For small to medium sized potted plants, soaking them in soapy water is a terrific idea, but I have a few that are too big for this approach. I thus use a modified version instead.
I use soapy water to wash the plant’s leaves and stem (using the same mild liquid soap I use to soak plants), and then I thoroughly rinse it with the garden hose.

In general, houseplants need a humidity level that is comparable to their ideal growing environment. Since air plants (of the genus Tillandsia) draw all of their moisture from the air, they need to be misted often using a spray bottle. Proper airflow is essential for healthy plants since condensation that remains on leaves for an extended period of time can be detrimental for other houseplants. By circulating the air around your indoor plants using a fan, you can get rid of extra moisture and keep dust from collecting on the leaves.
- 3. Make sure your indoor plants receive the proper quantity of light. Although all plants require light energy for photosynthesis, the amount of light needed varies depending on the type of houseplant. The majority of indoor plants require indirect light as opposed to direct light, with the exception of desert cactus and other succulents. Plants that need bright light but not direct sunlight do best a few feet away from south-facing windows, whereas houseplants that prefer indirect light do well next to west-facing windows. Plants like the ZZ plant, snake plant, pothos, and philodendron may grow in north and east-facing windows and thrive in low-light, especially shaded environments. Some indoor houseplants require artificial lighting to grow, particularly in the winter and in places with shorter daylight hours. You must invest in fluorescent or LED grow lights, which feature full-spectrum bulbs that give a balance of cool and warm light to match the natural solar spectrum because regular household light bulbs are ineffective at lighting indoor plants.
- 4. Choose the appropriate potting soil. By offering the perfect ratio of nutrition, aeration, and water absorption, high-quality potting soil will aid in the growth of plant roots. Peat moss, finely chopped pine bark, perlite, and vermiculite are frequently found in potting soil mixtures. Garden centers provide generic potting soils, but if at all possible, go with one made specifically for your houseplant. For instance, although succulents thrive in porous, sandy soils, orchids and bromeliads need quick-draining soil.

You can move the plant into a bigger pot after it outgrows its current one. Due of their light weight, plastic pots are perfect for use in wall shelves or hanging baskets. Terra cotta pots are bulkier than plastic ones, and because of their porous nature, they don’t hold water as well. Ensure that the bottom of your pot has a drainage hole.
- Use fertilizer to provide nutrients, as in 6. Refill the nutrients in the potting soil on a regular basis to promote sustained, healthy indoor plant growth. Generally speaking, fertilize your indoor plants once a month when they are expanding or blooming. It’s fine to cut back on or stop using fertilizer throughout the winter when plants tend to remain dormant. Keep in mind that these are only guidelines; particular plants may call for a different fertilizer schedule or type.
When you initially bring your plants home, what do you do with them?

- Put your plant in quarantine. When you get it home, quarantine it for a few days before replanting it with your other plants, advises Satch. “Don’t worry if it isn’t by a window; they can tolerate that kind of light environment, but only for a few days before they start dropping leaves.”

Knowing when to bring houseplants indoors and how to bring plants indoors without pests are two things that can help you prevent major issues with your plants later on.
It’s crucial to follow a few simple instructions to make the transition comfortable for both you and your plants, and to keep bugs and other indoor pests out of your home.
When should I move my plants inside for the winter? is one of the most often asked topics. Plan to begin bringing your indoor plants back several weeks before the fall’s cooler weather arrives.
Long-term exposure to cold temperatures may cause indoor plants to lose their leaves. Or even worse, it might destroy the plant. Furthermore, if they are left outside for too long when the weather begins to cool down in the fall, the transition of bringing outside plants indoors will come as more of a shock to them.
The best time to bring indoor plants inside for the winter is at least two weeks before the typical last frost date in your area.
We advise bringing indoor plants back in tiny batches if you have a lot of indoor plants that are flourishing outside.
It can be quite frustrating and draining for you to attempt a marathon weekend of debugging and plant relocation (not to mention taxing on your back!).
Additionally, before bringing a houseplant inside if you find it to be pot-bound, repot it into a bigger container. The mess will remain outside in this manner.

