Although repotting your plants may seem difficult, we have some advice to help you succeed.
First things first: repotting refers to replacing the soil or potting mix, not necessarily the planter that it is now in. The nutrients in new soil are new. This is fantastic news if you adore your present planter, but it’s also okay if you want to get a new one or your plant has clearly outgrown its existing container. Try to choose a planter that is no more than 2″ larger in diameter for tabletop planters and no more than 4″ larger in diameter for floor planters when choosing a new one. Your new container might just need to be an inch larger if you’re repotting a really tiny plant! The size of your plant’s new home is crucial because we tend to give it more water in larger planters. Small plant in large planter with loads of soil and water results in unintentional dying. You want to give your plant some additional room to expand in the coming months rather than drowning it in soil.
Repotting should be done on average every 12 to 18 months, depending on how quickly the plant is developing. Some slow-growing plants, like cactus, can live for years in the same pot with only a soil resupply. The best time to repot your houseplants is typically in the spring, at the beginning of the growing season.
If you notice one or more of these indicators, you’ll know it’s time to report:
1. The grow pot or planter’s drainage hole(s) are being penetrated by roots 2. The plant’s roots are almost pushing it out of the planter. 3. The plant’s growth is significantly slower than usual (different than winter dormancy) 4. The plant is quite top-heavy and is prone to falling over. 5. The potting soil dries out the plant faster than before, necessitating more frequent waterings. 6. The plant’s foliage is larger than its present planter by more than three times. 7. The plant or planter has a pronounced salt and mineral buildup 8. You haven’t repotted your plant in more than a year.
What you’ll need on hand is as follows:

1. Take the plant out of the pot or planter it is currently in. 2. Take the roots out. Use your hands to gently loosen the plant’s roots. Make sure to keep the thicker roots at the base of the leaves and cut any extra-long threadlike roots. Unbind the roots as much as you can and give them a trim if your plant is root-bound (the roots are growing in very small circles around the base of the plant).
3. Get rid of the old potting soil Remove at least a third of the old potting soil that is encircling the plant’s roots. You should give your plant new potting soil or mix because as it grew, it may have consumed all or part of the nutrients in the old mixture.
4. Include fresh potting soil Fresh potting soil should be added to the empty planter, and it should be packed down to eliminate any air pockets. Before adding the potting mix, layer the bottom of the planter with lava rocks or something comparable (rocks, gravel, etc.) if it has a drainage hole. The idea is to carve out areas for the additional water to collect in and flow away from the roots of your plant.
5. Include a plant. Make sure your plant is centered before placing it on top of the newly added layer of soil in the planter. Then, pour extra potting soil all around the plant to secure it. You want the roots to have room to breathe, so avoid packing the planter with too much soil.
Water and pleasure. The potting soil should be evened out, then water well. It’s important to remember that a plant that has just been re-potted doesn’t require fertilizer.
Do plant pots used indoors require a hole in the bottom?
Plant roots don’t prefer to stay in water, with the exception of a few aquatic species. They must exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen with the surrounding air, because too much water seals up the soil’s air spaces. Without drainage holes, plants in containers are more likely to become overwatered. The soil at the bottom of the pot may be drenched with water even if the soil surface appears to be dry.
Root rot, a dangerous ailment that can quickly kill your plants, can result from waterlogged soil. Yellow leaves, wilted leaves that don’t recover after watering, and leaf drop are symptoms of root rot. The roots of the plant may be sticky, mushy, or black or brown if you take it out of the container.
To avoid salt buildup in the potting soil, it’s also important to make sure that pots have enough holes. Salts in fertilizers and tap water can damage plants. Some of the salts are excreted by plant roots along with the water, and over time, these salts build up in the soil. Salts are flushed out of the soil when you water deeply and allow the water to escape through the drainage holes in the bottom of the container.
Without drainage holes, salts are never eliminated from the soil; instead, they just keep accumulating, giving your plants an unhealthy environment. If salts do accumulate in your potting soil, you might notice that the plant’s leaves are becoming brown at the tips and margins or that a salt crust has formed on top of the dirt.
To prevent dripping on the furniture or floor, many homeowners store their indoor plants in saucers while they are not in use. This is acceptable, but watch out for water that may collect in the saucer and wick back into the potting soil. Make careful to frequently empty the water from each saucer. Another option is to water your plants in the kitchen sink, move them back to the saucers once they drain, and then do it again.
What do you put in a plant pot’s bottom?
You must first be aware of the precise needs of the tree or shrub you desire to pot. The quantity of room needed in the pot or planter will probably vary depending on the kind of tree or plant. Once you know how much room you need to fill, you can start.
High-quality potting soil, rather than standard garden soil, should be chosen if you only need to fill a small area. Weeds and other impurities in the soil from your garden or other places are probably preventing the growth of your plant or tree.
The purpose of potting soil is to enable proper drainage in a planter. Planters containing soil from the earth may have drainage problems, weight problems, and possible freeze-thaw problems.
Choose the best filling for your planter’s base from the list below if you have a lot of space at the bottom that has to be filled.
Ordinary houseplantsindoor plants, decorative foliage plantsshould generally be left in the original pot.
They often arrive in lightweight potting mixtures that allow for good drainage and come in plastic grow pots with drainage holes in the bottom.
Most home gardeners appear to believe that they should bring a fresh plant home, repot it into “Give the starved little thing some food and give it better soil and a bigger container. But “is not the smartest move.
Don’t be too quick to move your plants
Most houseplants are grown in greenhouses, then taken from their ideal surroundings and placed in shops until you came along. They are stressed when you bring them home. It will be more challenging to provide them with the necessary care if you transplant them into your new beautiful pot.

