What are the side effects of indoor plants?
If houseplants don’t get enough light and moisture, they could get bacterial infections on their leaves, mold, or fungus. Infections with bacteria, fungi, or mold can all affect the plant in different ways. Additionally, the diseases may cause pollutants and mold spores to discharge into the air you breathe.
Why are indoor plants bad?
Chemicals known as volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are gases or vapors that solids and liquids emit. However, it has been discovered that some indoor plants can release VOCs into the atmosphere in addition to producing oxygen and eliminating harmful VOCs.
Can indoor plants harm you?
You can grow hundreds of lovely houseplants, but some of them contain toxins that can have unpleasant or even lethal effects. Houseplants that are toxic can cause mouth and throat irritation, nausea, and skin rashes.
Which plant should not be in house?
Except for roses, cacti, bonsai, and other prickly plants need to be taken out of the house since they attract bad energy. They could also be bad for relationships with family members. Additionally, it is viewed as unlucky.
Are houseplants harmful to people?
You may cultivate hundreds of beautiful houseplants, but a handful of them contain compounds that might have unfavorable or even fatal effects. Houseplants that are poisonous can irritate the skin, upset the stomach, and burn the mouth and throat. The good news is that most plants would need to be ingested in vast quantities to actually cause any harm. Some plants are more toxic than others. Call your doctor or veterinarian, go to the emergency room, or dial the National Capital Poison Center at 800-222-1222 if you have any reason to believe that a kid or animal has become ill after eating or handling a houseplant.
Can some plants actually make you sick?
Every year, gardeners and members of the public ask us about apples that have areas of black powder and if they are safe to eat. When giving presentations at extension programs or events, we demonstrate some of the severe symptoms viruses can produce in pumpkins, zucchini, and other cucurbit fruit and are sometimes asked, “Could I get the virus that sickened that plant?”
Typically, the response is no. Disease-causing fungus, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes in plants are extremely dissimilar from those in humans and other animals. However, some plant infections may also be able to infect people, and those that can often are “opportunistic pathogens,” preying particularly on vulnerable populations. People with suppressed or weakened immune systems, those using specific medications, those with medical disorders, and others may all have weak immune systems (immunosuppressed).
It seems unlikely that eating or handling sick plants or their parts would give us the same disease that is ailing the plant. However, keep in mind that fruit from sick plants frequently has a flavor or texture that is very dissimilar from fruit that is healthy, so eating it may not be a good idea in any case. Avoiding sick fruit may be better unless it only has a superficial area (like a sooty blotch or flyspeck on an apple). Produce with symptoms shouldn’t be canned. There is a danger that the finished product’s acidity will alter, which could lead to spoiling or a higher risk of unfavorable circumstances that might favor the growth of germs that could be harmful to people.
Examples of microorganisms that have been implicated in harming people and plants include various bacteria and fungus as well as their byproducts (toxins, etc). Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria that can weakly damage plants like lettuce, is an illustration of this. This bacterium is known to infect the urinary tract, lungs, blood, and burns and other wounds in persons with weakened immune systems. Hospitalized patients with immune systems that are weakened due to severe burns, cancer, AIDS, or cystic fibrosis are more likely to experience it. P. aeruginosa is not a problem for the majority of people (or healthy plants).
Some fungi that dwell on dead plants can afflict people with illness. One such is the fungus Sporothrix schenckii, which typically thrives on dead rose thorns. This fungus can cause sporotrichosis, often known as “rose-disease,” picker’s if it enters a person’s skin and lymphatic system through a scrape or if they inhale its spores. Humans with this disease may experience issues with their lungs, eyes, bones, joints, and central nervous system. In addition, even if the pathogen itself does not infect people, some plant pathogenic fungus create chemicals that can be hazardous to humans. For instance, “mycotoxins” are produced by several fungi that cause corn ear rots, such as Fusarium (toxins produced by fungi). Fusarium produces fumonisins, zearalenone, and the appropriately called vomitoxin among its mycotoxins. Depending on the specific mycotoxin present and the extent of contamination, effects of mycotoxins on livestock fed contaminated grain can include development and reproductive issues, vomiting, general lethargy, and death. Aflatoxin-producing Aspergillus flavus is a frequent source of contamination in grains and peanuts. Aflatoxin exposure can result in vomiting, discomfort, seizures, and even death at very high doses. They can cause cancer at lower concentrations for a longer period of time (chronic exposure). The presence of mycotoxins is closely checked in grain intended for human consumption because they typically only affect grains and not common garden produce.
Pathogens that affect plants often do not specialize on infecting humans. Working with sick plants in your garden does not put you at risk for contracting a disease, but there is a possibility (depending on the infection) and care should be given. Although it might not be ideal, garden vegetables from a sick plant is typically safe to consume. Though some fungus and bacteria can produce hazardous substances, you should avoid eating moldy or rotten produce.
