It wouldn’t be unreasonable to suppose that plants mitigate any environmental harm by purifying the air as they absorb CO2 and emit oxygen.
Plants can remove “substantial volumes” of CO2 from a room, according to PhD research by environmental consultant Curtis Gubb, but the quantity depends on the type of plant, how many there are, how light the room is, and how much water is in the soil.

The four plants they selected were the Areca Palm (Areca palma L.), Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina L.), Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata Prain), and Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii Regel) (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens Wendl.).
Each plant’s samples were put in glass jars with outlet ports connected to traps for measuring volatile emissions and intake ports connected to charcoal filters to supply cleansed air. To ensure that there were no pollutants, the outcomes were compared to empty containers. The Peace Lily contained a total of 23, the Areca Palm 16, the Weeping Fig 13, and the Snake Plant 12 volatile chemicals. Some VOCs are substances found in pesticides used on a variety of species during the production stage.
And it turns out that other factors other than the plants themselves are also contributing to the emission of VOCs. Along with the plastic pots the plants were housed in, which were the source of 11 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), living microorganisms in the soil were also to blame for the volatiles’ release into the atmosphere. Several of these VOCs are known to have harmful effects on humans.
The study also discovered that all species’ VOC emission rates were higher during the day than at night, and that this was true for all classes of emissions as well. This was anticipated because a number of factors, including the presence of light, alter synthesis and affect the rate of release.
The study came to the conclusion that while some VOCs are known to be removed by decorative plants, they also release a variety of VOCs, some of which are known to be toxic to people and animals. The researchers did add, however, that because the persistence of these substances hasn’t been sufficiently investigated, it is unknown how they would affect people.
The plant in the corner doesn’t seem to be as appealing anymore, does it? But take this into account before you throw any plants away. You should be grateful that plants at least absorb some VOCs in addition to producing them if the plastic pots were revealed to be the source of 11 VOCs. The amount of plastic that likely surrounds you at this now cannot be stated to be the same. Perhaps water that plant instead.

In South African environments, where invasive alien plants are a major concern, how much is known about these processes? We read every South African paper we could find on the effects of alien plants on animals in order to identify the solution, and we then reported our findings in a recent study. We concentrated on ectothermic, or “cold blooded,” animals, such as reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. For them to live, grow, and reproduce, the environment must exchange heat with it. These animals often travel shorter distances than mammals or birds, which makes them more susceptible to invasions by non-native plants.

Are plants a better air cleanser than filters?
We regret having to inform you, but no. In any actually achievable number of houseplants, and most definitely not in an average number of plants way. Sadly, it is largely untrue that plants can successfully purify indoor air.
Of course, plants take in carbon dioxide, undergo photosynthesis, and release oxygen back into the atmosphere. The underlying hypothesis was that plants could be able to absorb other air pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds, in addition to carbon dioxide (VOCs). This is accurate in theory. However, houseplants don’t qualify as air purifiers because of how slowly they can remove VOCs from the air.
