The researchers also evaluated what these findings would imply for two other sizes of offices: a small office (15 m3) and a medium office (100 m3). Five houseplants were found to reduce NO2 levels by about 20% in a small office with poor ventilation and significant levels of air pollution. Although this effect would be amplified by adding additional plants, it would be smaller in the bigger space—3.5%.
Although it is obvious how plants reduce NO2, the exact method by which they do so is yet unknown. Dr. Pfrang continued: “We don’t believe the plants are absorbing the gas in the same way they do for CO2 uptake, which involves microscopic pores in the leaves called stomata. Even throughout longer studies, there was no evidence that our plants released NO2 back into the atmosphere, indicating that there is likely a biological process going on that also involves the soil the plant is growing in, but we are not yet aware of what that process is.”
One of the study’s researchers, Dr. Tijana Blanusa, lead horticultural scientist at the RHS, said: “This supports RHS’s attempts to comprehend the scientific nuances underlying what we know to be a widespread enthusiasm. It is easier to plan and offer advice on planting combinations that not only look attractive but also perform vital environmental services when we are aware of the boundaries of what we can reasonably anticipate from plants.”
