

Before treating your plant, make sure spider mites are indeed present. Frequently, mite damage is not apparent until entire mite colonies have disappeared. To check for creepy crawlies, which may appear as tiny moving spots on a sheet of plain white paper, try shaking some leaves that you suspect may contain spider mites over the paper. You can also check the webbing closely for movement.
Pruning and isolation
When you find spider mites on a plant, the first thing you should do is isolate it from other plants. You can try to remove any apparent webbing by pruning out the affected areas and carefully discarding them. Treat the remainder of the plant using one or more of the techniques listed below. Prior to moving the plant, don’t forget to clean and sanitise the area, and wash your hands afterwards.
2. APPLY PLANT-BASED MITICIDES BY SPRAYING
Purchase various commercially available miticides that work by using natural components while protecting the plant. Before spraying the entire plant, make sure to test your spray on a leaf first. Pro Tip: To prevent the spider mites from developing an immunity to the substance you are spraying, switch it up occasionally. A quick selection of potent sprays is provided below:
- Pyrethrum: This miticide, which is derived from a chrysanthemum related, is the finest to start with. Keep an eye on your plant after spraying because some mite species may develop a resistance to it.
- Cinnamite: This non-hazardous pesticide is made from cinnamon oil. Although it is efficient in killing adult spider mites, it won’t kill the eggs. To make sure you get them all, spritz this one on your plant every three days over a few weeks.
- Neem oil: Neem oil works well to get rid of any form of bug. It is made from the nuts of the Neem evergreen tree and will not only solve your current issue but also act as a repellent for future pests. Neem oil needs to be applied again and again because it takes some time to have action.
- Rosemary oil: Because it is non-toxic to people, you will need to dilute rosemary oil with water before using it as a treatment for spider mites, especially on plants and herbs that you intend to harvest and eat later.
3. MAKE HERBAL TEA MITICIDE ON YOUR OWN
I could die for this tea. In a quart of water, combine 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of ground cloves, and 2 tablespoons of Italian seasoning. Once the water is at a boil, turn off the heat. Add 2 tablespoons of freshly crushed garlic once it has slightly cooled. After cooling off, strain. Pour a little dish soap into your mixture and then add it to a spray pot. Spray your homemade miticide on the underside of the leaves every third day for a few weeks after thoroughly shaking it.
4. USE HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS WISELY
If you don’t want to purchase expensive miticides or make your own, you can easily use what you already have at home in the kitchen or medical cabinet:
- Rubbing alcohol: To spray on your plant or physically wipe off the leaves, combine rubbing alcohol and water. Try a mixture of 1 part alcohol to 3 parts water for sensitive plants and 1 part alcohol to 1 part water for hardier plants.
- Dish soap solution: Fill a spray bottle or a bucket with 1 litre of warm water and 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap, and thoroughly mix the mixture before using it to wash the plant using a towel or sponge. For optimal results, reapply frequently.
5. STRONG MITES
Don’t want to cope with frequently reapplying sprays? Buying predatory mites that feed on spider mites, releasing them onto your plant, and letting them handle the rest is a one-step approach that, while it may frighten some plant parents, is a foolproof way to get rid of spider mites. The predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis is one kind that can help with this. Ladybugs, lacewings, and other insects can also be used to complete the task.
Note: If you choose this route, stay away from pesticides and miticides that could harm both good and harmful mites! Try rosemary oil instead; it won’t damage the beneficial mites.
6. SHOWER DOWN YOUR PLANT
Regularly hosing down your plant using a handheld shower nozzle and room temperature water, paying great attention to the underside of leaves in particular, is one technique to combat mites. After the mites are gone, giving your plant a periodic shower can help ward against additional pests from settling in.
7. POSSIBLE LOSSE CUTTING
Everyone doesn’t want to lose their beloved plants, but if you’ve tried everything and the mites are still there, you might think about removing the infected plants and starting over after properly cleaning the space they were in.

Can spider mite damage to plants be repaired?
Have you ever had plants in your garden that were gorgeous before going bad? Perhaps you saw patches of withered or decomposed foliage or clusters of tiny white dots spreading across the leaves of your plant. Perhaps, like me when I was a beginning gardener, you witnessed entire plants decimated in a matter of weeks before realising too late that they had been ravaged by a spider mite infestation.
You probably understand what I’m talking about if you’ve ever had to deal with spider mites in your garden. Even so, you may have thought to yourself, “Can my plants recover from this?