For at least the first year, keep your houseplants in their plastic nursery pots. By placing the new plant in its original plastic container, filling the decorative pot with dirt, and covering the top with Spanish moss or rocks to fill in any gaps, you may still utilize the attractive pot.
Repot only if they have grown so large that they are toppling over or if you are unable to adequately hydrate them. In addition, plants frequently remain in their original pot for years.

When repotting, fill the bottom of the pot with potting soil (not garden soil) to raise the plant to the desired height. You should repot a plant into a drainage pot if you purchase it in a container lacking drainage holes.
Can you keep an indoor plant in its original container?
Ordinary houseplants, indoor foliage plants, and decorative plants can be kept in their original containers for two to four months.
All of these plant varieties typically come in plastic containers with drainage holes on the bottom, and they are all planted in light potting soil with excellent drainage.
In order for it to last for a long period in the pot before being sold, slow-release fertilizer is also added.
Have those yellow or green soil balls ever caught your attention and made you wonder what they were? Osmocote, a slow-release fertilizer, is what it is. For maintaining plant health for extended periods of time, it actually works great.
Why are there no holes in plant pots?
After watering plants, excess water and moist soil frequently leak out of drainage holes for up to 24 hours. As a result, placing the planter pots on the carpet or furniture could result in stains.
To avoid stains, either move the plants outside to water them or put plastic saucers under the pots.
However, to avoid the mess and inconvenience of having to move the plants every time they require watering, many commercial plant installations, including those in offices, lobbies, restaurants, and hotels, use cachepots without drainage holes.
Since business buildings are where these cachepots are most frequently used, their interior design should match. Because of this, there is a big market for lovely pots without drainage holes.
How should a pot be prepared for planting?
In our gardens, we like to recycle, reuse, and decrease waste whenever we can. Useful tools for this include garden pots and containers. There is no reason not to use your pots from the previous year again if they are still in reasonably good condition. Now is the perfect opportunity to tidy them up if you didn’t have time to in the fall. An important part of spring garden preparation involves cleaning and sanitizing planters, pots, and containers. By doing this, you can be sure that any hidden infections that could harm your plants are eradicated.
Before planting, disinfecting pots is a relatively easy way to get ready for a productive spring garden. For around 10 minutes, soak your pots in a mix of one part bleach to nine parts water. After that, immerse them in a water and dish detergent solution.
To remove dirt or mineral deposits from clay pots, use steel wool or a wire-bristle brush. Your clay pots should be rinsed out and let to soak in clean water until you are ready to use them after you have removed all of the obstinate residue from the previous year. Clay containers have the ability to draw moisture from potting soil, which unintentionally causes your newly planted plants to become dehydrated.
When preparing your pots for planting in spring, it may be tempting to just dig some earth straight out of your garden. However, this is not the best medium.

It is a fallacy that adding a layer of gravel to the soil-filled bottom of a pot can increase drainage.
Extra water “perches or accumulates” in the soil just above the gravel rather than quickly draining into the gravel. Water builds up till there is no more room for air.
Excess water sinks into the gravel below once all the soil’s air spaces are full. Gravel at the bottom therefore does little to prevent soil above it from becoming saturated due to overwatering.
According to Growing Media for Greenhouse Production, Agricultural Extension ServicePB1618 from the University of Tennessee, Institute of Agriculture, reducing the depth of the pot actually increases water retention and reduces drainage, so adding gravel to the bottom of a pot actually has the opposite effect:
Height of the Media Column/Containers
The size of the growth container is another element that influences air/water relations in the root zone in connection to media. The amount of air and water that a given media can hold in a container depends on the height of the media column. The proportion of water to air spaces decreases with increasing column height.
This is particularly crucial in the development of plugs because poor root zone aeration results from small cells that drain very poorly or not at all.
There will always be some saturated material at the bottom of the container after drainage in all containers. This is caused by a water table that is said to be perched. The saturation zone makes up a bigger portion of the growing media’s total volume in a very small container, like a plug cell.
The sponge has a total porosity of 80% and can contain 950 ml of liquid when completely saturated.
A volume air space of 4.2 percent results from holding the sponge such that it is 2 inches high. This causes roughly 50 ml of water to drain out.
A further 125 ml drains out when it is kept at a height of 4.25 inches, leaving 14.8 percent volume air space.
A further 375 ml drains out when the sponge is raised to a height of 8.5 inches, leaving 46.5 percent of its contents as air.
The impact of container height (or sponge height) on media air space is significant when starting with the same volume of media (or sponge). We can draw the conclusion that the selection of containers, particularly for plugs, is crucial for controlling the flow of air and water through the root zone.
