What is that white growth on my soil, exactly?

There is absolutely no need to worry – ‘ignore it’ is the correct advice. Mycelium is the name for this whitish deposit. It is an organic material-degrading fungus that occurs naturally. You can find it on rotting straw or woody debris in compost piles, on leafmould and manure in the soil, and on an almost endless list of other places. Since it is unlikely to be present in soil that has never had substantial organic material added, some gardens will undoubtedly have more than others.

Mycelium poses no threat to humans, animals, or plants, so there is no need to remove it.

How is dirt sanitized?

Garden soil can be sterilised at home in a number of methods. They include of heating the soil in the oven or microwave as well as steaming (with or without a pressure cooker).

Sterilizing Soil with Steam

One of the finest methods for sterilizing potting soil is steaming, which should be carried out for at least 30 minutes or until the temperature reaches 180 degrees F. (82 C.). Using a pressure cooker or not, steaming is an option.

After the earth has cooled, remove it (for both methods). Till you are ready to use it, leave the foil on.

Sterilizing Soil with an Oven

The oven can also be used to sterilize soil. Put some soil in an oven-safe container, such as a glass or metal baking pan, covered with foil, about 4 inches (10 cm) deep. Bake for at least 30 minutes, or until the soil temperature reaches 180 degrees F, with a meat (or candy) thermometer inserted in the center (82 C.). Anything above that can release poisons. Take out of the oven, let cool, and keep the foil in place until you’re ready to use it.

Sterilizing Soil with a Microwave

The microwave can also be used to sterilize soil. For the microwave, damp soil should be placed in clean, lidded quart-sized containers that are microwave-safe (no foil). On the lid, drill a few ventilation holes. For every few pounds, heat the soil for roughly 90 seconds at maximum output. Note: Larger microwaves typically have room for multiple containers. Before using, let these cool while covering the vent holes with tape.

A polypropylene bag can also be filled with 2 pounds (1 kg) of moist soil as an alternative. Place this in a microwave and leave the top open to allow for ventilation. 2 to 2 1/2 minutes of full power heating the soil (650 watt oven). Before removing the bag, seal it and give it time to cool.

How is indoor plant fungus treated?

Large, grayish-tannish spots on leaves, stems, or flowers are the most noticeable symptoms of grey mold. The fungus produces powdery, fuzzy gray spores that thrive under damp leaves, high humidity, and low temperatures. The older sections of the plant are most affected because it usually enters through a damaged stem or leaf, but it can swiftly spread and cause the areas to collapse (which looks like wrinkly, drooping, shrinking tissue).

How to handle it:

  • Remove any moldy plant components and carefully toss them away after isolating the plant. In order to prevent spreading spores, don’t forget to cleanse your hands, tools, and clothing.
  • Transfer your plant to a warmer, less humid location, and keep the area surrounding it well-ventilated.
  • On a cloudy day, properly dry the plant and sprinkle it with a fungicide (following the instructions on the label). Bring it inside once it has dried once more.
  • To eliminate the mold’s food source, be meticulous in getting rid of dead stems, blooms, and leaves as frequently as you can. Dust the cuts with cinnamon or fungicidal powder after trimming your plant or breaking a stem unintentionally to stop mold growth.

What occurs if vinegar is poured on plants?

Can baking soda damage the soil?

Because salt is poisonous to plants, baking soda contains sodium. So absolutely, a plant will die if enough sodium is poured on it.

Sodium is relatively soluble in water, though. As a result, when it rains, the sodium is diluted into the surrounding soil and may damage plants that aren’t weeds. Even if this does not take place, the sodium is still washed into lakes and rivers, where it causes harm.

It never ceases to amaze me that those who insist on using only natural, chemical-free goods have no trouble polluting the environment with everyday items.

Even if you wish to use sodium to eliminate weeds, table salt is more cost-effective and has more sodium per ounce. However, since sodium is bad for the environment, this is a bad idea.

The volume of soil you have

The oven, microwave, steam, or pressure cooker methods can be used if you just need to care for a little amount of soil. If you are merely treating soil for a few pots or seed trays, take into account these techniques. The solarization method must be used if there is a lot of soil to process, such as a large field, garden, or flowerbed.

