  • Bringing Home a New Plant – When buying a new plant, keep an investigative watch on it. Check it thoroughly for indications of infestation. Insects may not always be visible if they are still in the early stages of development, but every time you find one, you avoid bringing it home.
  • Contaminated Soil – It’s crucial to store unused potting soil in an airtight container to prevent pests from settling in the soil and accidentally infecting your houseplants when you repot them.
  • Bringing Plants Inside and Outside – It’s the first gorgeous Spring day, and you want to give your plants a break from their wintertime confinement by letting them enjoy some time outside. Nothing inherently wrong with this situation. Just be sure to inspect your houseplants for bugs and treat them before bringing them back inside.
  • Produce and Cut Flowers – Regrettably, we have no control over the treatment of the plants that produce or cut flowers come from. This implies that they might have a pest problem. Again, research is essential. Also, wash all produce well as soon as you bring it into the house.

Mealybugs

However, you can begin watering the soil with a solution of 1 teaspoon Pine-Sol to 2 quarts water if you’ve found that fungus gnats are residing there. The gnats may take a few weeks to disappear, but this strategy does work. Sticky strips that you can lay on top of the soil are also an option if you don’t like the scent of Pine-Sol. Scale

These objects don’t even resemble bugs. They resemble unassuming lumps that could be mistaken for growth flaws on any portion of a plant. until the entire plant is covered in them, that is. Although one of the most difficult bugs to get rid of, there is still hope. While early stage scale infestations can be controlled with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab, the best course of action for scale is to act as though it’s the greatest pest infestation you’ve ever seen because it soon will be. Your best bet in this situation is an oil-based insecticidal spray, such Neem oil. Neem kills scale insects by suffocating them to death, and that’s what you want, right? Neem is non-toxic to people and dogs.

Spider Mites

The terrible spider mite, ahh. You initially assume you’re just neglecting to dust since you notice what appear to be cobwebs on your houseplants. Surprise! That is a spider mite making a damaging web on one of your helpful plants. These are also tenacious pests that can be challenging to totally get rid of, but it is possible. You need to quarantine this infection and keep it away from other plants. Some claim that a soap mixture containing insecticides may kill spider mites, but I advise against wasting your effort. Straightaway reach for the Neem oil (which every owner of houseplants should always have on hand), thoroughly treat the plant, rinse off any webbing and dead insects, spray again, and restrict that plant to its own room. We plant lovers don’t want to witness plants being harmed by pests. The problem enters our homes, which is gross, therefore we especially don’t want to see pests in our houseplants! The good news is that compared to many other pests, these plant flies cause significantly less harm, and even better, they’re rather simple to get rid of.

Long legs, transparent wings, and a preference for nutrient-rich, damp soils are characteristics of fungus gnats. These little flies may be seen flying around plant containers, but unlike some more dangerous pests, you won’t observe them actually chewing on the plant’s foliage. However, you will see them in the soil, feeding on the organic matter and hairs from plant roots. Do not underestimate the damage that these bugs can still do if not addressed.

Even though adult fungus gnats only live for about a week, they can have a big impact in that short time by producing up to 300 eggs under the correct circumstances. With such a quick turnaround and a brief life cycle of about 3–4 weeks, populations can grow incredibly quickly.

It’s rather simple to tell if your plant has a fungus gnat issue. Since these plant flies can’t fly very well, they usually stay rather near to the plant. They’ll probably be moving in zigzag patterns while you watch them. It’s typical to witness all the different phases of this bug at once because they reproduce so quickly. It’s likely that some bugs still in their larval stage will be visible if you gently agitate the soil. Fortunately, most fungus gnat populations may be controlled and eliminated naturally provided they are discovered and dealt with in a timely manner. Remember that one plant container can hold three to four generations of bugs, so you’ll probably need to apply your favorite approach more than once. Gnats in your indoor plants can be managed in the following ways:

Do not overwater. Before watering your indoor plants, allow the top couple of inches of soil to dry up. This will not only stop fungus gnats from deciding that your plant would make the best place for them to live, but it will also interfere with their reproductive cycle and assist to reduce populations that have already moved in.

Activate sticky traps. Not just for mice, either! Sticky traps are easy fixes for many pest issues. Gnats that are moving will be caught if you place them immediately on the soil’s surface.
