Every year, I plant dozens of pots, the majority at my home but also at the business, the family cottage, and for friends and neighbors. And I still have plenty of containers left to fill.

1. GO BIG

I also think that potting soil should be changed annually, with the exception of the very bottom layer of very deep containers, where old potting soil acts more as a space filler than a location where roots could ever get to.

Since the containers on the deck are very tall, I fill the bottoms with empty, upside-down nursery pots to reduce the amount of potting mix I need to use.

3. AVOID GRAVEL

The notion of placing gravel in the bottom of pots to help drainage is one of the old-fashioned gardening tips that has been thoroughly debunked. It turns out that it slows drainage instead. It is important to completely fill containers with potting soil. On occasion, you can fill up some empty space in a fairly large container to save money on potting soil. A fake bottom with drainage holes is the ideal thing to utilize. These are incredibly useful, and I’ve seen them in hardware stores and nurseries in the past couple of years in square and circular shapes and various sizes. But if there isn’t a size or form that fits your container, those are useless.

In my experience, plastic nursery pots that have been turned upside down work well to fill up space in big containers. I use many smaller nursery pots stacked like a house of cards in the tall containers I use on the deck and a three-gallon nursery pot (again, flipped upside down) at the bottom of the very large container near the front door. When there is something occupying the space, it is vital to shake the container after adding the potting mix since you don’t want the mix to settle after you have planted.

I either use coffee filters or mesh drywall patch tape to cover the holes to keep the potting mix in the pots. I’ve even used a paper towel in a pinch. After filling the container to the top, planting it, giving it plenty of water, and waiting a day or two, I return and puncture the paper towel or coffee filter from the bottom. By this time, drainage won’t be obstructed and the soil won’t start to fall out.

This container has little feet that elevate it so there is good drainage and some airflow. Any container may be raised using virtually anything.

4. LIFT THEM UP

You are aware of such plant saucers that nurseries demand an additional fee for? Save your money if you are growing in outdoor containers and use it to create a fund for cocktail hour in the garden. The last thing you want is plants sitting in water, so those saucers are more hassle than they are worth. And, let’s face it, you know you won’t wait till a plant drains before removing the saucer to dump it. Why would you want a second job, too?

However, containers must be able to drain easily because no one wants their containers to discolor the deck, patio, or walkway where they are placed. To bring them up is the trick. Get some air moving under there! Purchase pot feet or use your imagination. Years ago, I purchased some 2-inch-high hypertufa rounds, which I continue to use to elevate pots. Old wood offcuts also function well and look good when tucked sufficiently deep to be hardly visible (just be careful not to obstruct drainage holes). When I want a pot to look like it is resting straight on the ground, I even use quarter-inch thick rubber washers from the hardware store. Water will be able to drain freely thanks to the tiny space.

5. FEED THEM (BUT DON’T OVERTHINK IT) AND WATER THEM

It’s not necessary to obsess over the watering and fertilizer schedules for containers. Containers should be watered according to the same general guidelines as other objects: it’s preferable to water deeply less frequently than a little bit more regularly. Fill up your containers with water until the bottom starts to leak. Place your finger in the dirt up to your second knuckle a day (or two) later. Rehydrate the soil if it appears to be dry.

How hot and sunny it is, how many plants are in the container, what kind of plants are in the container, the type of container (terra-cotta pots often dry up faster), how exposed to wind the container is, and how big the container all affect how frequently you will need to water (see tip No. 1). It’s normal for me to water my containers only once a week when I first plant them because the plants are little and the temperature is cooler. By August, the plants will be mature, the sun will be intense, and I will need to water the same container every day. I usually never need to water more than once a day because I use large containers, but it does happen occasionally.

To keep your pots flourishing, you’ll need to fertilize, but for the first month or two, I seldom ever apply any further fertilizer (aside from the slow-release fertilizer I mix in when I plant). The plants, in my opinion, no longer require it.

But after they start to grow significantly, I try to treat them every week to two weeks using a liquid fertilizer. Like I said, don’t overthink it; if you skip a week, they won’t care. Generally speaking, merely adhere to the fertilizer’s instructions and refrain from assuming that more fertilizer is always better than less. I won’t fertilize a container growing that is starting to appear a touch wilted because I’ve fallen behind on my watering. Instead, I thoroughly hydrate it and give it time to heal before feeding it once more. In accordance with the location and intended usage of the container, I alternate between using water soluble organic fertilizers (fish emulsion and Espoma’s liquid bloom booster are two I use) and non-organic liquid fertilizers.

Growing in pots doesn’t have to be intimidating or difficult. In fact, it’s some of the easiest and, in my opinion, most entertaining gardening you can do once you master the fundamentals.