I have some good news for you as someone who has spent a decent amount of time combating spider mites and studying what works best when it comes to controlling these garden pests:
If adequate time and care are given to both treatment and prevention, plants can recover from spider mite infestations. Spider mite populations can be significantly reduced while plants are being treated with insecticidal soap and oil sprays, giving plants time to recover.
So, the good news is that. The caveat is that it won’t be simple to get rid of spider mites from your plants. If you follow the four-step procedure I’ve outlined below, you’ll be well on your way to eradicating your plants of spider mites, though it will frequently take at least two weeks of concentrated effort, careful attention, and a regular fertiliser programme.
I don’t know how I got spider mites.
Your shoes, clothing, the fur on your pets, and, most crucially, other diseased plants are all possible entry points for spider mites into your home. Spider mites are cunning tiny parasites that can invade your home and plants from a variety of places. Because of their small size, they frequently go unnoticed by the naked sight and are only discovered after it is too late.
What method gets rid of spider mites on plants the quickest?
Plant cleaning. Spider mites that are visible can be eliminated by using an alcohol and water solution. Pour a solution containing 1 cup of alcohol and 30 ounces of water into the spray container. Spray the leaves thoroughly on both sides, then use a paper towel to dry them off.
How can spider mites on indoor plants be removed?

You can get rid of the mites and protect your other plants by releasing natural predators. However, you can also choose something like Spider Mite Destroyers. Ladybugs are a good option (yes, a very creative common name for the Stethorus Punctillum).
Unfortunately, even if you do choose to use less natural alternatives, typical insecticides frequently have little effect on these annoying spiders. You must employ a miticide or another substance that will especially target these insects.
Due to their propensity for thriving in hot, dry environments, it is crucial to routinely inspect your plants for mites. If at all feasible, mist your plants occasionally to keep the humidity at a manageable level (especially during winter when the heater is running). Give your plants a neem oil bath every so often to help ward against various infestations.
Should I discard the spider mite-infested plant?
Depending on the spider mite control method used, it may take a few weeks to completely eradicate the mites if your infestation isn’t severe.
If you decide to use sprays, use them once a week until the issue is resolved. Predatory insects, which can consume hundreds of mites per day, may help your spider mite problem go away more quickly.
Spider mites eat the cells of numerous plant species. They enjoy outdoor plants including fruit trees, melons, strawberries, and tomatoes. Ornamental flowers and shrubs are plants that spider mites like to live in houses.

In the soil, do spider mites remain?
Spider mites begin their life cycle as microscopic eggs, which develop into larvae and eventually into adults. Spider mites mature and finish their life cycle in anywhere from five to twenty days. A spider mite adult has a four-week lifespan. Throughout their lifetime, female spider mites can lay hundreds of eggs.
Spider mites flourish and procreate quickly in hot, dry environments. A female can reach adulthood quickly and begin to lay up to 20 eggs every day. There may be several overlapping generations in a severe spider mite plant infestation.
In general, potting soil is not a home for spider mites. They favour the underside of leaves where they can hide for weeks without being seen. However, because spider mites prefer dry environments, keeping the soil just a little bit moist can help control them.
Keep the soil moist but not soggy or too damp by using the best houseplant watering techniques; otherwise, problems will arise.
Which plants are most vulnerable to spider mites?
I’ve written a lot about spider mites over the past few months in an effort to help other gardeners who are struggling with these minuscule pests by imparting the knowledge I’ve gained over the years.
They feel both necessary and inevitable, which is one of the reasons I’m so intrigued in them: Every gardener I am aware of—from beginners to experts—has at some point had to deal with a spider mite infestation. If you haven’t already, you’ll probably run into them in the years to come.
Surprisingly, spider mites were originally a relatively obscure annoyance, as I’ve mentioned in this essay about where spider mites come from. However, as the global economy has grown over the past century, they have quickly spread over the world, adapting to new environments and climatic conditions while also becoming resistant to the numerous pesticides that were created to eradicate them.
Spider mites will consume the cellular components of literally hundreds of different plant species, from fruits and vegetables to flowers, shrubs, and trees, in pursuit of chlorophyll, their main food supply. Cucumbers, eggplants, melons, peas, squash, tomatoes, and strawberries are some of their favourite garden plants.
I began to consider how I might make my garden more spider-mite resistant after having so many encounters with them. This prompted me to consider the following two questions:
How can spider mites be permanently removed?
