A delightful surprise awaits you at Trader Joe’s every time. The grocery shop always has something exciting to offer, whether it’s new food releases every month, gorgeous greeting cards, or beauty products. Its impressive array of plants is one among the things I am most looking forward to. Houseplants are a product that is sold at Trader Joe’s along with flowers. While it’s simple to overlook the leafy greens on a crowded shopping day, you can usually find them out front or along the store’s perimeter. You won’t ever forget that Trader Joe’s offers plants after you’ve seen them. Its variety is a veritable gold mine of greens, including peace lilies, prickly pear cacti, bunny mini plants, and fashionable coffee plants—all for an unbeatable price. Even though I never intend to purchase a plant, I frequently find myself doing so because, “For that price, how could I not?” (At least, that’s what I tell myself.)
There is typically at least one plant that will be calling your name, even though the variety varies seasonally and from store to store. A few of TJ’s greatest plants are shown below; feel free to pick one up on your next shopping trip!
Are there any plants in Costco?

We have some fantastic news for all plant parents, both current and future. One of our favorite plants, the fiddle leaf fig, looks to be available at Costco.
Around here, we’ve referred to a number of plants as the “new fiddle leaf” (Pothos, Monstera, Rubber trees), but we still adore the original It plant for its towering height and rich leaves.
Kaitlin, an employee at In Media, discovered these substantial fiddles at her nearby Costco in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Can you see the price? They are about six feet tall, as you can see.

Although the warehouse retailer does offer live plants for sale online, fiddle leaf figs are not now available.
If you decide to take advantage of this offer and are new to fiddle leaf figs, you should be aware that they prefer bright, indirect sunshine and only require watering when the top inch of soil is dry (which you can test with your finger). Another suggestion from plant parent Kaitlin:
When you reach home, make sure to give the leaves a good rinsing with water so they can better absorb the sun (mine are pretty dirty).

Which types of indoor plants does Trader Joe’s carry?
While we (of course) love all the frozen and dried goods Trader Joe’s has to offer, the plant and flower area is one of the nicest features of the cult-favorite supermarket. Their seasonal flowers are significantly less expensive than stems you’d get elsewhere, and with a little skill, you can design a completely unique arrangement for any occasion. But what else, besides florals? Those plants
With their wide range of reasonably priced plants, Trader Joe’s assortment is impossible to go wrong. They truly have something for everyone, from houseplants and herbs to seasonal flowers and container gardens. The pricing alone make it worthwhile to visit your local store to check it out, even though the selection may change based on the area and time of year (for example, succulents in the summer and miniature pine trees in the winter). If you’re looking for anything specific, it’s worthwhile to follow one or two Instagram accounts like this one or this one that provide updates on all the new plant stock (yes, they do exist).
When do fresh plants arrive at Trader Joe’s?
Freshness is a characteristic for Trader Joe’s plants. Freshest quality, greatest rates. These are the tenets of TJ’s plants and flowers, according to Maggie Meccia-Vogt, category manager for plants and flowers, who was interviewed on a 2019 episode of the TJ’s podcast titled The Plants & Flowers Edition. Get it in and get it out. I believe that this has been the secret to our success and the reason we have such a large following of devoted plant and flower customers: if something can’t sell in our stores within 24 hours, it doesn’t belong in our… businesses.
Having healthy plants that look fresh and enticing is no different from offering perfectly ripe produce or fresh-from-the-butcher meats. There is an additional layer for Trader Joe’s, and Meccia-Vogt believes that it has to do with how customers there view plants in general.
“We make every effort to keep the section as current as we can. I think the majority of our clients purchase items for personal use at home, which is completely different. She clarified in 2019 that it takes a much more distinctly European approach to flowers. If you go to Europe, and I was driving through residential areas in Germany from Holland when I saw that every window had flowers and plants in it. In the United States, individuals kind of think, do I want to spend the money on this for myself?”
Americans tend to think of flowers as being for special occasions or fantastic as gifts. Trader Joe’s shoppers don’t think like that: “I suppose I generally count at least one out of five supermarket carts had flowers and plants in it. That is something that no other retailer carries. Meccia-Vogt noted that not everyone is seen wheeling plants and flowers throughout the store in their carts.

My prolonged visit to a place in Central Texas confirmed that view. In order to make room for the upcoming round of fresh-from-the-grower types to set up shop and impress visitors, monsteras, succulents, and a plethora of roses popped out from most carts roaming the store.
But if you don’t receive the leafy plant you want on your subsequent visit, don’t worry: Every day of the week, fresh flower and plant deliveries are sent to Trader Joe’s, according to the podcast.

Where do the plants at Costco come from?
You might wonder how these big-box retailers can sell flowers for less than a dollar as you pass by the buckets of bouquets at Costco, Trader Joe’s, or Walmart.
The roses, carnations, and mums that will be cut, packed, and shipped overnight to Miami and end up in a vase on your dining room table are grown on almost 20,000 acres of land that receives both sun and rain.
A single farm, Flores El Trigal, located outside of Medellin in the Rionegro region, provides 120 million stems to American merchants every year, including Sam’s Club and Whole Foods Market. El Trigal, the largest flower producer in the area based on sales volume, with plant or propagation operations on about 175 acres of mountainous territory.
The average monthly compensation for workers is 689,455 COP ($240 at the current exchange rate), and they pay $10 per month for each child to attend a preschool close to the farm. The farm and the government cover the expense of childcare.
On January 20, some of the 52 preschoolers were learning their numbers while sitting on the floor in one classroom, while young children were clapping along to the teachers’ songs in another.
While their parents were putting the finishing touches on the impending, floral-themed Valentine’s Day, principal Cristina Hogar was keeping the students on task next door. The goal of flower growers is to increase American demand for flowers. You’re going to start hearing more and more about a new springtime holiday that celebrates women: The Women’s Day campaign.
While their parents work in Colombia’s flower fields, children are applauding, singing, and learning their numbers. Every morning, cargo jets carrying cut flowers land in Miami. And American Romeos on a budget may purchase a bouquet of roses for less money than it would cost to see “Fifty Shades of Grey” in a movie theater starting on Valentine’s Day.
Do they carry Plan B at Costco?
Plan B One-Step is available at Costco without a prescription. To get emergency contraception from their pharmacies, you don’t need to be a member. However, in some places, like Texas, obtaining emergency contraception for adolescents requires parental permission.
Go to the pharmacy counter and request Costco’s Plan B specifically. To verify that you are receiving the proper medication, the pharmacist will probably ask you a few questions. They might also tell you what to expect and how to use emergency contraception.
Why big-box stores are not a good place to buy plants?
The treatment the plants receive within the store is one of the biggest distinctions between big box stores and smaller specialty shops. In general, big-box stores tell their staff to water all the plants on a certain day without taking into account the requirements of individual plant. The smaller plant-specific shops, on the other hand, take the time to learn about each plant’s requirements, such as which plants were watered yesterday and don’t require as much watering. They’ll be able to spot problems with a plant and take appropriate action. For instance, big box retailers don’t mind if some of their stock goes bad, whereas smaller retailers may take the plant off the shelf and make an effort to rescue it.