How To Sterilize Soil In Oven

How To Sterilize Soil Without Baking

You can still sanitize your soil without baking it if you like. If you don’t want your oven or kitchen to smell like warm, earthy dirt, try this. The dirt can be steamed, microwaved, or exposed to the sun to sterilize it.

How To Sterilize Soil In The Sun

This technique employs solarization and covers your soil with several layers of plastic. The sun’s heat will increase the soil’s temperature, killing most germs, illnesses, weeds, and pests.

There are several methods that solarization can be used to sterilize an object. Your preference and money will determine which method you use, although they all lead to comparable results.

By putting plastic bags in direct sunlight to absorb the sun’s rays, you can use them to simulate a mini-greenhouse effect when sterilizing tiny amounts of soil. It’s crucial to set the bag flat so that the dirt develops a few-inch-thin layer.

Try spreading thin layers of soil over vast areas by scooping it between thick sheets of clear plastic. Thinner layers will function better because the main idea is to heat the soil through.

Simply cover entire borders or gardens with plastic and let the sun gradually heat them up to sterilize them. It is obvious that this procedure needs strong, uninterrupted sunshine for as long as feasible.

Clear or translucent plastic is the ideal material to use because it heats up the fastest and lets the sun’s direct energy reach the soils.

Although it heats up quickly, very thin plastic is brittle and prone to tearing. Therefore, I would advise using a good-quality, medium-thick sheet that can be folded, washed, and reused the next day.

Step By Step

  • If at all feasible, buy your plastic sheet in huge single panels and fix it with pegs or stones to keep it from blowing away or allowing cool wind to seep under the edges and cool the soil.
  • Any dirt clumps that can rip the plastic or slow down the process should be broken up, and any plant debris or large pebbles should be removed.
  • Place your first layer of plastic down if you’re using less soil or potting soil. Cover it with soil by spreading it out. A few inches should separate the soil from the edge.
  • The soil should be slightly moistened. Before beginning the solarization process in a garden or field, you must make sure that the top foot of soil is wet. Water it or begin after it has rained.
  • Make sure the plastic is flatly placed over the prepared soil. Rocks can be used to anchor the plastic in place. To seal in the heat buildup, I also advise burying the plastic’s edges in the ground. Make sure the plastic bags are well closed and the soil is spread out into a thin layer if you are placing the soil in them.
  • During the hottest time of the year, the process of solarization might take up to four to six weeks to finish in sizable areas. Under cooler or less optimal conditions, it could take longer.

Steam Sterilization Of Soil

Steam or boiling water can also be used to sterilize soil. If you have the necessary tools, this procedure is quick and efficient. You might choose to carry out this process using a pressure cooker. However, be cautious at all times and make sure you follow the pressure cooker’s instructions.

Pressure cooker method

You will need a pressure cooker, a rack, soil, aluminum foil, water, and heat-proof containers that are safe to use in your pressure cooker.

  • Place your pressure cooker in a secure area to start. The rack and a few cups of water are added.
  • Prepare containers for use in the cooker by filling them with soil. There is a maximum depth of 4 inches for the soil.

  • The dirt must be processed at 10 pounds of pressure for between 15 and 30 minutes in order to sterilize it.

  • The soil is prepared for usage once it has reached room temperature. Alternately, store it securely covered until you’re ready to utilize it.

Non-pressurized steam method

You’ll also need soil, water, aluminum foil, a sizable pot with a lid, a wire rack, and heat-safe containers. A big water bath would be useful. Basically, it goes through the same steps as making a steam pudding.

  • In your pot, add the rack and about an inch of water.
  • Soil should not extend deeper than four inches in your heat-resistant pots.
  • After placing them on the rack inside the pot, cover them with aluminum foil. The containers shouldn’t be stacked on top of one another.
  • Put the pot’s lid on, letting the steam out.
  • Bring the water to a boil by turning up the heat.
  • When the water reaches a rolling boil, let it simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Before using the soil, turn off the heat and give it time to cool completely.