Indoor and outdoor gardens can be quickly destroyed by these tiny sucking pests. Here is a quick and natural technique to get rid of spider mites.
Numerous spider mite species, which are widespread in North America and belong to the Tetranychidae family, attack both indoor and outdoor plants. In greenhouses, they can cause extremely serious damage.
Since they are related to spiders, ticks, and scorpions, spider mites are classified as an arachnid rather than an actual bug. Adults are oval-shaped, pale or reddish brown in colour, and extremely little (1/50 inch long), roughly the size of the period at the end of this sentence. Stages that are not fully developed resemble adults but are smaller.
The majority of the time on the underside of leaves, mites dwell in colonies and feed by penetrating leaf tissue and suckling up plant juices. Light spots that resemble feeding marks appear on the leaves. The leaves may become yellow while feeding continues, dry out, and eventually fall off.
In hot, dry climates, particularly when their natural enemies have been eliminated by the use of insecticides, spider mites are most prevalent. Predators of the great majority of plant-feeding mites are among the numerous species that are widespread in North America. They are also exceedingly prolific, which accounts for the fact that severe infestations frequently develop undetected before plants exhibit harm.
Fine webbing frequently accompanies large populations. Strawberries, melons, beans, tomatoes, eggplant, decorative flowers, trees, and the majority of houseplants are among the numerous host plants.
Life Cycle
On the leaves and bark of their host plants, the majority of mite species overwinter as eggs. Tiny six-legged larvae begin hatching in the early spring as the temperature rises. They feed for a few days before looking for cover, when they moult into the first nymphal stage. Eight-legged nymphs go through two more moults before maturing into adults.
Females continuously generate up to 300 eggs over the course of a few weeks after mating. The rapid development of these pests is encouraged by hot, dry weather. Under these circumstances, it may only take 5 days for an egg to develop into an adult. Each year, there are numerous overlapping generations.
Spider mites can ride the wind. They spread out over a vast area when the breezes carry their webbing. Infested plants must be carefully contained and disposed of.
Damage
Spider mites that are nearly invisible enter our plants undetected. No matter how few, each one survives by consuming plant cells’ contents. Large infestations leave behind physical harm. The earliest patterns on leaves are stipplings or little dots. They could become discoloured, curl, or fall off. The tight webs that grow under leaves and along stems are evidence of mite activity.
According to the Integrated Pest Management website of the University of California Agricultural and Natural Resources division, mites can cause the following kinds of harm:
- Loss of leaves on annual vegetable crops, such as squash, melons, and watermelons, can significantly reduce productivity and cause sunburn.
- Spider mites can directly harm crops like sugar peas and beans when the afflicted pods are present.
- Mites on ornamentals are mainly an aesthetic issue, but if populations get very high on annual plants, they can actually harm plants. Spider mites are another significant pest of roses growing in fields.
How to Control
By destroying the beneficial insects that hunt on spider mites, chemical pesticide use in fact promotes their spread. Additionally, mites are known to quickly adapt their resistance to different insecticides. These factors make it crucial to use efficient natural and organic approaches to control mites.
- Pruning plant portions that are infected way past any webbing, such as leaves and stems, and discarding them in the trash (and not in compost piles). To stop the mites from spreading to nearby plants, don’t be afraid to pluck up entire plants.
- Wash plants with a powerful jet of water with the Bug Blaster to eradicate pests.
- Natural enemies that can be purchased commercially include predatory mites, lacewings, and ladybugs. Releases should be made when pest populations are low to medium for best outcomes.
- Nuke Em, a relatively new organic insecticide with components of the highest food quality, eliminates the majority of indoor gardening pests quickly, whether they are in their egg, larval, or adult stages. The best part is that it accomplishes this without leaving a substance on the leaves that can affect flavour.
- A powerful biological insecticide called BotaniGard ES contains Beauveria bassiana, an entomopathogenic fungus that kills seven resistant forms of a broad list of difficult crop pests. Applications made on a weekly basis can stop insect population expansions and offer protection on par with or better than that offered by traditional chemical pesticides.
- To kill insect eggs indoors and stop their reproductive cycle, combine Pure Neem Oil with Coco-Wet and apply once every three to five days. Be sure to spray the undersides of all plant parts, including the leaves. Wait at least six hours before turning on the lights and DO NOT apply in temperatures that are higher than 90 F.
- Use a short-lived, least toxic insecticide (such as Doktor Doom Foggers or Take Down Spray) to minimise infestations if populations are high, and then release predatory mites to maintain control.