When potted indoor plants are outside, aphids, mealybugs, and other sorts of houseplant insect pests are typically not an issue. However, if they are carried inside on your houseplants over the winter, they can soon grow into a serious infestation.

Before bringing your indoor plants back inside in the fall, there are a few easy actions you can do to make sure they are bug-free. (Warning: Only debug plants that are growing in pots with drainage holes using this technique.)
Materials required:

- scrub brush for flower pots

Step 1: Pour soapy water into the tub. Add some mild liquid soap and a few squirts of water to a big tub or bucket. Make sure to avoid using any soaps that include detergents or degreasers in them. Sensitive plants may be harmed (or even killed) by them.
Step 2: Submerge the plants in water to soak them.
Put the entire plant, pot, and all, in the tub of water for 15 to 20 minutes to get rid of any bugs on houseplants. Any insects that are on the plant or in the soil will be killed by the soapy water.
Cleaning plant leaves that aren’t immersed is step three.
Use an organic insecticidal soap to clean the plant leaves that are poking out of the water if any of the leaves aren’t entirely submerged in the water.
Advice: Dead leaves, insects, and other debris will float to the top of the water when you submerge the plants. In order to keep your plants tidy when removing them, use a strainer to catch all the floating debris you can.
Step 4: Take out the plants and clean the containers.
Pull your plants out of the tub after soaking them, then scrub each pot with a scrub brush to make it clean.

Step 6: Permit the water to fully drain.

Naturally, killing all the insects is the biggest advantage of soaking houseplants in soapy water before bringing them back inside, but there are a few others as well.
The benefit of using this method for disinfecting and cleaning potted plants is that your indoor plants will now receive a thorough watering before you bring them inside again. This means that once your houseplants are inside, you won’t need to take the extra step of watering them all.
The dead leaves and other debris will all float to the surface, making it simple to discard, which is an additional advantage of soaking plants in water.

How should plants be prepared for relocation?

BEFORE YOUR MOVE
To prepare your plants for relocating so they can withstand changes in their environment without withering or breaking, follow these instructions:
- three weeks before the actual move. Plants should be repotted from clay pots into equivalent-sized, shatterproof plastic containers.
- two weeks before the actual move. With your thumb and forefinger, pinch back younger growth on larger plants while you remove dead leaves, branches, and blossoms with scissors or gardening shears. Plants that have been pruned will be more manageable and transportable. After your move, it will also produce gorgeous, bushy, healthy plants. Never cut down ferns or succulents (e.g., cactus, jade plants, aloe).
- one week before the actual move. Verify plants for parasites and insects. Apply pesticides with caution and according to label instructions. Have a plan for donating or disposing of any pesticides before relocating since they are on our list of prohibited products.
- two days before the actual move. Regularly water your plants, being careful not to overwater. In cold weather, too much water can cause plants to freeze, while in warm weather, it can encourage the growth of fungi.
MOVING DAY
Pack your plants the night before or the morning of your relocation to get ready. Following are some moving plant packing tips:
- Wrap. To stop branches from breaking, wrap big plants in tissue paper or an old bed sheet.
- Position. A box should fit each pot tightly at the bottom. Use standard moving boxes, such as dish packs, that are offered by your Atlas mover.
- Pack. If required, lay paper around the pot’s base in the box to keep it in place. To allow plants to breathe, poke holes in the box’s sides and loosely fasten the lid.
- Label. Mark the top and sides of the boxes using a sharpie. This will lessen the chance of their accidently being loaded onto the moving truck.
- Control. Ensure that the inside of your car is at a comfortable temperature. Your plants might suffer from extreme cold or heat.
ONCE YOU’RE HOME
It’s crucial to restore your plants to the state they were in at your former residence once you’ve settled into your new one. This is how:
- Unpack. Plants should be unpacked as soon as feasible. To avoid breaking, remove the plants through the bottom of the box.
- Place. Repot plants in containers that are the same size as the ones you had before moving.
- Stabilize. Plants should not be moved until they have acclimated.
