However, there isn’t much solid scientific evidence to support the idea that adding a few plants to your house or office will help to filter the air there.
The majority of research projects to date, including the NASA study, placed indoor plants in restricted spaces to gauge their ability to purify the air. Stanley Kays, an emeritus professor of horticulture at the University of Georgia, claims that those studies aren’t really relevant to what takes place in a home.
A 2009 study on the purifying properties of 28 various indoor plants was co-authored by Kays. While many of those plants were capable of purging the air of contaminants, the author claims that transitioning from an enclosed container to an open atmosphere drastically alters the dynamics.

In addition to being aesthetically pleasant and adding a splash of color to otherwise dull homes or offices, houseplants can help to reduce indoor air pollution because to their capacity to absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These substances are gases or vapors released by solids and liquids that may be harmful to people’s short- and long-term health. Each plant’s samples were put in glass jars with outlet ports connected to traps for measuring volatile emissions and intake ports connected to charcoal filters to supply cleansed air. To ensure that there were no pollutants, the outcomes were compared to empty containers. The Peace Lily contained a total of 23, the Areca Palm 16, the Weeping Fig 13, and the Snake Plant 12 volatile chemicals. Some VOCs are substances found in pesticides used on a variety of species during the production stage.
And it turns out that other factors other than the plants themselves are also contributing to the emission of VOCs. Along with the plastic pots the plants were housed in, which were the source of 11 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), living microorganisms in the soil were also to blame for the volatiles’ release into the atmosphere. Several of these VOCs are known to have harmful effects on humans.
The study also discovered that all species’ VOC emission rates were higher during the day than at night, and that this was true for all classes of emissions as well. This was anticipated because a number of factors, including the presence of light, alter synthesis and affect the rate of release.
The study came to the conclusion that while some VOCs are known to be removed by decorative plants, they also release a variety of VOCs, some of which are known to be toxic to people and animals. The researchers did add, however, that because the persistence of these substances hasn’t been sufficiently investigated, it is unknown how they would affect people.
The plant in the corner doesn’t seem to be as appealing anymore, does it? But take this into account before you throw any plants away. You should be grateful that plants at least absorb some VOCs in addition to producing them if the plastic pots were revealed to be the source of 11 VOCs. The amount of plastic that likely surrounds you at this now cannot be stated to be the same. Perhaps water that plant instead.

Can too many indoor plants be unhealthy?
By removing mold from your indoor plants’ leaves, you can lessen your exposure to it. On living plants, mold is readily removed with a damp cloth. Never use a dry paper towel for this; doing so will cause the air to become more contaminated with mold spores.

HOUSEPLANTS, AVOIDING MOLD EXPOSURE:
Start with clean ground. If you buy a new plant, repot it in sterile soil because the soil may have been moldy when you brought it home from the store. Repot the plant after carefully removing all of the soil from its root ball.
Only water your houseplants when the soil is dry. A plant is typically exposed to mold when it is kept consistently damp. When you either overwater your houseplants or water on a schedule rather than by touch, this occurs. Before watering a houseplant, make sure the soil at the top is dry.
Increase the light. Making sure that indoor plants receive plenty of sunlight and, more importantly, that the sunlight falls on the soil is a terrific strategy to reduce moisture since mold adores the dark.
Insert a fan. As was said above, adding a fan will lessen your exposure to mold since excellent air circulation around the plant will prevent mold growth in the soil. This can be helped with a basic oscillating fan that is set to low.
Organize your indoor plants. Mold exposure is made worse by dead leaves and other organic debris. Regularly clip any dead stems and leaves.

Why not sleep in a room that has plants?
You often hear people say that houseplants shouldn’t be kept in bedrooms because they pose safety risks. This is based on the fact that while you’re sleeping, most plants will emit carbon dioxide and collect oxygen from the air.
Many houseplants do this, and it is absolutely true. However, in practice, there is little Oxygen taken and Carbon Dioxide exhaled (figures will be given and explained a little later). This demonstrates that having plants in your bedroom is completely safe.
Actually, I’m going to go a step further and argue that having plants in your bedroom is generally really advantageous, and I’ll be giving you the reasons why.
The Mother-in-Tongue Law’s or Snake Plant is the ideal bedside table plant. One of the greatest bedroom plants that can tolerate both direct sunshine and indirect light and doesn’t require much care.
What are the signs that I have too many plants?
I’ve seen that the cost of having houseplants as a hobby rises quickly.
I now have dozens of diverse plants instead of just a few pathetic cacti. Additionally, I picked up a bunch of new vocabulary, including “variegated,” “sphagnum,” and “Sansevieria.”
By slicing a piece off one of your original specimens and placing it in a jar of water, you can contribute to a small number of collections. And have both components endure in any case.
Simply said, if you have more indoor plants than you can maintain, you have too many.
It’s certainly time to downsize once maintaining your collection starts to feel more like a chore than a pleasure.
