2. MAINTAIN HUMIDITY
Maintaining a humid environment surrounding your plants is a wonderful strategy to prevent spider mites from settling on your plant because they prefer a dry environment. Use a humidifier in the space, spritz your plants occasionally, or place a pitcher of water nearby to evaporate. Additionally, you may try incorporating peat moss into your soil and using a translucent curtain to exclude direct sunlight from your plant.

Before treating your plant, make sure spider mites are indeed present. Frequently, mite damage is not apparent until entire mite colonies have disappeared. To check for creepy crawlies, which may appear as tiny moving spots on a sheet of plain white paper, try shaking some leaves that you suspect may contain spider mites over the paper. You can also check the webbing closely for movement.
Pruning and isolation
When you find spider mites on a plant, the first thing you should do is isolate it from other plants. You can try to remove any apparent webbing by pruning out the affected areas and carefully discarding them. Treat the remainder of the plant using one or more of the techniques listed below. Prior to moving the plant, don’t forget to clean and sanitize the area, and wash your hands afterward.
2. APPLY PLANT-BASED MITICIDES BY SPRAYING
Purchase various commercially available miticides that work by using natural components while protecting the plant. Before spraying the entire plant, make sure to test your spray on a leaf first. Pro Tip: To prevent the spider mites from developing an immunity to the substance you are spraying, switch it up occasionally. A quick selection of potent sprays is provided below:
- Pyrethrum: This miticide, which is derived from a chrysanthemum related, is the finest to start with. Keep an eye on your plant after spraying because some mite species may develop a resistance to it.
- Cinnamite: This non-hazardous pesticide is made from cinnamon oil. Although it is efficient in killing adult spider mites, it won’t kill the eggs. To make sure you get them all, spritz this one on your plant every three days over a few weeks.
- Neem oil: Neem oil works well to get rid of any form of bug. It is made from the nuts of the Neem evergreen tree and will not only solve your current issue but also act as a repellent for future pests. Neem oil needs to be applied again and again because it takes some time to have action.
- Rosemary oil: Because it is non-toxic to people, you will need to dilute rosemary oil with water before using it as a treatment for spider mites, especially on plants and herbs that you intend to harvest and eat later.
3. MAKE HERBAL TEA MITICIDE ON YOUR OWN
I could die for this tea. In a quart of water, combine 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of ground cloves, and 2 tablespoons of Italian seasoning. Once the water is at a boil, turn off the heat. Add 2 tablespoons of freshly crushed garlic once it has slightly cooled. After cooling off, strain. Pour a little dish soap into your mixture and then add it to a spray pot. Spray your homemade miticide on the underside of the leaves every third day for a few weeks after thoroughly shaking it.
4. USE HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS WISELY
If you don’t want to purchase expensive miticides or make your own, you can easily use what you already have at home in the kitchen or medical cabinet:
- Rubbing alcohol: To spray on your plant or physically wipe off the leaves, combine rubbing alcohol and water. Try a mixture of 1 part alcohol to 3 parts water for sensitive plants and 1 part alcohol to 1 part water for hardier plants.
- Dish soap solution: Fill a spray bottle or a bucket with 1 liter of warm water and 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap, and thoroughly mix the mixture before using it to wash the plant using a towel or sponge. For optimal results, reapply frequently.
5. STRONG MITES
Don’t want to cope with frequently reapplying sprays? Buying predatory mites that feed on spider mites, releasing them onto your plant, and letting them handle the rest is a one-step approach that, while it may frighten some plant parents, is a foolproof way to get rid of spider mites. The predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis is one kind that can help with this. Ladybugs, lacewings, and other insects can also be used to complete the task.
Note: If you choose this route, stay away from pesticides and miticides that could harm both good and harmful mites! Try rosemary oil instead; it won’t damage the beneficial mites.
6. SHOWER DOWN YOUR PLANT
Regularly hosing down your plant using a handheld shower nozzle and room temperature water, paying great attention to the underside of leaves in particular, is one technique to combat mites. After the mites are gone, giving your plant a periodic shower can help ward against additional pests from settling in.

Everyone doesn’t want to lose their beloved plants, but if you’ve tried everything and the mites are still there, you might think about removing the infected plants and starting over after properly cleaning the space they were in.

