Avocado As A House Plant: Is It Possible?

This might sound crazy or just weird but you can make a nice little houseplant from the pit of an Avocado.

It’s true! All you have to do is get an avocado from the grocery store and you can grow yourself a nice plant. I actually did this one time myself and it does work.

You will need your avocado, some toothpicks or matches, a jar and planting materials.

First what you want to do is cut the pit out of the avocado.

Next, take 3 toothpicks or matches and insert them into the pit.

Now you need the jar. Fill the jar up so that the water just touches the bottom of the avocado pit as its laying on the rim of the jar.

In about 2 to 8 weeks you will see white fleshy roots appear from the bottom of the pit. (this takes a long time, I almost gave up) Now after it has roots get a 6-8 inch pot and put 2 parts garden soil, 1 part coarse sand, 1 part peat moss, 1/4 part bone meal, and 1/2 part cow manure in the pot.

Now plant the pit in the soil mix. Only put the pit in the soil half way, so that half is still sticking out of the soil.

Keep it in a warm place that gets good light. Water when its dry to the touch. One thing with these plants is that It is really easy to over water them. It is just as big of a problem as under watering them.

When the plant is about 7 to 8 inches tall cut it halfway. This will encourage branching.

This is a fun project for kids as well as grownups because its fun for kids to see it start from almost nothing and become something that can be displayed. It can also be educational, as it will teach them about propagation.

Enjoy your new unique houseplant!