Why do indoor plants get spider mites?
The majority of spider mite species like hot, dry weather. As you might have suspected, drought-related spider mite infections are common. Spider mites are more prone to cause problems for underwatered plants in indoor growing spaces.

How do I get rid of spider mites on my indoor plants?
Houseplants are frequently attacked by spider mites. Low humidity, warm, dry conditions are what they favor. Chlorotic patches or a stippled appearance on plant leaves are signs of feeding damage. There might also be webbing. Fortunately, they are relatively simple to manage.
The two-spotted spider mite is the type of spider mite most frequently observed on indoor plants. The adult is about 1/50 of an inch long, with eight legs, and an oval-shaped body. The body is typically practically transparent or greenish, though it can sometimes be brown or orange-red. Its body features two dark markings that can be seen with a 10X to 15X magnification tool. Insects are not spider mites. They are an arachnid and resemble ticks and spiders in many ways.
If your indoor plants have spider mites, you might want to consider removing them from healthy plants and putting them in a cooler environment. Maintain a moist but not excessively saturated soil. Watering indoor plants when the top half inch of soil feels dry is a good general rule. If done frequently, wiping plant leaves with a soft cloth or vigorously spraying it with warm water might help lower the spider mite population. Plants can be treated with an insecticide containing permethrin or pyrethrin as another alternative for control. Horticultural oil and insecticidal soap both work well. Always carefully read the label before purchasing and again before using a pesticide. This is particularly crucial because the availability and advised use of particular pesticides can vary from year to year. Any pesticide’s label is the final word on how to use it legally.
The best method of control is to dispose of the plant if the infestation is severe and the majority of it is covered in spider mites. Before removing the plant, cover it with a plastic bag to help stop spider mites from spreading to other houseplants. Keep newly acquired indoor plants separate from other indoor plants for a few weeks to avoid further infections. Before putting the plants with the rest of your healthy plants, use this opportunity to check for any pest issues.
Why are spider mites kept at bay?
Let’s be clear right away: A garden with nutrient-rich, well-watered soil and thriving plants offers the best protection against these small insects. This is the best natural spider mite repellent. However, whether you have a garden like this or not, there are some plant species that exhibit observably repelling characteristics.
Chinese parsley, chrysanthemums, dill, garlic, leeks, lemongrass, peppermint, and rosemary are the main plants that repel spider mites. Gardeners who advocate companion planting and those who favor using organic, home-made sprays in place of chemical insecticides both praise these plants.
You’ll notice that these plants, with the exception of chrysanthemums (which I’ve mentioned above), are mostly herbs and root vegetables, and they are all rather pungent. Although I haven’t come across any studies examining the precise mechanisms by which these plants deter spider mites, it makes sense that their odoriferous characteristics play a significant role in this ability.

Can plants be misted to ward off spider mites?
One of the greatest ways to prevent spider mite pests is to maintain humidity around your plants because spider mites prefer dry environments. To keep your plants hydrated, make sure they receive the right amount of water.
Regular misting of indoor plants can help keep spider mites at bay. In order to maintain a high level of humidity around your plants, you could also consider leaving a container of water close by or using a humidifier.
If your home is very dry, I advise investing in a cheap indoor humidity sensor so you can make sure the air isn’t too dry around your houseplants.
To get rid of even more spider mites and their eggs, you can clip off badly affected leaves and dispose of them in addition to cleaning and spraying the plant.
Ensure that you dispose of the infected leaves in the outside trash can! However, avoid removing every leaf from your plant.
Should I discard the spider mite-infested plant?
Depending on the spider mite management method used, it may take a few weeks to entirely eradicate the mites if your infestation isn’t severe.
If you decide to use sprays, use them once a week until the issue is resolved. Predatory insects, which may consume hundreds of mites every day, may help your spider mite problem go away more rapidly.
Spider mites eat the cells of numerous plant species. They enjoy outdoor plants including fruit trees, melons, strawberries, and tomatoes. Ornamental flowers and shrubs are plants that spider mites like to live in houses.
You can put the entire plant in a bag and throw it away with the garbage if these houseplant pests are out of control. It is an efficient, long-lasting method of eliminating spider mites. Eliminating the infected plant also stops the mites from spreading to one of your other indoor plants.
Despite having a brief lifespan, they reproduce quickly, so the sooner you can get them under control, the better. Females begin laying eggs at just 5 days old, depositing a few hundred of them throughout the course of their three- to four-week lives. It only takes these eggs 72 hours to hatch.
Spider mites are not dangerous to people, but they could be fatal to plants.

Are there spider mites in the soil?
Spider mites will infest both the soil and the plants in your garden if the earth is dry, as it has been recently in most gardens in Guelph. It can be tempting to apply a pesticide to the soil to quickly eradicate spider mites, but doing so would be a serious rookie error.
Millions of living things inhabit the soil, many of which are advantageous to the mites and even act as predators. You kill the good with the evil when you cover the ground in insecticide. In fact, this can have the reverse effect of what you wanted because the mites will suddenly have less predators, which will allow their populations to grow even more uncontrollably.
The spider mite’s nemesis is moisture in the soil. To make the soil uninhabitable for mites, keep the plants close to infected soil well hydrated with cold water. On the other side, your plants will be grateful.
What destroys the eggs and spider mites themselves?
Spider mites (Tetranychidae) are a frequent pest of a wide variety of outdoor crops, such as berries, ornamentals, vines, many fruit trees, hemp, and cannabis. The Tetranychus genus contains a large number of spider mite subspecies, such as the Pacific Spider Mite, Two-Spotted Spider Mite, and Strawberry Spider Mite. Some species are easier to identify than others, but because their biology, damage, and management strategies are similar or the same, it is usually not required to do so.
Spider mite populations can expand quickly in the correct environments (warm with little wind being their preference), and they can be recognized by the distinctive webbing they leave on plant leaves. Unfortunately, it could be challenging to regulate the population by the time you notice webbing. Spider mites go through five phases of development: egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and adult.
- Eggs Overwinter in regions that offer refuge, such as behind bark and in piles of discarded leaves. They can be discovered on the undersides of leaves during the growing season. Usually, the eggs hatch after three days.
- After the final frost has passed, larvae begin to hatch and have six legs. By this point, feeding is minimal.
- Although significantly smaller and unable to procreate, nymphs resemble adults in appearance. Proto-nymph and deuto-nymph are the two nymphal phases.
- AdultSpider mites have eight legs and are around 0.4 mm long. They can range in color from from yellow to green or orange to brown. Over the course of their lifetime, females produce between 50 and 100 eggs, with fertilized eggs developing into females and unfertilized eggs developing into males.
Temperature is the main environmental factor that affects how long a spider mite’s life cycle takes, and this variability is quite large. They are therefore most active outside during the summer. A generation can be finished in less than a week if the circumstances are right.
Spider mites harm foliage by sucking out the juices from the leaves. Stippling on the leaves indicates this, and more severe damage might cause leaf bronzing, which may cause leaf drop. Leaf drop has a negative impact on both the vegetative and blooming stages and increases the likelihood of sun/light damage. Curled and/or scorched leaf edges, as well as leaves that have a leathery appearance, are additional indicators of spider mites. When mite populations increase in size, webbing will be made and can be seen on leaves, twigs, and fruit/buds.
Manage & Control:
Sanitation – Thoroughly sanitize the area where you’re growing. This include cleaning the growing area’s surfaces, choosing organic soil types, and checking plants for mites before planting. Before continuing, take out any webbing.
Optimize the growing conditions for the crop being grown and the environment being cultivated. This is known as cultural control and prevention. Reduce water and nutritional stress as much as you can to lessen mite damage. To improve nutrient and water absorption, feeding schedules can be supplemented with Therm X-70. Any measure you can take to support your plants during hot weather will aid in reducing the mite population.
Knockdown & Chemical Control – If permitted, organic knockdown sprays should be used to treat spider mite populations that are already present. Neem oil, pyrethrins, azadirachtin, and horticultural oil are examples of naturally produced miticidal sprays that can be used to kill adult mites, larvae, nymphs, and eggs immediately upon contact. Apply until control is attained to active spider mite infestations at 3-day intervals. To lower egg populations, horticultural oils can also be applied to overwintering locations. Applying oil-based sprays to plants at high temperatures (>80) or under bright lights should be done with caution. Using miticides during the growth’s flowering stage should only be a last resort. Instead, use biological means of control (see below).
Biological control is the best method for preventing spider mites during flowering. After eliminating spider mites, beneficial insects should be introduced to maintain control. In conjunction with other integrated pest management strategies, match your growth conditions to the mite predator’s ideal conditions and release times.
